Embracing the Now: Finding Peace and Happiness in What Is Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 184 ratings

The Now--this moment--is the true source of happiness and peace and the key to living a fulfilled and meaningful life. Embracing the Now is a collection of short essays about the Now that can serve as daily reminders of the deepest truths. Full of clear insight and wisdom, it explains how the mind keeps us out of the Now, how to move into the Now and stay there, and what living from the Now is like. It also explains how to overcome stumbling blocks to being in the moment, such as fears, doubts, judgments, misunderstandings, distrust of life, desires, and other conditioned ideas responsible for human suffering.

From Embracing the Now: "By becoming aware of what else is showing up in life in this moment besides thoughts, you can begin to really live in this moment and respond to it naturally, uncluttered by your mental commentary. You are in the moment but without the ego's influence on it. Spiritual freedom is when the voice of the ego no longer dominates and colors the landscape of life. Rather, it is one small aspect of it--one other thing that comes and goes in this landscape. This voice becomes impersonal--something in the landscape that has no more personal relevance than the bird's song or the temperature of the room. It's experienced, but not experienced as 'you.' Then it's possible to experience the Experiencer--the true Self that is behind all life and behind your life. This Experiencer is in love with life, and when you let it live you, you are in love with life, and your actions and words express that. Freedom from the ego brings a relaxation into the true Self and the possibility of being that in the world instead of the ego."

"Embracing the Now is startlingly clear. On the mainstream nondual spirituality front, Gina Lake is a contender for top author/top teacher honors, along with Eckhart Tolle. Both she and this book have what it takes." -Jerry Katz, author of One: Essential Writings on Nonduality

Review

"Embracing the Now is startlingly clear. On the mainstream nondual spirituality front, Gina Lake is a contender for top author/top teacher honors, along with Eckhart Tolle. Both she and this book have what it takes." -Jerry Katz, author of One: Essential Writings on Nonduality

"This book from Gina Lake is a collection of essays packed with practical advice about how to find happiness by living in the now....Gina understands the ego's nature very thoroughly and examines it in many different ways in these essays....she leads the reader into analyzing it, exposing its many pretenses, and then shredding it....Gina's purpose in these essays is to help move her readers beyond the pain that is cause by the ego. To do that, she points to another voice, one more subtle and quiet, one that sometimes requires spiritual sensitivity training to hear: the voice of essence. Essence--also known as Awareness, Being, Self, etc.--is who you really are. As Gina says, `You know essence when you experience it, just as you know the ego when you experience it. They feel very different and are very distinct.'....Gina offers guidance on developing sensitivity to it, such as by meditation and by the simple but powerful act of noticing. By various means, its presence gradually becomes obvious, so much so that it can actually be felt, and it becomes an anchor for living in the now. Gina's writings have an especially notable characteristic. When she discusses the nature of essence and how to live from its perspective, her words take on a special life and energy. There is a feel of essence speaking through her. In this set of essays, that voice has come to the fore, speaking ever more strongly and with the authority of understanding. And that may be an understatement." --Dennis Trunk, Editor, Third Millennium Gateway, September 14, 2008

From the Author

Quotes from "Embracing the Now":

"When you are very present in the moment without giving your full attention to thoughts, as we usually do, you discover that many other things are arising in the moment besides thoughts. The mind discounts these other things as unimportant and uninteresting, so if you keep paying attention to your mind, you never have a real chance to find out about these for yourself. When we finally become disillusioned with the mind's complaints, judgments, poor guidance, and version of reality, which is generally quite negative, we begin to look outside the mind for true happiness and true guidance, which is where it can be found."

"You don't have control over what arises in any moment, but you can control where your attention goes, and that will determine how you experience the moment. Any moment can be an experience of peace and contentment or an experience of upset and dissatisfaction, depending on where you put your attention. If you put it on thoughts and emotions and identify with them, you won't experience peace and contentment, but if you put it on your senses or on what is arising from essence, you will be content and happy. Attention is the secret to happiness!"

I have "studied", if one can all it that, Eckart Tolle's "Now" series. They are all very good.

