Then I purchased your ESL games for Elementary and tried the lesson plan for the Alphabet- they loved it! Everyone participated during the whole class and it was a huge success, especially with my IMPOSSIBLE group of 10, 4th grade boys- they had so much fun! Thanks again for your excellent work.

Classes are more fun and the teacher is more confident
I keep using the games from 176 esl games book and so many things have changed for me for the better. My classes are more fun, I'm gaining more confidence as a teacher and my pupils love the games and are learning very fast!!! It's all been really great!

Your games just shine and sparkle with so many activities offering lots of natural repetition
I have plenty of good ideas of my own (being CTEFLA qualified and I have been teaching kids for some years now) but Wow, I must tell you: I am really so impressed with all of your abundance of ideas and games and activities!
Your ideas for games just shine and sparkle with so many activities offering lots of natural repetition, in a way that does not look awkward or strange to the weaker students, but just seems natural and keeps them safe and happy! And in fact everyone in class will benefit from this approach of course!
They combine fun with so much repetition that weaker students can be the ones who get more listening practice as they can first listen to the stronger ones, e.g. in your relay game, where the same word is repeated over and over again. This way one can keep the weaker ones feeling safe in the group. This is extremely important for me, too, because I often have new students join an existing group and/or have to deal with mixed ability classes.

She saw a change in her pupils behaviour, even the problematic ones!
After purchasing and using the English Language Games for Children games e-book, I see a big difference in my group of 6 year olds. We played our new games I truly saw a a change in their behaviour. They participated and were very excited, even the boys that I had problems with. Now at every lesson they ask: What new game are we going to play today?

This teacher has changed the way she feels about teaching now
I really am so glad I found your stuff...it has completely changed the way I feel about teaching now. Before it was something I had always stressed over....the planning, that is....although I am both Celta and PGCE qualified I still found myself very stressed until every lesson was planned...which could take for ever.
Since discovering your materials I sit down to enjoy the planning...and love the teaching. It uses the fun approach I believe in through the theatre work I have done, and you have given me the confidence to know it can be applied to language learning for this age group.
The kids love it and so do the parents!

About the Author
Teacher, musician and creator of Teaching English Games and Home English Teacher.
Shelley noticed that children learning English in primary schools managed to go through years of lessons and retain virtually nothing, aside from "my name is ..." and colours. She was determined to get better results for her pupils. Instead of being faced with a class of children who forget the unit no sooner the page is turned, she chose to teach using games, and focus the bulk of class time on the listening and speaking skills, with hundreds of language drills, disguised in fun formats.
She created a collection of games from her experiences to share with other teachers. She has since shared her ideas with thousands of teachers around the world, bringing enthusiasm and a love of learning into the classroom, as well as great results.Shelley Vernon holds a BA degree in languages from Durham University, 1989, a BA in music from Canterbury Christchurch College, 2000 and a TEFL qualification.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2014I bought this because I have another teaching game book of Shelley Vernon that is geared towards adult learners. However, I thought it might be nice to have a digital copy of a game book with some games that were appropriate for my younger students. I just recently started to load up my tablet with things that I can use in my classroom. I like having this book with me at work because I can use it when I am writing my lesson plans. Each game has the category, materials needed, target English level of the students, and the group size that it can be used with so it is easy to find one to use. Another perk to having this on my tablet at work is that when we finish a lesson early I can quickly find a game for us to play in the last few minutes. I have gone through and highlighted some of the ones that do not require any materials and don't take a long time to play.
The last thing that I like about it is something that I didn't like about other books. Some game books have only games that everyone already knows like Hangman. This book had a lot of games that I never had before or variations that I never thought of... So that was nice. I wish that I had had this book when I used to be a substitute teacher. Sometimes the teacher did not leave a lesson plan or there was extra time at the end of the class. If I had this, I would have been a more popular sub!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2014This is one of the better books of games for language arts/ESL and EFL classrooms on the market today. Many of the games require the teacher to either have or to make flashcards, but I heartily recommend this book because there are games ideas that do not require flashcards. There is also a lot of good advice by the author on how to utilize these games in your classroom.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2014This book has been a great help and I found that my pupils learn vocabulary easily, and actually remember it ! In addition it's really fun teaching like this, even I enjoy myself more in the lessons. It can be hard work keeping the noise down but a simple tip in the book gets around that problem, by playing all the listening games silently (just the teacher or designated pupils are allowed to speak otherwise the offending team is eliminated). There are a ton of ideas in this book so that even a well-known game like Simon Says is written up with fresh angles and ways of using it. To any new teachers I'd say this book is a must-have. To seasoned teachers who don't use that many games I'd also highly recommend this book. If you are a teacher who uses games from start to finish then I'd say get the plays and skits by the same author instead.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2019This book has many interactive games and educational activities to do with your ESL/ELL students. I refer to it many times when I need to get my students' attention and offer them activities which align with their learning style. Because ESL/ELL classes can have multiple levels in one class, this book can help you (teacher, aide, substitute) address each learning style without having to do individualized learning plans. (Which is almost impossible for one teacher to do with multiple students.)

- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2016This book is full of fun interactive games for kids! It will take me a very long time to try them all out. There are also free downloadable lesson plans that come with the purchase. My wish for the next edition is that the games are grouped by Language Domain. This way I could flip directly to the pages that have Speaking games, etc. Thanks to Shelley for making my teaching life easier! I love not having to reinvent the wheel.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2016I am constantly on the search for ways to teach English using an active format. This book is full of great ideas that I have not seen before. In addition, when you contact the author, she has great resources to support implementing the ideas. After getting this book, I ordered the electronic versions of other resources because I wanted to quickly have access to these great resources. I am super impressed! For a beginner at teaching there are helpful tips to get you started. If you are a pro, then jump right into the activity. I use these materials in a summer camp setting and I know the campers will love these activities and also really improve their English! Thanks so much!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best ESL resource I have come across!!
I'm new to teaching English to primary school children and I felt I wasn't doing a particularly good job until I found this book! My classes used to be dull and boring. But not anymore! Since I started using the ideas and games from the book my lessons are just amazing, both for the kids and for me! I see students previously not interested in English joining in with the games and learning without even realising it! I see them remember almost 100 percent of the material from each class. I see them run to me in the school corridor and asking when our next lesson will be because they can't wait to play more games. I used to have lots of class management issues with the lower grades but thanks to the tips and ideas in the book - not anymore!!! I love this book! I would recommend it to any teacher who cares about his/her students and wishes them to have wonderful learning experience! The best part for me personally is that I gained so much confidence as a teacher since I got this book! I used to be scared going into the classes, but now they are exactly the kind of classes that got me into teaching in the first place!
