About the authors
Steven Pajak, a Chicago-based author, crafts stories that explore the depths of horror and the human psyche. With a pen that dances on the edges of darkness, Steven brings to life tales that challenge, terrify, and linger in the minds of readers. Drawing inspiration from the urban tapestry of Chicago, his work merges the pulse of city life with the eerie quiet of the shadows lurking within the darkest corners of our minds. Steven invites you into a world where fear meets courage, and the journey through his imagination proves as haunting as it is unforgettable.
Jay Bower is a horror author living outside St. Louis, MO in the forest of southern Illinois. He spends his time reading, writing, and convincing his wife the dark stories he writes do not involve her.
He's the author of The Dark Sacrifice, the Dead Blood Series, and Hanging Corpses.
R.E. Sargent is the author of three novels, four novelettes, and many short stories in the genres of suspense, supernatural, and horror. He is also an editor and a publisher. He is an active member of the Horror Writers Association, the Alliance of Independent Authors, and the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses. His short story, “Lucy,” was featured in the 2021 Splatterpunk Award–nominated anthology If I Die Before I Wake Volume 3 – Tales of Deadly Women and Retribution.
R.E. lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and their Chocolate Lab. And the rain. Lots and lots of rain. He is thankful that writing is an indoor activity.

Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHow well do you really know your neighbors? These stories will have you questioning every single movement your neighbors make and double checking your doors at night to ensure that they are locked.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis one was a lot of fun, I actually finished it a few weeks ago but haven't had time to jump on here to give a proper review. As with many anthologies some stories hold my attention a bit more than others. All of them are worth reading though a lot of fun, a few stuck with me long term though like There Goes the Neighborhood by Brian Asman. This one was great I loved the premise and would have definitely read a whole book fleshing out the characters in this neighborhood a bit more. John Durgin's Bleeding from the Inside was a lot of fun as well, the build up was great, I couldn't figure out where he was going with this story, but the ending was brutal in the best way. I could go on because after thinking about these stories for a few weeks all of them stuck with me in different ways. Definitely pick this one up!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt's hard to write a review that says it any more clearly than the title of this book. There are 14 wildly different stories, which in itself is scary that there can be that many different tremendously evil kinds of neighbors out there. The twists are plentiful, as as the thrills and chills. And overall I feel much better about my own neighbors after reading this collection!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis wasn't my favorite horror anthology, but it wasn't the worst by far. I think I expected a little more than what I got.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2025Format: KindleThis is one of the best anthologies I've read in a while. Every story, without exception, is well written and entertaining. Incredible tales, not to mention an equally entertaining foreward from Duncan Ralston, all about horrendous neighbors of all kinds. Tons of sub-genres are represented, slasher, serial killer, cosmic, folk, grief, even erotic! There is literally something for everyone. Here's a bit more detail about some of my favorites!
Pine Ridge Homeowners Association by Jay Bower- A scary tale about why HOAs are the absolute worst! A couple move into a new house and notice the neighbors behaving strangely. This one got a little claustrophobic, and I loved it!
Toddler Toy Graveyard by Candace Nola- An intense tale of an absolute bitch of a neighbor that goes from hateful and meddlesome, to downright dangerous. Tension-filled and witchy, I really loved the ending!
Agoraphobia by Mike Salt- A paranoid agoraphobic is convinced he is being watched and messed with in his apartment. Is it all in his head, or is something sinister actually happening? I felt drawn into this character's madness from the start!
Come to the Shed by Nick Roberts- Such an amazing job of building tension until it gets incredibly scary, all leading up to a big reveal and climax. So well written!
Solitary by Megan Stockton- An inmate is convinced that prisoners are able to escape when put into solitary confinement. He makes it so he's sent there to check it out for himself and finds that his new neighbor in the cell next door is very strange. By far the most original and unique of all the stories.
There Goes the Neighborhood by Brian Asman- An absolutely perfectly told story. A unique twist on serial killer tales that was highly entertaining throughout.
R.E. Sargent and Steven Pajak have a tremendous ability to bring together the best authors around for their anthologies, and this anthology does just that. Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2025Format: PaperbackI loved this! Every story included in this anthology will creep you out and have you side eyeing your neighbors!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseImagine living in a neighborhood where you are the only person that’s not a killer, or maybe your lifelong bestie is obsessed with you, or perhaps your kid and his buddy are killers, or even your neighboring cellmate in prison is out of this world – that’s what you get and more in My Evil Fµcking Neighbor. The guys at Sinister Smile Press put together a collection of the most awful people to ever move in into your hood.
These twisted tales are provided by some of the biggest names in indie horror, Jay Bower, M J Mars, Candace Nola, Gage Greenwood, Nick Roberts, John Durgin, and Megan Stockton, and many more.
So grab this book, shut your blinds and treat yourself to some truly disturbing stories. You never know what that guy across the street really does behind closed doors.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025Format: KindleThis book is great. I thoroughly enjoyed all the stories. It is a group of very talented authors. These stories may come to mind next time you see your friendly or not so friendly neighbors.
