- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed this engrossing and suspenseful story, in spite of a slight tendency to redundancy (more evident in the earlier chapters). Some, though not all, of its suspense comes from the characters-misunderstanding-each-other device that tends to annoy me, but that approach is handled well. The main characters are well drawn, as are some of the secondary characters (though the villain is on the one-dimensional side).

- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMy rating for The Earl's Runaway Governess, by Catherine Tinley: 3 stars
This was the first book I've read by Catherine Tinley. It was entertaining, and was well written. The author obviously researched the time period, and did a decent job with historical accuracy.
My rating would be higher, but I found the H hard to like at times. Ash was okay, but he was really arrogant and kind of selfish. He seemed to constantly jump to the wrong conclusion about others motives, and definitely did that with Marianne. His arrogance and tendency to unreasonable anger almost led to a terrible life for Marianne -- and almost made him lose her forever. I honestly thought she forgave him too quickly, because Ash should never have believed the lies her stepbrother told about her.
I really couldn't stand Marianne's stepbrother, but I'm sure that is what the author intended. It seems she wanted to show how perilous life in that time could be for a young woman. Since Marianne had lost her parents, she was under the complete control of her stepbrother, who wanted only to use her for his own benefit.
My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2024Format: Kindle4 1/2 stars. I really enjoyed this story! The last half was quite suspenseful. The earl, Ash, was arrogant and stubborn, but he was also a good, principled man. Marianne was a fine young lady who was in danger. There was plenty of passion for each other, but there were no embarrassing intimate details. That was quite refreshing.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2019Format: KindleMarianne Grant never expected to end up trying to find a job as a governess but needs must as she escapes the custody of her lecherous, stepbrother guardian. Without references, she manages to secure a position at Ledbury House. She's to teach the daughter of the Dowager Countess Kingswood and relishes the chance to live quietly with them in the countryside. Only, the household isn't what she expects as the new Earl of Kingswood makes his presence felt.
William 'Ash' Ashington enjoyed his carefree existence until fate steps in after the death of his cousin John. After the reading of the will, he's stunned to find he now has the earldom and its responsibilities. Arriving at Ledbury house, he's shocked at the conditions he finds, however, the newly installed governess for his late cousin's daughter is a distraction he never envisaged.
When Marianne and Ash's lives collide, both are at life-changing times of their lives. For the first time in his life, Ash has obligations and somehow the challenge is more rewarding than he ever expected. Marianne is resourceful, making use of her education to create a stable life for herself and somehow due to their changed circumstances the find common respect.
This is my first Catherine Tinley novel and it won't be my last. I've always enjoyed reading regency historical novels and this author is definitely one to look out for, The narrative encompasses the atmosphere of the early nineteenth century and includes a wonderful mix of secondary characters. With an eventful and entertaining narrative added to the mix, Marianne and Ash's happy-ever-after is the satisfying finale of an eventful life journey where love conquers all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great story from Catherine Tinley
A lovely historical romance that cleverly tackles the issues around male dominance and women's rights in an era where women had no voice. A respectful journey through the difficulties a young woman may have faced in those times with a smart mode of delivering justice

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely captivating romance, beautifully written
This is the story of a young woman in Recency England and the shocking dependency she has on her unscrupulous male step brother. She is reliant on him for a roof over her head, food and clothing. When his debauchery threatens her physically she manages to escape with the aid of faithful servants and to find a place as a governess looking after the niece of an Earl.
What I liked about Marianne, the female lead, is her feistiness, her ingenuity and her intelligence. The Earl may rescue her but in her own way she rescues him too. I am a great fan of Catherine Tinley and enjoy her subtle, slow burn approach to her stories. Highly recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars MR
I brought this book a new author for me because 19 people had given it 5 stars...well I've come to the conclusion that these 19 people must have been reading a different book to me because I found it the most boring book I've read in a long time.... It has made me re think putting too much value on these reviews

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWow! Another brilliant, compelling novel from Catherine Tinley.
Yet another book that made me stay up late, postpone other things and generally sneak back to whenever possible.
Marianne’s story is one of inner strength and courage. A delightful leading lady.

A fabulous historical romance, gripping and not rushed at the end like many of these types of book. Look forward to reading more of her books.
