“Sci-fi and mystery fans will love this book.” --Writer's Digest
CFBI agent Jasmine McLellan leads a psychically gifted team in the hunt for a serial arsonist--a murderer who has already taken the lives of three people.
Jasi and her team members--Psychometric Empath and profiler Ben Roberts and Victim Empath Natassia Prushenko--are joined by Brandon Walsh, the handsome but skeptical Chief of Arson Investigations. In a manhunt that takes them from Vancouver to Kelowna, Penticton and Victoria, they are led down a twisting path of sinister secrets.
Sifting through ashes and clues, Jasi realizes that there is more to the third victim than meets the eye. Perhaps not all the victims were that innocent. The hunt intensifies when she learns that someone they know is next on the arsonist's list.
Unleashing her gift as a Pyro-Psychic, Jasi is compelled toward smoldering ashes and enters the killer's mind--a mind bent on destruction and revenge. And in the heat of early summer, Jasi discovers that a murderer lies in wait...much closer than she ever imagined.

From the Author
From the Inside Flap
With one hand raised to protect her bloodied face, she scrambled along the floor of the shed, searching for escape, clawing at the rough cedar planks below her.
"Please, let me go! I've done nothing!"
Crouching down with a piece of yellow rope grasped firmly between my hands, I stared at her. She reminded me of a deer, caught in the headlights of an oncoming car.
Removing the hood from my head, I smiled.
Her eyes widened with recognition and terror.
I carefully tied her feet together and pushed her to a sitting position. Then I wrapped the stiff rope around her neck. Yanking her toward the wooden workbench, I heard her gasping for air, her short legs jerking spasmodically beneath her.
I leaned down and asked her one important question.
With a glimmer of hope in her terrified eyes, she whispered the answer in a small voice.
"No man. No man wash¯"
"Nana?" a child's voice called from outside the utility shed.
I held my breath and prayed that the child would go away, but when the door opened and a small face peered inside, I knew that I had no other choice.
Grabbing the little girl's arm, I hauled her into the shed.
"You should have stayed inside the house. Now look what you're making me do, you naughty girl."
The child whimpered softly while I tied her tightly to the semi-conscious woman. And then I left them, trussed up like animals, while I made the final preparations.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2008I am a paranormal nut.
Divine Intervention introduces us to the world of paranormal investigators who are part of the CFBI. Matthew Divine has gathered the best of the best - an psychometric empath who can 'read' you when he touches you - Ben, Natassia, a Russian victim empath who can literally enter the dead to read their last moments, and our heroine, Jasi McClellan, who is a pyro-psychic - she can go into the ruins of a fire and be able to know what happened inside.
Together the team tries to find a serial arsonist, who plays a game of cat and mouse with them and all law enforcement.
A noted doctor was tortured and burned in his home, and his father is the Premier of Canada. This is a high profile investigation!
A handsome member of the investigative team, Brandon Walsh, joins the group and finds he and Jasi have great attraction and chemistry. The problem is Jasi resists any involvement because it throws her powers out of whack!
With a great cast of characters, suspects, and action, Ms. Tardif has written the first of I hope many Divine adventures.
I am a fan of the Kay Hooper books where the investigators all have psychic powers, but think our Canadian counterpart has a better chemistry than those books. Also Ms. Tardif has been called the Canadian J.D. Robb - a great compliment!
Ms. Tardif has also written the much acclaimed Whale Song. I look forward to more from her as she's gotten me hooked on the PSI Team - Psychic Skills Investigators -
Great read!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2012ABOUT THE BOOK:
Jasi is awakened by an early call requesting her to come in from her long needed vacation and join her team on an arson investigation that has just proven to be part of what appears to be a serial crime. Her team, using their psychic abilities, investigates two arsons months and miles apart. Beginning with the fiery death of a doctor that eventually links back to the woman and child who were killed in the first fire, Jasi and her team discover secrets that not only the doctor had but also secrets that so many around him have. The team learns how limiting their abilities are and how much old fashion police work must be done to catch the arsonist.
