A world consumed by war . . .
An ancient evil resurrected . . .
A millennia old bargain comes due . . .

When two blades clash, the third will fall, and the fate of all will be jeopardized. To save Lozaria, the failures of the past must be atoned for by a new generation of heroes. The time has come for mortals to cast off sight and, in doing so, truly come to see . . .

Victory is never absolute

Seven centuries ago, the forces of order won the Illyriite War on the plains of Har'muth. Darmatus and Rabban Aurelian slew their elder brother, Sarcon, the despotic architect of the conflict, then sacrificed themselves to banish the cataclysmic vortex opened with his dying breath. The first advent of the Oblivion Well was thwarted. Even without their vanished gods, the seven races of Lozaria proved themselves capable of safeguarding their world.

Or so the story goes.

The year is now 697 A.B.H. (After the Battle of Har'muth). Though war itself remains much the same, the weapons with which it is waged have evolved. Airships bearing powerful cannons ply the skies, reducing the influence of mages and their spells. Long range communication has brought far flung regions of Lozaria closer than ever before. At the center of this technological revolution are the three Terran states of Darmatia, Rabban, and Sarconia, who have fought a near ceaseless campaign of 700 years in an attempt to best each other. The roots of their enmity lie buried beneath the wasteland of Har'muth, a place all three nations consider best forgotten.

However, an ancient power sealed within Har'muth has not forgotten them, and the descendants of those who fought on that field must now take a stand to rectify the mistakes of the past.

Review

"The combination of magic, fantasy, and technology was executed wonderfully." - Petrik Leo, Novel Notions

"History and flashback sequences seamlessly combine with action, magic, and sci-fi battle scenes, all of it very cinematic . . . Don't even get me started on that mix of magic and technology, fantasy and sci-fi - absolutely brilliant." - Magic Book Corner

"Russell has developed a fascinating literary realm in Divinity’s Twilight that weaves together legend, magic, and seemingly unending conflict into a fast paced adventure. In a read that proves to be action packed from cover to cover, we find vivid characters vying for positions of power as their personalities clash even during the most peaceful of times. When these young soldiers are then thrust into life or death situations we watch as their unique quirks either exacerbate the most talented into inaction or inspire the confidence lacking squib to flourish.

Divinity’s Twilight is a delightfully ambitious epic fantasy that sprints right out of the gate and maintains an unrelenting pace throughout. The reader will find themselves mindlessly flipping pages as the stakes grow ever steeper with each subsequent chapter." - The Critiquing Chemist

"Newcomer Russell's new high fantasy series launch is well written with a definite steampunk vibe and sword-and-sorcery appeal. Readers of alternate-world fantasy will find this a satisfying read and a good start for a new author who's soon to have a loyal following." - Library Journal Review by Russell Miller

“Fans of epic fantasy who look for world-building tales will find Divinity's Twilight: Rebirth a compelling read that begins midway in an already-extensive history, but carries its story with a powerful surge of description, action, and intrigue.” - Midwest Book Review

"From how pacifists become soldiers to cycles of violence sparked by unusual circumstances, Divinity's Twilight: Rebirth is a true epic. Its complex world and its influences will leave readers intrigued and engaged in mysteries and miracles that leave the door open for further adventures. "Divinity’s Twilight: Rebirth by Christopher Russell is the first book in what promises to be a breathtaking epic fantasy series... Top tier world-building coupled with well-crafted history and lore made Rebirth an enthralling read, with events and characters clicking into place at a breakneck pace... Classic fantasy archetypes are thrown to the wind while tropes are shattered and fused anew to create characters that reek of familiarity but brim with mystery, intrigue, and uncertainty." -Reader's Favorite

I'm Christopher Russell, a weaver of words and the wondrous worlds that spring from them. I might also be a fan of alliteration.

My gripping epic fantasy series, Divinity's Twilight, follows a band of military cadets torn from their peaceful lives when a tragic failure by their ancestors, a mistake seven centuries old, dredges itself from an all too shallow grave. Book one, Divinity's Twilight: Rebirth, is currently available from all major retailers. Book two is set to release in February or March of 2022.

