Down River by Stephen Gallagher has everything a good serial killer novel should—it starts off slowly, lets us spend time with the characters, subtly suggesting the terrors to come, before Gallagher pulls out all the stops in what turns into a full-throttle, bloody thriller. Gallagher demonstrates an uncanny control in manipulating the elements of the story, building the plot carefully; there is not a wasted word and the set-pieces are thrilling and horrifying”—Rebellion Publishing Reviews

Down River is the story of rogue plainclothes officer Johnny Mays, his fall from grace, and his former partner's one-man mission to bring him to justice.

Everyone on the force agrees that Johnny Mays is out of control. Nick Frazier is his one-time childhood friend, now his plainclothes partner landed with the task of keeping Johnny out of trouble. A task at which he fails, spectacularly, on one disastrous night that ends with two wrecked cars, four teenaged joyriders dead at the foot of a dam, and Johnny nowhere to be found. Johnny may not be dead, but in his mind he's left this life behind. And there are scores to be settled on the way out.

The manhunt is on, county-wide. But it's Nick who sets out to track Johnny down. His is the responsibility, and his alone. It's a quest that will take him back through the years, into the shared landscape of their childhood. A place where everything was possible. The best of times, when the worst was yet to come.

“Stephen Gallagher’s most ambitious, most committed book to date”—Kim Newman

“The denouement, thanks to Gallagher's strong writing and excellent characterisations, is unforgettable”—Publishers Weekly

“An out-and-out novel of paranoia, tension and sharply honed violence which confirms Gallagher as one of Britain's most exciting writers of literate, nerve-shredding thrillers. Down River is Gallagher's most impressive novel to date. He's stripped, oiled and tuned his prose until it growls like a Ferrari, smooth, fast, and very, very powerful. The horror is firmly rooted in reality, yet seems ready at any moment to veer into deep, dark shadows... an unstoppable, gut-wrenching ride to the last page”—Starburst

“His prose is clear and diamond-sharp, his imagination dark and vivid... a terrifying walk along the edge of nightmare”—Time Out

“Down River is the best British thriller to appear in recent years” —The Face

“Quite simply one of the books that made me want to become a writer. I adore this book. I wish I'd written it”—Steven Savile

Beginning his TV career with the BBC's DOCTOR WHO, Stephen Gallagher went on to establish himself as a writer and director of high-end miniseries and primetime episodic television. In his native England he's adapted and created hour-long and feature-length thrillers and crime dramas. In the US he was lead writer on NBC's CRUSOE, creator of CBS Television's ELEVENTH HOUR, and Co-Executive Producer on ABC's THE FORGOTTEN. His fourteen novels include DOWN RIVER, RAIN, VALLEY OF LIGHTS, and NIGHTMARE, WITH ANGEL. He's the creator of Sebastian Becker, Special Investigator to the Lord Chancellor's Visitor in Lunacy, in a series of novels beginning with THE KINGDOM OF BONES and THE BEDLAM DETECTIVE, continuing in THE AUTHENTIC WILLIAM JAMES.

Described by The Independent as "the finest British writer of bestselling popular fiction since le Carré ... Gallagher, like le Carré, is a novelist whose themes seem to reflect something of the essence of our times, and a novelist whose skill lies in embedding those themes in accessible plots." According to Arena magazine, "Gallagher has quietly become Britain's finest popular novelist, working a dark seam between horror and the psychological thriller.

The Daily Telegraph wrote, "Since Valley of Lights, he has been refining his own brand of psycho-thriller, with a discomforting knack of charting mental disintegration and a razor-sharp sense of place." Charles de Lint wrote in Mystery Scene magazine, "Gallagher is a master of abnormal psychology and he just gets better and better." Also in Mystery Scene David Mathew added, "never a writer to rest on his laurels, he has written good hard thrillers, some horror genre work (such as Valley of Lights), and a novel (Oktober) that might even qualify as a vague distortion of contemporary world fantasy... in places. You might go as far as to employ that overused phrase sui generis. He is, at any rate, one of the best writers of his generation."

Winner of British Fantasy and International Horror Guild awards.

I won't go into a rehash of the plot, because others have already done so - and besides, I'd be afraid of inadvertently including a spoiler. This was my first Stephen Gallagher novel, so I had no idea what to expect. Another reviewer has alluded to Gallagher's other novels being better ... if so, they must be pretty darned good.

It took a little while to get used to the pace of the novel, but the more I read, the more I was drawn into the characters, into their minds, and thereby into some dark places. Some may find the story to be slowed down a little by the vivid and detailed descriptions of the landscape of these people's lives, but for me it created a very real sense of the location and a strong sense of the bonds between the characters and their place in the world. A couple of the twists and turns caught me by surprise (always a good thing) and there was a decent feel of the sometimes grim realities and compromises of police work.

All in all it may not be everybody's cup of tea. However, for me at least, it was a compelling, sometimes chilling, but overall enjoyable read.

The action moved rather slow, although it had some great surprises along the way. It passed the time, but I would not call it a page turner.

Down River is a strong, character-driven psychological crime thriller. The characterisations of Nick, an everyman police officer and Johnny, his unhinged partner and child-hood friend are deep, personal and meticulously detailed. The reader is immersed in both character's stories, the most gripping being Johnny's moral and psychological deterioration following a near-death experience. Each character is made relatable and realistic by their flaws and motivations, making the more dangerous elements of the plot that much more powerful, including a murderous rampage that sets the tone. The plot twists and turns, but there is an occasional yet distinct lack of pace in the story-telling. However, it is necessary in keeping Down River's sense of place and character, and the pay-off is worth it. Down River is dark indulgence and I would highly recommend it.

Stephen Gallagher has always been a favourite of mine. His easy prose style never gets heavy or boring. His dialogue is realistic. But what I like best is his 'heroes' are always ordinary people in extraordinary situations. You really feel for them as they face their trials.
    Down river is no different.
The police character of Jennifer appears in a later book, nightmare with angel. The only instance of this in his fiction.
I also love how he evokes the sense of place, especially some of the seedy, desolate places his characters journey to (both in geography and in the mind).
With lots of twists, some obvious, some not at all, it is a pacy satisfying read.
    Another winner.

Having loved every other book that I've read written by Stephen , this is the first time I have actually stopped reading, tried to unsee a shocking image concerning a young father and baby son, utterly unable to continue.