When Jasi comes upon the scene where the doctor was found she meets Brandon Walsh who she thinks is just another interfering Arson Investigator. Most AI's don't understand the gifts that Jasi and her team bring to the investigations and normally, since her team is from a federal level agency, she doesn't have to worry about the local Arson Investigators. Imagine her surprise and dismay when she finds she must work with Walsh on this entire investigation. It doesn't help that she is attracted to him and he to her.
MY TAKE:
I really enjoyed the very first part of the book and got into the characters immediately. I was a bit hesitant when the team reached the first arson scene because the author created a feeling that both women on the team felt all men were sexual predators or at least pigs. When Jasi met Walsh, I got the distinct feeling this book would turn into a heart throb Romance. It does not. Not that there isn't sexual tension, there is. But the story carries the day similar to, say, the television show Castle.
The way the author weaved clues to the real arsonist's identity was like a tangled ball of yarn. Just when you think you have finally got the story straight and know how the players fit together, you come to a knot of conflict, proving you haven't figured out the arson story completely. Each clue leads you to another strand to follow but eventually, after continually plucking and picking at each thread, you find they all are part of one complete string pointing directly to the killer. What can be more fun than running down clues, trying to solve the crime before our heros do? While I was able to figure out the killer sooner than I think the author intended, the story was still quite enjoyable. Taking the book at several readings might have contributed to my digesting the clues. If you read the book straight through, you may be surprised by the killer.
I especially enjoyed watching how the psychic abilities aided the investigation but didn't solve the crime. No, good old fashion detective work solved the crime but with the clues the psychic abilities uncovered. In fact, sometimes the psychic clues lead to more questions than answers.
RECOMMENDATION:
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in detective, thriller books, especially one with a psychic twist.
I rate books against other books of the same genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2012I found this book for free some days ago, and decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did, because this is a beautifully written, thrillingly told story by an author who obviously is on top of her game, and delights in her craft.
The plot starts out complicated and gets more so, intertwining several back stories, character development, investigative techniques that, though in the near future are entirely believable, and, yes, the paranormal. Reading about the CFBI was fascinating, used as I am to reading about the law enforcement agencies of my own country. There do seem be be minor differences, but as they do the same jobs, they are, as they must be, very similar. this is, however, a quintessentially Canadian novel, and the beauty of the landscapes, the attitudes of the characters, and the speech patterns all contribute to this, although no one in the book said "eh" ...not even once, though I suspect that is a speech pattern of other regions. However, as important as setting is, it is background scenery, against which the story unfolds, and the setting never intrudes, though it does charm. The story is sometimes poignant, sometimes scary, sometimes even gory ...and always marvelously exciting. Even through the fast and furious action, though, we see the characters unfold, and come to care about the main ones, especially the team of very special investigators, who are all very good at what they do, and very human, too.
Inclusion of the paranormal can ruin what would otherwise be a good book if not done well, but that isn't a problem here, mostly because the special abilities of each team member are treated in the same way any special skill would be treated. they are important, of course, but they aren't so overwhelmingly so that they replace logic, investigative procedure, or the ability to find and follow leads from other sources. If I have a quibble with this book, and it's a small one, I find the main character's angst about relationships a little too much, and possibly a bit heavy handed. On the other hand, I also expect her to work through it in subsequent books, so I'll reserve judgment on that until I've read the next book in the series, which I definitely will. I anticipate the next book with pleasure and curiosity.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is taut, cohesive, yet personal. I loved it!
When Cheryl Kaye Tardif writes a book you know it will grip you right from the beginning and take you on an intense and fascinating ride. This book is no exception, but readers should keep in mind this book was written in 2004 as a futuristic techno-psi-thriller and has now almost caught up with itself. I loved this book, even though it may be a little dated futuristically. In fact, that was part of its allure for me, it takes place in British Columbia and references some of the past I know. I feel connected to this story. It's curious to see what might have been, technically speaking, in 2012 and where we actually are (to the best of our limited knowledge) in 2011. As the average reader knows, when it comes to technology and psychic resources for certain areas of our lives, we are definitely left out of the loop be it governmental, military, or even local policing.
