★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "THE EXORCIST'S HOUSE has some of my most favorite horror-related things: possession, exorcisms not sanctioned by the Catholic Church, a haunted house, the fresh start/new beginning trope and of course the family dog who is the bestest boy when it comes to protecting his family... The last 20% of the story ran me through the wringer: fear, relief, anger, surprise, bittersweet, TERROR - heck I even found religion myself! It was so well written, the story was crafted so well that even knowing the ending, I will absolutely reread this one again...just for the thrills and chills. This kind of writing and story crafting is addicting."—The Nerdy Narrative
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "The character building stands out for me in this one. You will feel for the characters. The writer allows the characters to tell the story through their dialogue, and that is always a plus for me. Even though there are plenty of jaw-dropping moments, and a lot of tension build-up as you wait for a wild jump scare, there is just something warming and inviting that places you in the story among the family members. It's a fun read. Overall, very fun. This is a story where the path, the journey stands out the most. The ending has a twist to it, but it's the journey that shines the most."—The World According to J

- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2025It's never really about the story itself but more about how the story is told. I'm happy to say that this particular story was told pretty darn well. It had all the right ingredients: skeptical unsuspecting people, ghosts, demons and exorcists....all the good stuff. The pace of the action and supernatural happenings was good, no real dead spots. There was no complicated lore to keep track of making the story easy to read and digest. Overall definitely worth the price of admission.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2023When it comes to horror, the possession horror trope is what will unnerve me each time. While there are good horror books involving the dark twisted nature of humans, we know all humans (despite their perversity) have shared weaknesses. Even when overpowered by another human, there is an understanding that the victim could gain an upper hand and triumph.
Being possessed or terrorized by evil spirits is probably one of the most frightening things that could happen to a person. The sense of being powerless with no universally established way to defend oneself is truly horrifying.
When it comes to possession, demonic presences, evil spirits, and spiritual attacks, humans are left helpless and floundering. It is an uncharted territory steeped in combat through folk medicine and culture superstition.
That said, The Exorcist’s House by Nick Roberts had very creepy elements.
A family moves to a fixer-upper that use to be…you guessed it; owned by an exorcist.
Nick creates a personable family dynamic that adds a layer to the immersion which seems to be missing from a lot of other horror books. I cared about the fates of the characters and enjoyed the witty personality of the MMC. As the book unfolds, the past and present interweave as the family tries to survive. Leaving the house is not an option, because evil still follows those it affects. The evil is not tied to a location by mere brick and mortar. It imprints itself onto its victims.
Great pacing, and the horror is portrayed in a tasteful way. Nick does not rely on overtly graphic gore and triggers. Overall, a great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2024I went into this expecting to like it, but I ended up absolutely loving everything about this book! This was such a good listen from the story to the narrator. The pacing was almost perfect, and the build-up and tension were so well done. The characters were all likeable, though Buck was clearly the best of the whole book. My hat is off to the author because this is one of the few horror books that actually made me feel uncomfortable (in the good way). While I was not terrified, there were some terrifying things in this book. The ending was absolute perfection, and I could have lived with that being it for the story. However, I am very eager to read book two. I definitely recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2022What are you looking for when you read a novel with the title The Exorcist’s House? Well your hoping for an engrossing story. Hopefully it will be scary . If you’re lucky it will have an unsettling effect evoking the eerie and uncanny. If you’re real lucky, the book will be unpretentious, intelligent and have a good prose style. I might as well admit I have Robert Aickman and Susan Hill on my mind and with the exception of prose style , F. G. Cottam.
