Dreams of 18: A best friend's dad age gap romance (Heartstone Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,975 ratings

"You don’t go around kissing your best friend’s dad, do you? Even though that’s all you ever dream about."

Violet Moore is in love with a man who hates her. Well, to be fair, she kinda deserves it.

On her eighteenth birthday, she got drunk and threw herself at him, causing a huge scandal in their sleepy suburban town. Now everyone thinks she’s a slut and he has disappeared.

Rumor has it that he’s been living up in the mountains of Colorado, all alone and in isolation. But Violet is going to make it right. She’s going to find him and bring him back.

No matter how cruel and mean he is, how much he hurts her with his cold-hearted and abrasive ways, she won’t give up.

And neither will she think about his tempting lips or his sculpted muscles or his strong hands. The hands that she wants on her body, touching her, feeling her skin…

The hands that make her want to forget everything and kiss Graham Edwards – Mr. Edwards, actually – again.

Because you don’t go around kissing your best friend’s dad, do you?

Even though that’s all you ever dream about.

Note: This is an age gap romance featuring a grumpy older man who wants to deny his forbidden feelings for his son's best friend but has hard time with it.
Tropes: Bully Romance, enemies to lovers romance, alpha hero, anti-hero, morally gray hero banter, forbidden romance, grumpy sunshine romance, forced proximity, mental health romance, best friend's dad romance, angsty, age gap, medical romance

Beautiful Story!
Well done Saffron A. Kent this book was everything that I was expecting. I wanted to get the story from this shy girl named Violet who we first met in the book "Medicine Man" when she was with Willow and the rest of the girls at Heartstone Mental Hospital. Violet was this shy girl who though she was invisible to the world, who never tough people understand her, who never felt loved by her family. Everything change for her on her sixteen birthday when she saw for the first time her strawberry man (aka Mr. Edwards, aka the beast, aka her forbidden crush). She found a best friend in Mr. Edward's son and she didn't feel that lonely anymore. But two years later she makes a mistake that costed Mr. Edwards everything making him leave. Saffron always bring us the best taboo stories and this forbidden romance between Mr. Edwards and Violet (aka jailbait, aka princess but prefers Diva)its not different. My hearth really goes for Mr. Edwards because he wants to denied the attraction that he feels for Violet, he tries so hard that he becomes this monster, this ugly soul that its waisting his life away, that in reality blames himself for everything that happened. 9but of this Violet has no idea). So there is a lot of angst , lots of moments where I felt so many emotions but at the same time Saffron always makes me understand a little better how people with mental illnesses go through life. Violet and Graham become alive and visible to each other, their connection its undeniable don't matter the age gap difference , no matter what society thinks of them because really who are we to judge? . <"First of all, age is just a number. You're not what your age is. You are what you've gone through. Mark Twain said that age is just mind over matter."

Asking a romance reader to pick a favorite Saffron A Kent novel is like demanding a serial romantic tell you their favorite lover, an astronomer their favorite star... The reader may equivocate while lovers and astronomers will hem and haw saying they adore their favorite things all the same just differently. However deep down they all have one book, affair, mistress, star, constellation that changed them forever.

I’m not going to beat around the rose bush but I will tell you that this is the best book I have ever encountered in 2019, by this author period, since I first started devouring novels ever, and when I am 90 years old I will demand and insist that if you read only one book in your life, definitely make it Dreams of 18— a story that is hopelessly romantic, thrilling, and dark, and beautiful, standing out as edgy taboo in the juggernaut of contemporary fiction.

    About the book and characters:

Violet Moore: is a teenager who on the surface has a privileged childhood complete with a brittle and distracted mother and a sister who needs to be the center of attention at any cost. This is just the stucco exterior though, deeper Violet is an old soul, a lover of vintage music and the moon, lollipop eater, dear diary keeper, tree climber, star seeker from on roof tops at 2 am..... sadly all these qualities that make her wonderfully strange are seen as nuisance to her mother and sister alike. Violet tires her best to navigate this world with sharp edges while keeping her own desires dormant, until she sees the next door neighbor Mr. Edwards...and that is when need starts to bloom. (oh also Mr. Edwards is a bit older—minor detail)

The next two years are a mixture of stolen moments and glances and roses, Violet even steals the scent on his T-shirts. Her disguise to hide her obsession is frail and eventually a scandal breaks when she and Mr. Edwards are discovered sharing an accidental kiss the night of her 18th birthday.

The events that follow are what happens when one moment (as opposed to the 34 million random things you did but no one cared about), ruins your entire life, dismantling it piece by pieces and ultimately defines how society sees you.

Sticks and stones can break your bones but words and spun rumors will forever curse you:
In the aftermath Violet develops horrible panic attacks, crippling social anxiety and Mr. Edwards in turn leaves his job, the town, and goes into hiding becoming an ill tempered reclusive curmudgeon (well seclusion only makes him hotter so readers should fret not).

A bunch of stuff that happens next:

I’m not going to spoil the book but to sum it the rest of the story is about breaking that curse, finding beauty, and making the world feel like a safe place again for both Violet and Mr. Edwards.

    Reflections:

Kent’s books have always been a play of classic works and fairy tales. In this case, Dreams of 18 is an amalgam of Beauty and the Beast and a bit of Lolita (with all the delectable guilt but minus the breaking the law part) oh and Little Red Riding-hood (Mr. Edwards has big eyes and big hands and ahem ahem big everything else).

