Adena Bernstein Astrowsky is the grandchild of two Holocaust survivors. Her grandmother often spoke to her about her experiences during the Holocaust, which had a profound impact on her life. She continues to honor her grandmother's life by speaking about her grandmother’s survival and lessons learned from the Holocaust.
Adena has dedicated her career to helping the most vulnerable of our society. She did this by prosecuting child sexual abuse cases and domestic violence cases within her local district attorney's office. Currently, she handles foreign extradition cases. Adena taught Sunday School at her temple for eight years, and in her last two years she co-taught a Holocaust studied class. Adena regularly contributes articles to MASK (Mothers Awareness on School-age Kids) Magazine, often writing about topics such as children's safety, drugs, and laws. Once a month Adena volunteers at the local Scottsdale library with her therapy dog, Charlie, as part of the Tail Waggin' Tales Program. Adena has also chaired events to raise money for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Adena was recognized for her professional and philanthropic work with an Amazing Woman Award from the Phoenix Suns and National Bank of Arizona. Adena’s greatest role, however, is as the mother of three very active teenagers.

Hilary Levine has been an educator in Fresno, California, for almost 30 years. Teaching the Holocaust to her students is a passion. She teaches students in 5th grade through high school. Over the years, Hilary also became interested in her family genealogy. After many years, she built out an extensive family tree. She discovered that many distant relatives were murdered in the Holocaust. With the support of her family, Hilary embarked on a Master’s degree program at Gratz College in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Hilary wrote the educator’s guide to the memoir, Living Among the Dead by Adena Astrowsky. The guide was the final project to finish her Master’s degree. Hilary hopes the guide will assist teachers in facilitating the complex subject of teaching the Holocaust. The guide will complement the memoir for teachers to use while reading it with their students.
