Down Under Fantasy Realms: An Anthology By New Zealand and Australian Authors Kindle Edition
High fantasy and low, magical realism, retold fairy stories, and even a hint of science-fiction – it's all here.
Some stories in this collection are excerpts, others are background or spin-off stories about characters in pre-existing novels, yet others are tasters of works-in-progress; the remainder are stand-alone tales.
You will meet star-beings, enchanted amphibians, dimension-traversing private investigators, faerie changelings, mysterious teachers, mercenaries, and cowgirls.
Within these pages, children are born who have a special destiny, and old men relinquish their powers as their journeys come to a close; truths are found and lies are exposed; fears are faced and dreams become reality.
There are links to the authors' websites and social media pages, too, so that when you discover your next favourite writer, you'll know where to find them.

'This anthology contains twenty works from some of the best New Zealand and Australian authors of speculative fiction writing today. Living in uncertain times we all need the opportunity to escape occasionally to other realms and this anthology allows us to do that. Some of the stories are prequels or backstories to published books or works in progress. For the reader familiar with these works, these add a richness and fuller understanding. If you aren't, don't panic no prior knowledge is needed as they mostly stand on their own. Many will make you want to seek out the various novels and read more. The anthology also contains excerpts from published novels, short stories and the retelling of myths. Regardless of their origin all of the works take us out of ourselves and to another place, although not always a happy one. This collection caters for a range of tastes from Cowgirls to Changelings to the Supernatural and everything in-between and beyond. The stories vary in length from four or five pages to nearly forty. Some are easier to read than others and not all are well resolved. You can completely immerse yourself in the majority of the works, but there are a few that will have your mind working overtime to comprehend. The wonderful thing about anthologies, is that we can dip in and out of them at will. The bio's and websites at the end, are a valuable resource for those that want to know more about the people that can conjure up such imaginative compelling stories. For anyone who wants or needs a temporary respite from their daily lives, this is the book for you.'

Belinda Mellor is an adopted Kiwi, who came to New Zealand on holiday from Ireland fourteen years ago - and forgot to go home. Over the years, she has written and taught fiction and non-fiction, dabbled in radio, scripted several plays, edited a couple of magazines, plus books, papers and other publications, spent time working in arts journalism and theatre-in-education, and won a number of literary awards. She has written a children's picture book called 'A Handful of Eggs', and two eco-fantasy/mythopoetic novels: 'Silvana - The Greening' and 'Silvana - The Turning', and, at the time of publication, is working on a third: 'Silvana - Restoration'. She also has an Irish folk-lore inspired YA novel in a state of near-finishedness. With a degree in theology and religious studies and a post-graduate diploma in Applied Spirituality she is fascinated by the big questions of life and what it really means to be human, and is particularly interested in myths, legends and folklore, so all her stories touch on those because she believes that's where truth is to be found.
Sue Perkins has enjoyed reading since she joined the library at age seven and by eleven she had begun to write her own short stories. In her teenage years she found fantasy books

About the authors
Sue Perkins was born and raised in Devon, England. After her marriage she and her husband traveled the world and now live at the top of the South Island of New Zealand.
Sue has been writing for many years and her first book was published in 2007. Since then the number of books published has risen to fifteen. Her favorite genres are fantasy, romance, young adult fantasy and juvenile fantasy.
When asked why she writes, Sue replies "all the stories in my head are demanding to be written so others may enjoy them".
As a child I had a ferocious imagination and immersed myself in creating stories and poems. One birthday, I begged for a chemistry set, sensing the promise of adventure from the glittering vials of copper sulphate and salt. At that time, I didn't know I was following in the footsteps of my grandfather who had studied science in Edinburgh in 1899. A further trace back into my Scottish ancestry uncovered an ancestor known as 'the wizard'. So I could dabble with potions, too, I gained a NZ Certificate in Science (Chemistry) and worked in a variety of laboratories (salt, meat, dairy and wine) in NZ and Australia. The wine tasted the best!
During my 5 years in Adelaide, Australia, I completed several writing courses at the WEA. When my partner, son (5 months), dog, and I moved back to NZ we lived in a house truck for 3 years while our off-the-grid house was planned and built. During this period I wrote on a solar powered laptop and completed many correspondence courses from the AWA.
I write adult fantasy, children's novels and I'm currently branching into romance.
In 2012 my children's MS, Hieroglyph was selected for the NZSA MS Assessment Programme and was further selected for one of five mentorships. Hieroglyph has won the Gold Medal in the UK Wishing Shelf Books Awards 2015, and a Silver Medal in the Readers' Favorite Book Awards 2016.
Please visit www.hieroglyph.ws for details about TC's adventures.
When I'm not glued to my laptop writing or engrossed in a book, I love walking my dog on the wild West Coast beaches and trolling for sea glass, riding my bike or going for bush walks. I always wished I could fly so maybe that's why I love roller coasters. I'm a connoisseur of coffee and chocolate and I counter my addictions with Boxfit and Spin classes.
I believe life is an adventure and we should all live a life less ordinary.

