Drive to Thrive (Formula Q Book 1) Kindle Edition
"It’s a great book with a lot of wonderful family and race car driver friends." -5-star review by Heather
"Please read this book, it is a wonderfully written story with beautiful characters... Definitely recommended." -5-star review by Marakita
Formula Q is the fastest motorsport in the world. Only the highest-performing athletes can make it to the grid. They drive fast, work hard, and play hard, but off-camera, anything goes.
The public knows me as Damon ‘the Speed Demon’ Davidoff, eligible bachelor and winner of FQ titles around the world. Fans adore me and my team supports me. They don’t need to know I’m so deep in the closet I intend to bury myself there.
Then my poor health catches up to me and my world comes crashing down. I could bounce back easily if it weren’t for one little complication: my male nurse is attractive as hell.
I can suppress these feelings during the season break—I have to. I’m not going to expose my secret just because I feel a fire coursing through my veins when Rocky puts his hands on me.
As the weeks go by, I somehow let Rocky under my skin and into my heart. He’s smart, sweet, and everything I never knew I needed.
I thought I wanted a clean bill of health and to keep winning my races. Now, for the first time in my life, I want so much more. I want him, and damn if that isn’t the scariest thing I’ve ever felt.
(“Drive to Thrive” is a male/male motorsports romance novel. It involves Christmas karaoke, New Year’s Eve parties, Las Vegas swimming pool dates, and yes, lots of racing action worldwide. It is book one of a series, has a HEA, and can be read as a standalone)

About the author

CD Rachels is an Asian American male author of MM romance. If you're looking for an Own Voices perspective with diverse cultures, you've found it!
In 2020 during quarantine, he read more romances than he ever had in the previous 29 years combined. But, he noticed a distinct lack of BIPOC voices, and now he's on a mission to change that.
He lives in New York City with the love of his life and works in healthcare. If you're reading this, he's honored that you took the time to help support him as a self-published author.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 20244.5 stars! I just discovered CD Rachels and I’m super excited I did. Rocky and Damon had a bumpy little start, but they were adorable together. Damon was such a wonderfully chaotic mix of confidence and shyness and longing, and Rocky was sweet and had a heart big enough to hold an ocean. Fun, sexy, and full of intriguing side characters I’m dying to read more of!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2024Nicely cute and funny, Rachels' first in series novel explores the coming out trope with a mixed culture pair. Writing about a relationship that is hidden and the angst that triggers is done well. While the MCs are both professionals, their courtship feels very YA. With a cast of characters on the driving circuit to explore, it may be an interesting series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2023Drive to Thrive by CD Rachels is a fun read about a closeted Formula Q racecar driver and the out & proud nurse who is hired to give him several medical treatments over the course of a couple months. The attraction is instantaneous, and the forced proximity just causes it to grow. They have their share of struggles with coming out, paparazzi, and fake girlfriends, but everything works out in the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2023I was quite interested in Damon and Rocky’s story based on the blurb, but the book didn’t entirely pan out for me. Some of the phrasing seemed rather stilted and I lost patience with Damon around the midway point when he just wouldn’t own up to being with Rocky. The ending redeemed things somewhat, but this ended up being one of those books I read in fits and starts instead of straight through. I’m sure there are plenty who will enjoy the book, but it didn’t strike the right chord to keep my interest.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2023If you’re a Formula 1 fan, this one’s for you (if you’re not, it’s still for you)! As one myself, there was no doubt going into it that I would enjoy my first Rachels works. Also, I guarantee that you will be guessing which F1 driver Rachels is subtly hinting at through Damon, our race car driver MC.
There’s something so magical about discovering a good author whose books you haven’t yet read. Especially after finishing your first work of theirs, you know you’ve found something worthwhile and you can’t wait to read more of their work.
Damon is my first race car driver MC in an MM romance novel. Obviously you have your conventional athletes, Popstars, mafia leaders, etc etc. Definitely refreshing to explore different MC roles. Rocky is the sweetest and ambitious nurse who’s looking for the right man. And Damon is that right man.
The subtle hints of F1 and Filipino culture throughout the book is definitely nice to notice, especially if you know what they mean. We love the representation.
My only issue, though not a largely pressing one, is that there were parts throughout the plot where I feel there were holes. Not holes, but they could have been more complex or deeper explored in order to further intricate the details.
Anyways, a lovely read, would definitely recommend to any lover of MM romance! Can’t wait to go through more of Rachels’ works and continue reading the Formula Q series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2024Well written, fleshed out characters, great love story. I really loved how I could see myself in the main character, as he struggles to balance work and life.
Loved and will read again!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2023You definitely want to read this one, CD Rachels did an amazing job of bringing Damon and Rocky into our hearts. I love how heartfelt their story is, and the support they have in their family and friends. Definitely a must read!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2023Loved this story & highly recommend to those who like a little octane to keep the pace up, but also want a shorter story that doesn’t fudge on details.
Damon & Rocky are characters I would love to hang out with so much.
Damon has health issues that popped up right on stage after celebrating a win.
Rocky is the nurse who arrives to help with protein IVs & is understandably attracted & not ashamed being out, while Damon is also attracted but not certain why.
As the story progresses, we learn more about our MMCs, what makes them tick, why they’re perfect together, etc.
So, if you like some octane in your stories but also want character development, I do believe this is the story/series for you!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I loved the way the author handled Damon’s chronic illness and didn’t shy away from it, it was no only touched on the surface but it was really thought out.
As a non sporty person it was reallly easy to follow the sport part of the book and it was really exciting to learn a little bit about racing.
Damon and Rocky have amazing chemistry, but the real MVPs are Rocky’s family. Can’t wait for the rest of the series ❤️❤️

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I wasn't too sure about a story set around Formula racing but the blurb pulled me in, thank goodness. This is a lovely tale, slow grow romance, a big splash of angst, and just a touch of actual racing, blend them all together and you have a winner. Rocky and Damon along with their friends, family, and fellow racers and mix in for a solid story, I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I've been binging CD Rachel's books because finding great MM stories written by queer peeps are hard to find, esp when they are just so good.
Racing, love and low angst what more do you want!

4.0 out of 5 stars This was a really sweet read!
Drive to Thrive is an incredibly sweet book with BIPOC and chronic illness rep - plus lots of smoking hot race car drivers, what more could you want?!
Damon ‘The Speed Demon’ Davidoff is an Australian (although raised in the US) professional FQ driver (think F1, but made-up) and finds himself at the centre of a lot of unwanted attention when he collapses after a race. All throughout his life he has been battling a chronic illness in his digestive system and it has finally caught up with him. In order to keep his racing contract, he has to undergo treatment to manage his condition.
Rocky Acala, a Filipino nurse, cannot believe his luck when he meets his new client - a totally smoking hot FQ driver… not that Rocky knows anything about racing, he just loves graphic novels and pursuing his dream of being an artist himself. After spending time together giving Damon his medical treatments, Rocky feels himself growing closer to the closeted driver. They both realise they love spending time together, but Rocky doesn’t know if he can be Damon’s secret, especially whilst he travels the world racing.
This book was a sweet yet angsty read - so so much mutual pining! Rocky and Damon clearly like each other from the get-go, but Damon believes he can’t be out in the racing world and Rocky doesn’t want to hide in the closet with him. There is a lot of will-they-won’t-they in the book which made me want to shake them both very hard! I appreciated the supporting cast of diverse and well-thought out characters who dispense a lot of great advice and are generally very lovely 💕
All in all a great sports romance with a very sweet HEA 🏎️💨
