Do Unto Others: An Evan Buckley Crime Thriller (Evan Buckley Thrillers Book 20) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 316 ratings

Five years ago, a light aircraft owned by Mexican drug baron and people trafficker Esteban Aguilar went down in the middle of the Louisiana swamps. The pilot and another man were found dead inside, both shot to death. The prisoner who’d been handcuffed in the back was nowhere to be found. Nor was a couple of million in dirty cash or something else a lot more valuable in the wrong hands.

Suddenly it’s payback time for PI Evan Buckley. He owes crime boss Stan Fraser a favor – and Stan doesn't like to be told, no. Find his son Arlo who just went missing trying to get to the bottom of the unsolved cold case down in Louisiana - or face the consequences.

From a corrupt politician whose career is on the line to the psychopathic brother of the prisoner who escaped to a retired cop nursing his dreams of bloody revenge, everybody’s got an agenda. There's only one thing they can all agree on - Evan has to be stopped before he uncovers the truth.

With his every move dogged by the enigmatic minder Stan's saddled him with, Evan knows that if he can't find Arlo and bring him home in one piece, he might as well not come home at all.

Evan has to repay a favor to Stan Frasier, find his son Arlo. He was able to find out where Arlo was, but he had to take backup. He knew he had no choice, but that doesn't mean he has to "live" with him.
Evan talks to a lot of people, finds holes in the 5 year old police report about a plant crash. He also finds out more than what he thought was going on. He gets a couple of messages to back off or else.
Arlo finally calls Evan, and Arlo talks to his father, Stan, tells him he is alive, but never coming back. Evan's job is finished but... Evan and Arlo devise a plan to satisfy both of themselves and trap killers.
Do Unto others, by James Harper, is one of the best, and I've read all 20 books. To everyone I say, read and enjoy.

This is not just another great Evan Buckley mystery; it's the best one so far- and, yes, I've read them all. The way Harper ties everything up so neatly in the end is masterful. This guy is just a flat-out great author. Some Hollywood producer could get rich by making Harper's books into movies or a TV series. Are you listening Amazon?

Enjoyed it, classic Buckley story. Having read all 20 books now I'm quite impressed of how the quality of the stories is kept at a high level. This one is recommended, as is the series from the beginning.

Ever since I first stumbled upon Harper's hapless PI, I have been a fan. His Evan Buckley series never fails to disappoint. I also love the idea that he dedicated this book to his cat, whether that's the actual Leonard to whom the book was dedicated or not. Two thumbs up from me.

Currently the last of this series, I can only hope there are more on the way. Evan spends most of his time in this one in Louisiana investigating the death - murder - of a couple of men on a small plane owned by a Mexican dope-gunrunner-people-trafficking king that crashed in the Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge several years ago. One of the dead men obviously wasn't on the plane when it landed in the trees at all, and one passenger of the plane, on impact handcuffed to the seat, is missing. The pilot and a local paramedic who had been hiking in the area and obviously saw the plane come down and attempted to assist were both shot multiple times. Evan's connection goes back to local badman Fraser, a man Evan owes a fairly big favor from the past. Basically guilted into finding the location of Fraser's son Arlo, a boy who disappeared several years ago with a girl connected to the murder of other children that Evan had investigated in the past. If he's still alive, Arlo would be in his mid-20's now, and has not been heard from since he was 17 or 18, even by the girl he ran away with when they were 15 shortly after Arlo's mother died of cancer. Maybe.

A very convoluted tale, told very very well. Several crucial bits of evidence are missing from the local small-town cop shop involved in investigating the plane crash, and the newly hired kid-reporter of the local paper, Arlo Fraser, was investigating the investigation when he too disappeared. Evan is smarter and a lot more worldly than Arlo. Let's hope he is luckier, as well

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this engrossing new thriller featuring Evan Buckley. He has sharp instincts, humor, he's is frightless and always looking for justice. Finding Arlo is his main concern but as he unravels the mystery regarding the case Arlo has seem to be dumped into he cannot stop but wonder on finding the truth and delivering justice. His relationship with Guillory still has lots to be worked on but is improving, the one with Arlo's father leaves only as many doubts as possible. Another thrilling and entertaining book in the series. Highly recommended!
I thank the author for this ARC.

Nothing like starting a series at the end, but that's better than missing out altogether! I can't wait to go back to the beginning and catch up. Mr. Haper has created an awesome series and I enjoyed every minute of my reading. The characters are believable and realistic, the action is non-stop, and the plot grabs the reader from the first pages and doesn't let go. And even though I'm starting with the most recent book in the series I didn't feel lost, which is always a good thing.
I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion.

I loved the way the series kept me interested. Some misspellings along the way and missing words. Overall I think the series was well worth the read.

The plots are so well formed its impossible to guess at the endings. The characters are complex and have grown with the stories. I have thoroughly enjoyed the Evan Buckley series. I am happy to recommend these thrillers to one and all.

Another fast paced adventure in the Evan Buckley series. Just hope James Harper continues with the saga as I will genuinely miss reading about his escapades. The day he decides to throw the towel in, will be a sad day for readers who have followed his journey from book one.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 13, 2023
I have to say I don't read a lot of detective stories per se. However I always make an exception for James Harper's Evan Buckley. Once again the dogged PI takes us on another lengthy convoluted trip to solve the case. Or in this one cases. Evan is like a bloodhound sniffing out the clues, sometimes taking the long road to get there, but get there he does and retribution is dealt out in the Evan Buckley style that we have come to know and love.
I always hope that I will be able to work it out and I never do. Loving all the twists and turns.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and I voluntarily leave this honest review.