Ever since I discovered The Lord of the Rings, I've wanted to write. I was gripped by Tolkien's world and characters, and by how he could plot something so large and intricate.
Which is why my first novel, DARK MATTER, is a biology-based-paranormal-fantasy-with-a-twist-of-science-fiction-adventure-and-just-a-hint-of-thriller. It took five years to write and led to a lot of counseling.
My second book, STRAWMAN MADE STEEL, is hard-boiled detective fiction with a side of sci-fi, and simpler ;)
My third book, BLOOD AND INK, is a straight-up thriller. Not to give anything away, but if you ever stumble on what appears to be research for a murder novel, my advice is call the police.
I live in Perth, Australia, with my awesome wife and three (awesome) children. I have a PhD in Computer Science, and develop mobile applications. The kind of stories I love to write bend genres and invite scratching below the surface. I appreciate all honest feedback, and love talking story.
Kind regards,
Brett.
Belinda Mellor is a wanderer, currently living in New Zealand (she arrived on holiday 8 years ago and forgot to leave). Before that the same thing happened to her in Ireland. She was actually born in England. She loves myths and legends and folklore, so all her stories touch on those things because she believes that's where truth is to be found.
Kate Shaw lives in Nelson with her two daughters and a giant dog. Kate's urban fantasy series Danton Bay is accompanied by three additional short stories in the Down Under Fantasy Relms anthology.
Several more of Kate's short stories are included in the anthology series Lunch Book Three, recently released in paperback in New Zealand. In 2023 Kate's short story Out of Time won 1st place at the Northland National Short Story Competition.
Kate has also tried her hand at scriptwriting and, in 2020, she co-wrote her first short play, St Bridgid's Eve. On debut at the Nelson Fringe Festival, the play won the Best Newcomer award.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2022What a fabulous collection of shorts all exploring a different aspect of fantasy. Some of the stories are standalone to themselves, while others are background to full books, yet still make for compelling stories on their own. There's a lot to like here, but I have to say that my favorite was "Vision-maker" by Wendy Scott. This one, perfect jewel of a short story is worth the price of the anthology. I also liked "The Toad Lord" by Kirsty Anderson, which went in a very different and unexpected direction.
If you're looking for quick reads that will carry you off to unknown realms, this is the anthology for you. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2022“Down Under Fantasy Realms” is a wonderful introduction to a group of authors that includes excerpts, prequels, works in progress, and short stories in the fantasy genre. I was only familiar with one author, so this was a fun way to learn about new writers. I enjoyed many of the stories, and here are a few that stood out for me: “Vision-Maker” by Wendy Scott, “The Toad Lord” by Kirsty Anderson, and “Hands of a Healer” by Belinda Mellor. A unique collection that was well-written and full of magic, but also some darkness mixed in. Each story offered something different to suit a fantasy reader’s taste with a wide variety of creative imagination. If you are looking for a new fantasy author or want to be entertained, this is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2022This is a fantastic collaboration of seven authors from New Zealand and Australia, with the common theme of fantasy running through the stories. Some are excerpts from longer stories, and some are either background or spin-off stories about characters in other novels. But the one thing they all have in common is that they are well-written and compelling. It's hard to pick favorites. But one of the stories that really stood out was "Vision-Maker" by Wendy Scott. A Shaman for a tribe of pygmies births a child who is malformed. As per tribe tradition, the baby must be sacrificed to the spirits. However, as Necia prepared to leave the child for sure death in the elements, she was given a vision in which the child was a golden girl with perfectly formed limbs and the spirit of a warrior. After that, she could not let the child die as a sacrifice to the gods. I won't tell you what happened, but this story tugged at every heartstring I have. I also loved "The Toad Lord" by Kirsty Anderson. A talking frog, a magic ball, and a deep well make for an intriguing tale. The "Changeling" stories by Belinda Mellor also grabbed me and left me wanting more. If you are looking for stories that will entertain, warm the heart and make you believe in the power of magic, this collection is for you! I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating new anthology from Down Under!
This book is a super introduction to the work of talented authors from Australia and New Zealand. I really enjoyed the wide variety of the tales, which involved fantasy, science fiction, and even re-workings of myths and legends.
The really unusual thing about this collection is that, while many of the stories are complete in themselves, some are excerpts or tasters from longer works; there are also spin-off stories and companion scenes featuring characters and worlds from the authors’ other books. This approach was new to me, and I found it refreshing and original. All the stories are unique and gripping, the writing skilled and vivid. It gave me a sense of dipping a toe into various fantasy worlds, many of which I would now like to explore further.
I was already familiar with some of the authors – in particular Belinda Mellor, whose Silvana books I love. Others were new to me, but I shall certainly be looking out for more by them!
A great deal of love, dedication and hard work has clearly gone into this project. Best of luck to all the authors!