Sample chapters from the novel and assorted short stories are available at christopherrussellauthor.com/books-1--and check out the rest of my site for setting details, character previews, new projects, and more.

Long prologue, but becomes an excellent read after!
The prologue was long and sluggish for me, I had trouble getting into it, but oh my, once the main story kicked in wow, it was great! It had a great combination of military, technology and magic with great character building. I loved it once past the prologue! Well worth sticking it out for the body of the story and the background information does come into play once the story really gets going.

This isn’t usually the type of fantasy novel I pick up to read but Boy Am I Glad I Did! This was a fantastic book! I really enjoyed everything about it. His characters were extremely well written, his world building was fantastic and the overall story was captivating and made me want to know more. (And now I have to wait for the sequel…so many sequels to be waiting for!)

I think that the major theme I got from this book was Trust. Trusting your squad mates, trusting your family, your friends, and even trusting yourself. We all have our own hang ups when it comes to trust, as do, the characters in this book. Who can they trust?

The story basically involves two, 4 person, squads of cadets at the Darmatian Military Academy. Each cadet has their own baggage, their own strengths, and their own magical/fighting abilities (or lack there of). And during the final physical test before their graduation something terrible happens. The Sarconian Empire attacks the Aldona Fortress and the cadets are flung head first into a mega war, filled with airships, battleships, and ancient magic. There is an ancient evil mage that can steel bodies, crazy magical incantations, so much political intrigue, and a secret Princess.

Will the cadets survive to save their nation? Can they trust each other? Can they trust themselves? You are definitely going to have to read this book to find out!

I was torn on my favorite character. Each main character was my favorite, throughout the book, at some point. But by the end I had finally come to the conclusion that Matteo was my favorite. Even though he had some cowardly moments, he really prevailed in the end. Also, I really related to the idea that sometimes it is hard to make a decision when both choices mean a lot to you and you don’t know how to choose. However, I also really really enjoyed some the minor side characters. For example, I really appreciated Elaine and everything she brought to one of the overall themes of the story. I am really big into the idea that you need to fight hate with Kindness. So I really appreciated her.

The only thing I wish there was more of was romance…although…if I was reading the signals right, there will be more in the sequel.

All in all, this is a fantastic book! I believe any sci-fi or futuristic fantasy fan would absolutely devour this novel, but there are so many great things within the pages that even Sci-fi avoiders like me, will enjoy and the themes will resonate with.

Three brothers and three separate visions of peace collide on a battlefield. Two brothers sacrifice everything, including themselves to eliminate their oldest brother, and they die believing it was enough to stop his monstrous vision of remaking the world. The world that emerges ages after from that bloodbath is one that convinces itself that a peace of sorts has been achieved. Each of the three realms becomes a reflection, a living testament, of each brothers’ vision of how peace should be created. The illusion is shattered though when the eldest brother’s monstrous vision burst forth again, unable to be buried for any longer. Now their people are at a crossroads, and each person must decide if the vision is worth the fight. Is the vision achieved only through knowledge, or the engineering marvels man can build, or by gaining boundless, all-consuming power? Even more disturbing is peace only achieved by crushing the other dreams in rivers of blood, as one voice so mercilessly proclaims? We watch in horror as the answer seemingly becomes yes as this hunger for power is used to justify mass murder in the name of the vision, one’s own conscience is shut down in the name of loyalty to such wicked leadership, and human life becomes mere fuel to feed a leader’s own sick rise to power. Can anyone possibly stand against such unleashed evil? Yes, there is still found a remnant. Sure, some of their motives aren’t the purest either. Their painful past has left them broken and jaded, but few would emerge otherwise once we hear their stories. So, they fight back the only way they know, out of revenge, vowing never to be hurt again and make their enemy suffer in the same way they have. Not all roads are such, thankfully. We watch others see beyond the falsehoods planted inside their hearts and realize their truth worth when it matters most. One person shines brightest in that moment and gives everything so others could continue to carry on the fight, a testament of another battle long past. For others it empowers them to move past their doubts and fears to places of strength to finally understand their vision is worth fighting for. Because the vision isn’t an image in the clouds. It’s made of flesh and blood, heart and spirit, and friends and family. One of Christopher’s own characters says it best, “This is what the Creator intended for us: to save ourselves from destruction by proving we’re capable of more than violence and killing. He had faith that we would rise above our faults and find the kindness in our hearts to support one another in the face of every adversary. Doesn’t that message fill you with hope and awe?” I believe it does. Certainly, a vision that inspires us to true greatness, a vision worth fighting for, even if it cost our last breath on the battlefield of life.

