Damage Controlled (Don't Ask, Don't Tell Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

What do you do when you find yourself stuck:
East of the Rock…
As Phoenix, Teddy is the reigning Queen of Drag Star, bringing the spark that sets the competition ablaze. However, Teddy’s tired of hiding behind his drag corsets. He’s ready to live his truth and build a committed relationship like his parents and best friends have. Revealing his secret could make it all happen or destroy everything he’s worked so hard for.

West of the Hard Place…
The VA dealt Gregory a crappy hand. All he wants is what he deserves so his life can gain some semblance of normal: a service dog to keep him safe from seizures and fair compensation for his service-connected brain injuries. Maybe then he’ll finally be able to find the one thing he desires most…
Love.

Trauma brings Gregory and Teddy together. Catastrophe binds them in a fight for survival. The struggle is real and the possibilities are endless but only if each has what it takes to help the other heal.

Is their fast and fragile relationship strong enough to bring all the damage under control?

Miski Harris is a stubborn native New Yorker and a veteran who raised five sons while traveling the world. Today she resides in Prince Georges County, Maryland, with her two precocious cats, Freddie and Marshall.

Her two lifelong constants have been her faith and her love of books. Reading and writing are her mainstays, and she is rarely seen without her Nook, which currently holds over 2,000 books, or a notebook where she jots ideas.

When Miski sets her mind to something, she’s a passionate advocate for what she believes in who’s not afraid to go after her goals.

Her first M/M romance novel was written after a close friend challenged her to join the National Novel Writing Month initiative.

Several years and many published works later, she primarily writes fade-to-black/closed-door romance with delicious angst, sweet but broken main characters, and the type of love that knows no boundaries. This formula makes for enticing contemporary stories and engaging tales where she ventures into the magical worlds of urban fantasy, shifters, and the supernatural.

Miski believes challenge defines worlds to conquer and lines to cross, love and faith are the most powerful forces in the universe, and the only thing hindering success is a failure to try. She invites you to join her in a world where love is second to nothing and life is the greatest adventure of all.

Teddy Washington aka Phoenix has entered a nationally televised Drag Queen contest and is now in the top group. Teddy is a trans and wants to be Phoenix for the rest of his life and after years of questioning when the right time would come for gender reassignment surgery, he finally realized there was no time like the present. He would reveal everything when the reunion for the contest arrived and since he was named the Drag Queen, he was ready to make a statement on his behalf and all the other people like him.

Gregory Grayson is a vet who returned home with traumatic brain injury. Now he must fight to get the help he needs. He has finally been elevated to a higher percentage as far as his injury which will give him more money but his need for a service dog to help him when he has seizures is an ongoing fight. It has been decided that medication is all he needs despite what his neurologist says. Men and women go off to fight for their country and when they return injured their country doesn’t fight for them.

When Gregory and Teddy first meet there is an instant attraction, and he is aware of Teddy’s upcoming surgery. Being bi Gregory is not in any way affected by Teddy’s gender reassignment, but Teddy’s old boyfriend Reuben is not as accepting even though Teddy broke off with him. Reuben has been making threats about saving Teddy money and doing the job for him. Whether that happens or not is not for me to say.

Not only did this book give me a better understanding of what trans go through and the harassment they face daily but also the process of training a therapy dog, it is amazing. In Teddy’s case he has a lot of support from family and friends and now a new boyfriend but not everyone is that lucky. My heart goes out to the LGBTQ community people who just want to be allowed to love who they want and unfortunately have so many people who are unaccepting. If we could accept differences this would finally be the world, we all hope for.

During this series I fell in love with Teddy. He has been an amazing drag queen, solid friend and steady counselor. I enjoyed every minute of him finding Gregory and seeing them find their HEA. And I love the theme of found family running through this series.

This finishes the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell series, I think. It is Teddy’s story, EJ’s best friend and Dale’s work partner from previous books. Teddy is a drag queen by night, and has entered a contest, but he has a secret and a long burning desire for a change that could impact his life in many ways. He also has a boyfriend who he is trying to lose, but is very persistent.
Gregory is a vet who came home with a traumatic brain injury, complete with seizures, as well as PTSD and panic attacks. Medication is not controlling his seizures, and he desperately want a dog to help detect oncoming seizures, and try to get his life back to some sense of normalcy. The two main characters don’t cross paths until about 70% of the way into the book, focusing first on background info on Teddy and Gregory and their issues, but once they meet there is an instant connection and attraction when they do. Gregory learns Teddy’s secret, and supports him all the way. When Teddy suffers a severe trauma, Gregory is there to support him and help him heal as the two look for ways to have a life together.

There is quite a bit of discussion on transgender transformation in the book, emphasizing counseling and thoughtful deliberation before taking any steps, and it is approached in a supportive and educational manner to the reader who may have little to no knowledge of the subject.

All three books deal with the three difficult subjects with thought and compassion, educating the reader throughout. A very thought-provoking series, each book not very long, but well worth the read.

OMG! This series has been good before now, but without spoiling anything The character Teddy and his drag persona Phoenix have featured as the most wonderful friend to many characters in past books, specifically EJ. Then Greg was a bit of a hard case in "group" previously but we get an up close look at him and OMG! these two are an amazing story. I was completely upset at one point and you will see where when you read this well written book. Highly recommended by me. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

I liked the service dogs and the way things worked out. The story was interesting, but it felt like there was a lot going on. Greg and Phoenix had a great connection from the start. An enjoyable read.

Teddy is a spitfire and beautiful to boot, loves their friends and helps whenever they can. Gregory is just looking for love and peace when he meets Teddy and get more than he bargained for but he can help but fall in love. There is so much hurt for these two but with the love of their friends and family they also find the peace they deserve and get their happy ending. ❤️😝

This was the most intense story yet. There are a few situations and issues that are presented in this that some may find triggering. Even with that, I still found this very worth reading.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

I enjoyed the connection these two had and how they navigated their relationship and the changes that came up. It was a nice end to this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a showstopper
Reviewed in Canada on August 25, 2023
I have enjoyed this series but Miski Harris really hits it out of the park with this showstopper about a trans drag queen and a veteran. The two main characters both have their problems and Gregory’s are more evident in the beginning as he needs help to cope with PTSD and seizures but it’s Teddy/Phoenix who really takes over the story. Ms. Harris has obviously done a lot of research into all of the various issues that these two characters have and she has done a superb job of writing those into a very readable story that never devolves into a lecture.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was the best story ever!

Miski Harris is a new-to-me author and I am thrilled to find her. The story of Destiny and Gregory surpassed every expectation. I highly recommend this book!
And I don’t understand why books 1 & 2 in this series are not available on KU. I’d read them in a heartbeat if they were.