    What I loved the most:

All of Kent’s characters are radically honest and vulnerable; this is a strength not a weakness in a world we become distorted by other people’s judgment. And when it comes to being women navigating sexuality between what feels like society’s two approved choices of A- "slutty" or B- "prude”. Saffron’s Violet offer another alternative. She maybe just who you want to be when you transcend as a female and leave all these forces feed notions behind becoming just you, a woman with her own wants.

The prose in the book is also nearly lyrical and this author really know how to takes the simplest of words like “honey”, “baby” “bad”, ”red” “rose”, and just unravel the ordinary into something sacred, captiviting as a drop of ink blooming in a glass of water. Kent may claims not be a poet but I still consider her writing a kind of word sorcery.

    Favorite line:

“I’m hopeless and I’m a romantic. I’m a masochist. I’m addicted to less. I’m addicted to the pain. I’m addicted to him.”

To end, I highly recommend reading Dreams of 18. It’s a book about two people reclaiming something taken from them; their safety, their dreams, and needs and love because age is really just a number. So while Violet and Graham go looking for their souls in the lines of each other’s bodies, you might find a little missing part of your own right there with them. I sure did.

The story/plot was good. I think this author really has a hand on how individuals with mental illness function and act. I think she makes you think about how people view situations and navigate things others take for granted.

It's weird that I did have a harder time with this story because of Violet being 16 when it started and Graham being in his thirties. So, I started reading this, then stopped and read California Dreamin' (had no issues, even though Dean knew Fallon since birth). Came back and finished this story. However, it did not take away from my rating. This was still a really good story, and I'm definitely a fan of this author.

This was a book that astounded me with it's beauty, crushed my heart with it's emotion and had my temperature spiking with it's intense heat. As a big fan of the forbidden romance trope, I was very excited to read this book and trust me it did not disappoint. In fact it really blew me away. I found the complexity of the characters, their thoughts and the situation they find themselves in to be immensly involving and gripping. So much so that, I was stealing every single second I could to read from my work, my family and my sleep. Violet and Mr Edwards are flawed, imperfect people that are perfect for each other. There was never one single doubt in my mind about that. My heart truly ached for both of these characters. The roads that they traveled were painful and hard going and they had earned many scars and wounds along the way. For me, this couple's relationship was about so much more than physical intimacy. Don't get me wrong there is plenty of that and it is all scorching steam and dirty talk; but I thought the other things they shared were just so much more important. The deep emotional connection, the powerful need they had for each other, the strength that he brought out in her, the confidence he gave her and the softness, sweetness and the ability to dream she brought out in him. In all fairness, I will say that this is one of those books that you are going to swoon for or be turned off by. For me it worked, for others I'm sure it won't. It is a age gap romance that has that spark of unrequited attraction flare between sixteen year old Violet and her best friend's thirty-four year old father. Just as a note: there are no interactions of ANY kind that happen between these two until Violet is eighteen. I loved every second of this wonderful read that is in my opinion so much more than you would expect. This angst filled read simply stole my heart.

I have been anticipating Violet's book for a while and I'm glad I met her! It took me by surprise how broken and damaged she is, but I'm glad she faced her issues and evolved into someone stronger.

Her romance with Graham is pretty steamy if you ask me, but after all they've got their HEA.

This is a pretty taboo read, so do NOT read it if you aren't an adult!!

WOW! Where has this author been all my life!? This book has EVERYTHING I love in a romance novel. Age Gap✔️ Forbidden Love✔️ Sexual Chemistry✔️ Possessive Man✔️ Sex scenes that burn your kindle down and make you hot and bothered?✔️Not only can this author right in such a way that consumes you where you can’t put it down, but she throws in angst, passion, and beautiful tender moments that leave you breathless, and her sex scenes.... you guys I have never read something so hot. Her writing style is just PHENOMENAL, and I can’t recommend this book enough or this author. Saffron knows what we want and she freaking delivers.

Violet has always been different, she doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her and she does what she wants. She’s been alone most her life even though she lives with her sister, mother and step dad. But they never notice her, they don’t even know when her birthday is and her mom tried to get her aborted. So Violet has adapted, she likes being on her own she’s used to it. So when a new family moves in next door and she sees the new gorgeous man who is definitely a lot older than her she can’t help but feel this weird attraction to him. Something about him is calling to her, and now she can’t stop imagining all the things she wishes she could do/say to him. That is until she befriends his son, and now she must avoid him at all costs because you don’t crush on your best friends dad.

Mr. Edwards (Graham) was one of the best hero’s I have read in a long time. He was everything, and being 18 years older he knows he never should have even looked at Violet his sons bestfriend, so he pushes those thoughts aside. Except when Violet pushes him past his boundaries and his control slips.

I don't know how Saffron does it. Writes books that grip you by the heart and make you feel so much heartache for the characters, and there is so much intensity in their emotions. Violet's anxiety and illness is explained and treated so respectfully and she is such a beautiful character and so is Graham. In these books you get so invested and so caught up in the story unfolding, and the passion and the craving of each character that won't allow themselves to give into it.
Then when they do it's so hot, and in this book dirty, and delicious. Wow - I loved it so much! If you like a story with so much meaning, slow burn, forbidden age-gap romance and ALL the spice then these books are for you.
