Editorial Reviews

Review

There are thousands if not tens of thousands of books about WWII and the Holocaust. Especially important in my eyes are the non-fiction memoirs and biographies written by Holocaust survivors and now, children and grandchildren of survivors. These NON-FICTION, true stories comprise unassailable witness testimonies of the terror inflicted by Germany and its collaborators on the peoples of Europe, in particular the civilian Jewish people living in Europe, targeted by Germany for death and their property stolen. Ms. Astrowsky's bio of her survivor grandmother stands alone as a beautiful and inspirational story and book. Now comes Ms. Astrowsky with a guide to help teachers who are teaching courses on the Holocaust get the most out of using her biography in their classes. The Guide includes thoughtful questions to ask students, for example, the themes of the biography and how they might relate to their own lives. It includes a glossary of Hebrew or Jewish words that may be foreign to students of any age. It also includes supplementary material such as a timeline of WWII and the Holocaust, links to audio and visual material relevant to the history. Throughout the Guide thoughtful questions are posed to help connect students' personal lives to themes of the book, such as resilience. This Guide is a wonderful addition to Ms. Astrowsky's biography of her grandmother. It is a pedagogical tool that will definitely make teachers' jobs easier and students' learning about the Holocaust "stickier." I highly recommend Ms. Astrowky's bio and Guide as a unique and important package that will likely be used widely in courses or course sections on the Holocaust. In the interests of full disclosure - Ms. Astrowsky's bio and Guide are published by the same publisher as my Holocaust biography "Separated Together." The small, European, Amsterdam Publishers is the world's premier publisher of selective, non-fiction Holocaust memoirs and biographies. I have never met Ms. Astrowsky and do not know her personally. I know her only by her work - work that is a terrific contribution to Holocaust education. - Kenneth Price, Ph.D., Author of Personal-Historical Memoir "Separated Together" — True story of Abe and Sonia Huberman who were separated for 7 years during the Shoah