Wow hats off the Christopher Russell for his amazing debut, this book is so inntense it will have sitting on the edge of seat, the scope of the story is so epic, his description and the detail he puts into the military, the airships and the magic is so immense, the characters are brilliant and then there's the bad ones you just want to punch in the face, a brilliantly military sci-fi feel to it with lots and lots magic, with Christopher's writing you can't help fall in love some of the characters, my favourites were Matteo and Valle, you can't help but cheer for them as there is so many villains, a fast paced intriguing read that you will love, The story starts off with an explosive beginning, you are dropped straight into a battle of epic proportions, when three brothers have three separate visions for peace, they meet on the battlefield, two of them must sacrifice everything, including themselves to take out their oldest brother, when they die trying and believing it was enough to stop his evil vision of remaking the world, the world that emerges years after that bloodbath is one that convinces itself that a peace of sorts has been achieved or has it, each of the three realms becomes a mirror image, a living testament, of each brother's vision of how peace should have been created, the illusion is shattered when the eldest brother's evil vision breaks forth again, unable to be hidden any longer, now their people are at a junction and they must decide if the vision is worth the fight or die, absolutley awesomely good, the worldbuilding, the plot and setting are fantastic, can't wait for book two, damn, I very highly recommend...😁

In an awesome mash-up of sci-fi and fantasy, Russell takes us on an exciting, steampunkish journey through time and space.

The characters are diverse and nuanced, and the plot is complex without being complicated. Loaded with thrilling twists and turns, this story often had me on the edge of my seat.

    An excellent read.

Reviewed in Canada on June 8, 2020
This book intrigued me for it’s incredible imaginative content. I was overwhelmed by how descriptive and magical it was, but there was an element of science weaved into it. After reading Author Russell’s bio, discovering he is a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer I really appreciated the depth of this author’s writing.

I have read some fantasy books in my youth such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, this body of work had my heart pounding from the first chapter. From Lozaria a world of tumultuous heritage to Har’muth a barren land, the story line was excellent, the plot twisting and turning and the ending is not what I expected.

This book is so good I look forward to Author Russell’s future work.

4.0 out of 5 stars A sprawling science-fantasy epic with incredible ideas and detailed world-building.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 14, 2024
To say this novel starts with a bang is an understatement. You’re launched into the midst of a pivotal historic war that beautifully captures the world, the magic system and the foundational lore for the overarching story. The novella-length prologue could quite easily be released as a standalone piece, and would — I’m fairly certain — be critically acclaimed. I found no fault with it’s pacing, the action, the world that Russell constructed, and the larger than life characters that form the chess pieces in the final act of the world’s historical war.

If I was to use this book to evaluate the author’s strengths, I would put the world-building up top, with its magic system, political situation, and technology. There’s an establishment of a baseline level of societal advancement via magic early-on with the copious use of air travel and firearms, but beneath this are lots of hints of a precursor magic system underpinning it (Old Magic), which adds a sense of history to the world that many other authors have sometimes failed to consider. The races of people he’s created have recognisable traits, strengths and weaknesses, each of which we get to experience as part of the incredible prologue battle — traits which are then explored in more detail throughout the story.

Additionally, Russell is a master at constructing intense and catastrophic military engagements, with well-paced battles and situations where the reader almost feels the sheer terror that the inexperienced cadet characters are feeling whilst enduring these sometimes overwhelming assaults. When the characters exit an engagement by only a hair’s breadth of success, I believed it, and felt each of the character’s internal tensions.

All in all, Divinity’s Twilight: Rebirth presents a satisfying narrative, with some incredible set-pieces backed by a world that has a laudable depth… I just found myself wishing that a key protagonist wasn’t a part of the book, or at the very least, was relegated to a supporting role.
