Thin Ice: MM Small Town/Hockey Romance (The Elmwood Stories Book 4) Kindle Edition
The hunky dad, the hockey coach, and a new start...
Bryson
Elmwood isn’t good for my love life. Hey, I’m a positive person and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about small-town living, but I haven’t had a date in years. That’s fine—my son is and always has been my number one focus.
Except now he’s grown and gone. And it’s lonely.
Okay, yes, the new hockey coach is hot and single, but he’s off-limits. Smitty’s trouble with a capital T, and his baggage might outweigh mine. Besides, we said nothing would happen after “that” night. It was a one-time, never to be repeated deal.
At least…that’s what I thought.
Smitty
Am I sad about retiring from pro hockey? Honestly, no. I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t in pain. I need a rest and I could use a distraction from unwelcome memories at home. Stat.
So…Elmwood.
Look, we all know I won’t last a whole season of coaching high school kids, but stepping in till they find a better candidate is a good temporary plan. And Bryson’s here.
There’s something about the hot dad with the sunny smile and bad dad jokes that makes me feel alive again. I’m not in the market for forever—been there, done that. Look, I’ve taken risks for my sport, but I’m not giving my heart away again. I know thin ice when I see it.
Or do I?
Thin Ice is an MM bisexual, age-gap, small-town romance featuring a silver fox dad, the new hockey coach, and a fresh start on solid ground.

Review
This time Lane is serving up a delicious romantic treat of age gap, fresh starts, and two great characters of incredible depth and heart. Plus hockey of course!— Amazon Reviewer 5 Stars
The way the relationship develops is sweet, the townspeople are entertaining, the crisis point is heartbreaking, and the resolution is wonderful. I read the book in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't wait for what comes next.— Amazon Reviewer 5 Stars
Smitty was hilarious!! Loved him! Together they were so good for one another. I love this series and can't wait for the next book!!! — Amazon Reviewer
Soulful and sweet - Two people with some emotional baggage find each other and begin a journey that makes them both realize that change is not always a bad thing.— Amazon Reviewer 5 Stars
Thin Ice explores the small-town romance genre mixed with hockey/sports in a perfect balance. I have to give Lane Hayes an A+ for the dad jokes sprinkled in; I love them! As the book progresses, we learn what is truly holding Bryson back and watch Smitty slowly break down those guarded walls. If you are looking for heat, Thin Ince packs it!
— Amazon Reviewer
Oh I loved this book, definitely my favourite one so far.
While on the surface it seems relatively low angst, it's actually got a much more serious undercurrent than first appears.
What I loved the most about this is how mature the relationship is. It might start off from a position of sexual attraction and the thrill of a hidden "affair" but both men find themselves opening up and sharing the hurts they've kept locked up tight.
— Goodreads Reviewer 5 Stars
This book was full of dad jokes and spice. It was a beautiful story of self discovery and the importance of putting yourself out there to get what you want. With more books anticipated in this series and potential expansions into neighboring towns, I can't wait for more heartwarming tales from Elmwood.— Goodreads Reviewer
This age gap, hunky dad and hockey coach, small town romance is just a perfect low angst read you need right now.— Goodreads Reviewer 5 Stars

About the author

Lane Hayes lives in sunny Southern California with her amazing husband, who thankfully doesn’t mind cooking, and their fabulous fox red Labrador, George, who’s pure mischief. Both provide oodles of inspiration for the low-angst, humorous books Lane loves to write.
She’s been telling stories about sexy, funny, sometimes geeky and quirky men who find love for a dozen years now and loving every minute. In her previous life, she sat at a desk and dealt with numbers, so yes…romance is much more satisfying!
Lane loves tea, travel, and chocolate…in any order. Add a book and she’s set!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2025I really love this series and I'm going to hate it when I've read all the books. Lane Hayes has magic in her fingers. Light on the angst and heavy on humor and love, this is an awesome set of books. You're missing out if you don't read The Elmwood Series!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2024Loved Smitty and Bryson! Was glad to see Bryson get his happy ever after, after meeting him in JC’s book. Glad Jake came around and he was happy for them. Would love to see them raise their 2nd kid. Looking forward to Denny getting his HEA.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2024I was living for this story of two wonderful men who were able to find happiness after divorce. At first glance, Smitty seems like the stereotypical cocky hockey jock. However, you quickly learned there is more than meets the eye. He is actually a pretty sensitive soul who struggles with his losses. Bryson is an amazing dad who put himself to the backburner for years. He finally finds sone happiness, but struggles to allow himself happiness. Thankfully, his son and ex want him to be happy, so they make him feel okay with things. Smitty finally comes out to those who matter. They are then able to move forward in their relationship together.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024Such a great story. Smitty and Bryson each have pasts and baggage that requires work to tackle, but in the end they get the HEA they deserve.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2024The story in the beginning was great where they were playing hockey against each other. The middle was too long. I thought maybe there was gonna be more drama between Jake and Smitty and maybe find out that his dad was seeing Smitty. The end was great knowing that they both found each other and got married, but it should’ve been in the book as far as letting us know about the wedding.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2024I adored Smitty! He was funny, cheeky and determined to get Bryson. Bryson, was surprisingly deep. On the surface, he seemed strailaced, devoted dad but he had a complex past which made him that way. Lucky for him, het meets Smitty who gets him to open up and have a little fun.
There is a momentary hiccup where Bryson wants to martyr his happiness for his son's career, but is set straight (could not resist lol), and they get their HEA, complete with epilogue.
Another excellent glimpse of Ellwood, past characters. Looking forward to more from Ms Hayes!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2024This whole series by Lane Hayes is so good. Love stories set in a sweet little town are the best but each one has been so much more. Thin Ice is Bryson who on the outside is Mr Perfect but finally let’s go with the irrepressible Smitty, swoon! Their one night stand to friend to lovers was fun and sexy. I honestly laughed out loud a few times and teared up a little too. So fun to see previous couples as well. Do your self a favor read this series!

Claudia

Totally loved this story especially Bry and Smitty they had a great connection which led to great banter and epic sex. They balanced each other out with Bry trying to be serious and Smitty being a goofball and not accepting any knock backs. Really enjoyed this and can’t wait until the next book is out.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

**3.5 Stars**
Another sweet read from the Elmwood Stories, I just wish the MCs didn't have sex so quickly and so often. *sigh*
● Contemporary
● Sports/Hockey
● Fast easy read
● Small town
● In the closet/coming out
● Some really sweet moments
● Some heartbreaking moments
● Loved the MCs
● Hockey related but a non-fan won't get lost
● A bit too much sex (on and off page)
● Can be a stand alone I think but characters from previous books play a small part

4.0 out of 5 stars A great series
I loved this story of Boring bryant and Smitty. Hot dad vibes and a closered hockey player made for lots of sneaking around. These two just hit it off and couldn't help themselves.