I stumbled upon "Embracing the Now", and was warmed by what was Gina was saying. She makes at once detailed points, and yet presents the succintly, and then goes back to more generalized points. I felt I got to know this thing called "Ego" much better. By being led how to look at it, I begin to understand why it should be "laughed" at.

This is the first book I have read of Gina's...I shall read many more.

My wife doesn't like reading much, largely because she spends so much time in the car. I would love it if this book were put on a CD (could be more as I get to know her writing).

    Read this book.

A beautiful reminder to stay anchored in the present moment, in order to stay aligned as pure self. It provides guidance on how to expose the ego and choose not to identify with it.

to offer. I find her to be one of the easier to read authors and she presents it in a way that is easy to understand. It is uplifting to read and has down to earth advice on how to be. If you are interested in finding out more about life and a way around the egotistic mind then this book would be of good use for you. First rate.

I have read and done many things in the search for Enlightenment. Some authors speak with clarity, some with authority, some with depth and some manage to point directly to what is always here, always now. Gina Lake writes with all of the above qualities, in a way that leaves nothing untouched. If you found yourself feeling what Awakening is all about, but unable to take the step towards, well, towards Now, this is an excellent bridge, because it speaks in both extraordinary and mundane ways. You will fall in love with the kindness, the graciousness and the acceptance that flow form this book.
For all the seekers, try it! It just might be the last step in suffering and the first step into Being!

Yes, I recomend this book! I have read many books on the subject of this genre, and this is in the top 5 on my list.

There are some thought provoking concepts and ideas that, surprisingly, I found to be origional. If your tired of reading OSHO, or books on the great BUDDA, then please give this a try.

Warning, this is about meditaion, awarness, and enlightenment. So if you are still stuck in the middle ages, gave your life Jesus, or are closed minded, then you REALLY need to read.

Great book to help keeping me motivated as I travel my path. Most of the books I have read by Gina Lake are excellent. I have learned to live in the now but it is still easy to forget during the day and allow myself to wander into the regrets of the past or the worry of what might happen. A book like this helps me to remember to come back to the present more often than had I not continued with my daily reading of inspirational books.

I am very early in the book, so the star rating may change as I finish it, but I wanted to post a preliminary thought. I have read five or so books on mindfulness now, and have been practicing being present and even doing formal meditation for several months. I have felt big mind, and I know there is really something serious here. It is not easy to be an atheist materialist and read some of these books. But Gina's book is the first on the subject where she states utterly quite early in the book, that there is a soul that makes to the body work, and that when the soul leaves the body dies, but the soul still exists. It absolutely is not my intent to start a fight on the subject, but I have to say that I reject that notion utterly. Please don't focus on the thought that I am asserting I am right. What I am asserting is that the assertion makes it rather hard for me to keep forging through the work. I will, and I will update the review when I finish.

Part of my struggle as someone who believes consciousness is an entirely material phenomenon is to find a way to interpret Zen and Buddhist beliefs in a way that is believable to my rational mind. Yes it is much less important to focus on that and it seems irrelevant to a large degree when you are deep in an effective meditation period. So I do try not to let disagreements like this impact the practice, but I do find the bold assertion of the eternal existence of a soul to be fairly off-putting.

Brilliant book clearly illustrating how the mind takes us off into the past and future at the drop of a hat thus undermining the most precious time we have... the present moment! The book explains how we can let go of the thoughts and fears about who we think we are and how we should be living in order to truly see and enjoy each moment as it is, thus allowing us to flow through and learn from all of our experiences in life - even those we feel are bad! Would highly recommend this book for those who, like myself, often struggle to stay outside the confines of the mind and find themselves worrying over all the unimportant things in life... I'm certainly working towards staying present.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gina's Bücher sind die besten ihrer Art!
Reviewed in Germany on April 21, 2014

This book gives a deep insight to how we think about life and our expectations of it. All of our wrong thinking controls he way we are. Gina Lake explains what becomes obvious when we explore how we think. It's taken me 70 years to realise this.thanks Gina.
I recommend this book to Anyone who wants a release from how they think and the
    Unhappiness they cause themselves.