Regardless, this is fun, intense, serious, futuristic fiction done up with great characterizations, full of futuristic tools. I say tools because these are the good guys, no bombs here. They are police, firemen, and secret law enforcement agents under the recently formed CFBI, a Canadian counterpart to the FBI. In "Divine Intervention" this group has just taken charge of two cases from different parts of British Columbia after evidence in both cases points to a serial arsonist murderer. What is different in this group is the covert Psi factor.
The group we follow is part of the PSI division, Psychic Skills Investigators, secreted in an underground complex under the direction of Matthew Divine. Very specialized in different areas, this close-knit group is comprised of Agent Jasmine McLellan, leader, profiler Ben Roberts, and Natassia Prushenko. Jasmine, Jasi to her friends, is a Pyro-Psychic who "reads" fires, her psychic ability to see through a killer's eyes and mind is drawn out by the smell of fires. Ben is a Psychometric Empath, able to read thoughts and emotions by touch. Natassia is a Victim Empath, touching a cadaver, she "relives" the victim's last sights and thoughts. Is the high profile but insufferable Premier of B.C. a suspect or a victim? What is the real reason his father was murdered? Who would have any reason to kill a foster mother and 4 year old child? How do these all fit together? These are the questions they must find answers to, and there is every reason to believe the murderer will claim another victim very quickly. There is one clue only when the team starts its investigation.
This book is exceptionally well-written, interesting in its handling of unusual circumstances, and equally unusual characters. It is taut, cohesive, yet personal. I enjoyed the thoughts going through Jasi's mind when she wasn't working, and "hearing" her read seems like a jolt of reality, this girl is definitely seeing through the killer's eyes and speaking his/her thoughts and words. The author has a way of creating reality from paranormal or psychic abilities and puts the words in her characters' mouths. I was completely glued to the book. I heartily recommend Cheryl Kaye's books, no matter the subject. I have the feeling she could write about any subject and makes us want more.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Liked This Much More Than Her Children of the Fog
I liked this way more than Children of the Fog and there were way fewer mistakes too. That alone makes it worth an extra star alone !!
I really liked the story as well. I'm not a big sci-fi fan but it's not TOO much like that. Just up on technology, really. Now't wrong with that. Gave it an extra dimension along with the investagators' special abilities. Now, they were very intriguing. I liked the idea of a mood wall as well.
I have the second in the series downloaded too. There don't seem to be anymore than the two so I'm wondering if she packed it in which would be a shame.
I laughed and cried at the author's dedication and disclaimer at the very start of the book for different reasons. They were well done.
There were some apostrophe mistakes (especially a repetitive one-Foreman's and not Foremans') and annoyingly the usual pouring used instead of poring. A great annoyance of mine as it's so rarely used properly. A surprise missed apostrophe was in cant. I've never seen that done before and discernible is not spelt discernable.
The book ended 10% before the end in order to advertise the next in the series. This seems to be something done quite a lot in e-books and there's no need because if a book is good the reader isn't daft and knows how to find more by the same person !! Sure, make a note, but I don't need to read chapters of the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars New and Exciting!
Its about time someone went ahead and discovered a new theme for detective novels. This glimpse into a possible futuristic scenario is great. Canadian literature and television seems to be making strides in directions hitherto untouched by others. This book is certainly no exception. Its psychometry enabled team, combined with some good old fashioned detective work present a great man-hunt across the wondrful Northern American Continent. Its imagery is riveting, the plot excellent and the thrill continued to boiling point. A great new page-turning read. Not to be missed.Divine Intervention

3.0 out of 5 stars It is much like a written comic strip
Very fictitious, nothing resembles reality. It is much like a written comic strip. It is action packed, with very easy to follow characters thus easy to read and relaxing. If BC were to become the 51st state this might be what it would be like.
It is fun to read, relaxing and does not require much concentration.