Well how does The Excorcist’s House measure up? It’s engrossing. I read it quickly and actually wanted to know what would happen next. It’s not very scary. It has its moments but it’s a little to consumed by visceral grossness which has a role but will never give you that deep down feeling of eeriness that suggests there is a world that can’t be but is.The book is unpretentious which is a relief . (Recently I read Devil House - not actually a book of supernatural horror - and it positively drowns in pretension). The prose style here is weak. The author is obviously talented. He can do something that many better prose stylists couldn’t do if their lives depended on it, tell a story. But that’s no excuse. He should read a few well written books and try to pick up his game. On the intelligence scale, the book does suffer from one of the classic cliches of supernatural fiction . The people experience inexplicable things and keep on insisting that this can’t be happening because thats not rational! So instead of extricating themselves from danger, they get to the point where they’re lucky to live.Supernatural fiction seems unduly populated by people who seem to be hoping to receive the Humanist of the Year award. It’s amusing because the peasants in old Dracula movies behave more logically. They seem to recognize that if a Vampire has bitten you, you’ve been bitten. They don’t spend time pondering the existence of vampires.
The novel is very influenced by a group of 60s -80s supernatural - horror films. The influence of The Exorcist is omnipresent. The ending is a virtual homage to Rosemary’s Baby and The Omen. You also have a movie I suspect most people have forgotten, The Sentinel, with is gateway to Hell and references to Milton’s work( treated as it were scripture). On top of that even Fright Night pops up! Fright Night has Roddy McDowell as a would be vampire hunter who is initially ineffective because he doesn’t believe! In The Exorcist’s House you have to believe to fight demons from Hell. The question is , why? If you’re battling demons from Hell and there are effective tools for doing so, what is the relevance of your subjective state? There is a rule based order here. Satan can wreak havoc on earth but he can never really win.He is in a Sisyphusian position and that probably puts him in a perpetually bad mood. The novel fudges this somewhat interesting point.Apparently anyone can be an exorcist as long as they believe ( believe in what?) and follow certain rituals. Some reviews suggest this book is very Christian. I don’t know about that. If so it’s a kind on new agey mega church Christianity where now and again you have to drag out the old rituals. The Exorcist , for what it’s worth, is much more Orthodox.
Well it’s pretty good fun when all is said and done.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2024I have no idea why but this took me a lot longer for me to read through. Not that it was boring by any means. I thought it was pretty decent being that it has a lot of expectations as a horror book.
I found it interesting that we get the events of what happens to Merle and when the guys are doing the repairs to the house peior to the main family moving in. I thought it was great to have that backstory to gear us up for whats to come. I was honestly expecting the cliché of one of the parents being seen as “crazy” for believing that their house is being controlled by a demon. There was none of that. I was also surprised that Luke wasn’t as much of a sketchy character. I think the ending was cool cause it was just a nod saying “this isn’t over”.
Overall, I’d give this a 4.5/5. The reason being that it’s not a 5 is because it took me long to finish this and usually, I give 5 stars if not only am I invested in the story but it has me thinking about it later. It’s an easy read to pick up where you left off for sure and I recommend it if someone were to want to read a horror book.

5.0 out of 5 stars the ending was creepy
Daniel Hill is a psychologist who buys a farmhouse in 1994, West Virginia. The house has its own secrets. Things began to change unexpectedly when he moves in with his wife and daughter. The secrets lies in the basement. The book is creepy and infused with mythology. There is an ancient tale about Lucifer. The house is possessed by the soul of a devil of prince of hell. The old man who says has committed suicide meets Daniel in the basement. And tells him everything. Should he believe him? There is a door to the hidden room. And the house had put everyone’s life at stake. Will the Hill family able to get rid of the evil power hovering over them?

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice, out of the box horror!
I really really liked this book from start to finish. The authors writing style is great and I immediately was into the story.
Also the characterisation of the protagonists is beautifully done, very authentic and likeable.
The horror itself was sometimes subtle, and other times over the top but always in the right amount were it was still scary and not too much.
Also, if you're a fan of the classic "the exorcist" you might find a little Easter egg in here :)
Overall a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed ! It reminded me of a classic 90s horror movie, in all the good ways.

Good tension, good characters mostly and kept me hooked. Could have been slightly longer to expand on ideas more but overall a good thrilling read
