4.4 out of 5 stars 251 ratings

Lauren has a Druid-possessed dagger.
It gives her orders and sometimes stifles her speech. It wants her to find some artifact here in 1400s Scotland and give it to some druid friends. She wants to get to know Taran. But the dagger whispers that Taran is in the way.

Taran's life in a small town in Scotland was disrupted six months ago with the arrival of Lauren and the other two lasses. Lauren knew the way mechanical things worked in a way most astonishing. He never tired of hearing her explain. But then he finds out she has a magick dagger.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Taran's book follows his older brother Leif's, and was even better! The action was on every page. Even though you knew Taran and Lauren were interested in each other, it wasn't till toward the end that you truly grasped the depth of their love.

I love how the author's thread of the druids' quests is an ongoing part of the story, and it is subtle. I love how the author places an emphasis on a couple and we see the story all around them.

I also love the dialect in her books and really enjoy this series because its different from others and captures the heart. It isn't intense or steamy. Just a fun, light and breezy read. I love the characters, and the way they overlap in the books. You'll see some familiar faces no matter where or when the story take place.

I'm glad there was a recap of some of the prior stories in this book so that anyone could pick up Taran and be more or less up to date. However, they did miss all the fun of the prior stories!

Of all Jane Stain's books, I liked this one the best so far but am looking forward to Katherine and Luag's story next!

From the Author

The historical event behind the Leif - Taran - Luag trilogy is the Battle of Harlaw.

This was a Scottish clan battle fought on July 24, 1411 just north of Inverurie in Aberdeenshire. It was one of a series of battles fought during the Middle Ages between the barons of northeast Scotland (Gaels and Viklings) against those from the west coast (Picts and Vikings).

The battle was fought to resolve competing claims to the Earldom of Ross, a large region of northern Scotland. Robert Stewart, Regent of Scotland, had taken control of the earldom as guardian of his niece Euphemia Leslie. This claim was contested by Donald MacDonald, Lord of the Isles, who had married Euphemia's aunt Mariota.

Donald invaded Ross with the intention of seizing the earldom by force. He advanced on Aberdeen with 10,000 clansmen. Near Inverurie, he was met by 1,000-2,000 of the local gentry, many in armour, hastily assembled by Alexander Stewart, who was Earl of Mar, nephew of the Regent of Scotland, and son of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan and called the Wolf of Badenoch (1343 - 20 June 1405).

After a day of fierce fighting, there was no clear victor. Donald had lost 900 men before retreating back to the Western Isles, and Mar had lost 600. The latter could claim a strategic victory in that Aberdeen was saved.

Within a year, the Regent of Scotland had recaptured Ross and forced Donald to surrender. However, Mariota was later awarded the earldom of Ross in 1424. The Lordship of the Isles would keep the title for much of the 15th century.

The ferocity of the battle gave it the nickname "Red Harlaw".

Wow! Just another wonderful story in the Dunskey Castle series! I loved the story! With Taran, we are taking a little more serious tone with Lauren and dealing with Galdus...

Once again, we are taken deeper into the world of the druids and the extent of their magic. We also learn more about the conflicts among the different groups - but they can unite for a common cause. The author brings this era alive with her description of everything so vividly you feel that you are there. We learn more about not only Lauren and Taran but also the other characters in this time. Our characters are also fleshed out vividly as real people with real concerns and doubts - they aren't perfect, yet we love them for it.

I love how the author's thread of the druids' quests are an ongoing part of the story, and it is subtle. I love how the author places an emphasis on a couple and we see the story all around them.

I really enjoy this series because its different from others and captures the heart. I can't wait to read the next one! This is a series that I hope keeps going! I love the escape!

Taran: A Time Travel Romance (Dunskey Castle, #8), my eleventh read from author Jane Stain, an author I've wanted to read since I began acquiring her books back in 2017, I own 21 of them. I got this book back in August of this year & am just now getting around to reading it as I've committed to reading the Dunsky Castle series in its entirety. I look forward to the next book from her, Luag: A Time Travel Romance (Dunskey Castle Book 9), but what really got me going was narrator Andrew McDermott, I love his Irish brogue. “I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Taran's story is a bit hard to follow, and feels quite rushed. I enjoyed the plot, but felt as if the story needed to be told rather than wanted to be told

Another great book in this series! I received a copy as an ARC in return for an objective review. I enjoyed that there was a recap of some of the prior stories so that anyone could pick up the book and be more or less up to date. However, they did miss all the fun of the prior stories! I enjoyed the flow of this story, a little quicker than usual as if the story couldn’t wait to hit paper. The romance in the story between Taran and Jessica, developed over time. She was under the control of an evil Druid who could read the minds of whomever she touched. Resulting in a drawn out, but well written romance between the two. When they did get together, it was not with the thought of “it’s about time”, but rather a happy “all right” because the timing was great. While these are written to be stand alone books, it would be a loss to nor read the previous books in this series. The richness of writing about the history in the different stories would be lost in the quick recap. Always an enjoyable read, I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. Luag!

I got this book with a freebie offer, but have read the rest of the eight book series with Kindle Unlimited. I found the series enjoyable. It isn't intense or steamy. Just a fun, light and breezy read. You will have to suspend disbelief concerning the premise, however. These eight books use pseudo magic as a vehicle for time travel, not pseudo science. The author isn't a Lynn Kurland (MacLeod and de Piaget family series) or a Bethany Claire (Morna's Legacy) both of which are five + star authors, but I am looking forward to Jane Stain's next book in this series, nonetheless.
