Doors Open When You Knock: A Realtor’s Handbook for Boundless Opportunity and Freedom Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 57 ratings

This is not one more book with tips and tricks to double your business overnight.

In case you haven’t noticed, tips and tricks usually don’t sustain you over the long run. You also don’t need one more book giving you the ‘secret’ to success. News flash: there is no secret. Have a winning mindset and strong work ethic, you’ll do just fine. There, you have the answer, but it probably didn’t make you feel any better. Why? Because you are still left with the following problems:

  • No time off - always on-call
  • Being stressed about where the next commission check is coming from
  • Working really hard but not getting to where you think you should be
  • Being overwhelmed - there is too much to do
  • Worrying about things outside of your control

Real estate can take people by the horns and toss them around. Doors Open When You Knock is about wrestling control back so that you can leave chaos and uncertainty behind, creating a business and a life that brings joy and fulfillment.

This book explores what is possible for you—if you are willing to look. It is about being clear. Taking intentional action over time. Developing patience and gratitude. Being responsible. Because if you want boundless opportunity and freedom, it doesn’t happen by accident, it happens on purpose: Doors Open When You Knock.

Steven Ross might be the “worst type of person to be a real estate agent” because he is an introvert--no parties or events, he doesn’t work nights or weekends, and you can’t find him online. Some may even think he’s a little lazy and anti-social. Yet, he built a successful real estate business twice by persisting and excelling at one thing and one thing only: knocking on doors - over 125,000 of them. He has become an expert in taking difficult action over time and connecting with people in a way that turns strangers into fans.

Originally from Southern California, Steven began selling real estate in 2005. He built his second real estate practice from scratch after moving to Colorado at the end of 2008, where he still resides with his family.

This book will help you gain more focus on what is most important to your career and life. I've been in direct sales for more than 40 years. Freedom is what many sales people want and enjoy. Freedom comes with distraction and this book addresses great ways to deal with them. Zig Ziglar would have loved this book because the author speaks of holding the right mindset along the way also. Not just for realtors! Anybody in sales, self employed, or who is
"their own boss" will like and benefit from this easy read.

I feel compelled to leave this raving review. It really demonstrates how hard work, discipline and motivation gets you anywhere you want to be. This book is one you’ll want to reread anytime you feel beat, tired with no will to go on. If Steven can knock on a million doors there is no excuse for any of us to do what we must to get ahead. Thank you Steven for sharing your story!

This book is so insightfull. It's as if Steven Ross channels all the great thinkers of the self improvment genre wraps it up into a very understandable package just for real estate agents. Although it was written for agents, the concepts in his book transend industries. It's a must read!

Here's the thing. This book is not really about door knocking. So if you don't want to door knock but do want to get focused and inspired, that's OK. This book is for you. That said, it just may inspire you to put on your walking shoes, print out a market report and head out to the doors! I read a lot of books on productivity, mindset and real estate. I enjoyed this book bc it speaks to all three in a way that's relatable and actionable. Real estate books are often tone-deaf and not emotionally intelligent. Way too sales-y. Mindset books are not about real estate. Productivity gurus often sound like they only apply to young tech founders. This book is for real estate agents (or really for anyone in sales or b2c businesses) who wants to build a sustainable career or reset their career to be more sustainable while also having an enjoying life with friends and family.

The book has good advice about perseverance and the real estate business that could be condensed down to two or three chapters. But what I found most troubling and annoying were the number of swear words spoken in the audiobook. Very unprofessional and distracting. In the written book, for example, Ross writes something like F@#$. But in the audiobook, he speaks the word aloud several times. That might not bother some people, but it did me.

Ross discusses the idea of persevering, staying on the right path, and not being distracted by shiny objects.with this in mind, I recommend Linda Schneider's doorknocking book. Years after it's publication, it still remains the best real estate doorknocking book available.

I purchased the kindle version of the book during winter break in 2022. This is quick and easy to understand book. As I am new to the real estate business, it helps me a lot to understanding the core concept of the business. I enjoyed reading this. It motivates me to go out and talk to people. As a real estate agent the first thing we should do is prospecting. If we do the hard job , life gets easy. So true . He talks about gratitude , patience and responsibility. Overall, it is a good book to read . Thanks Steven Ross.
