Flat Surf (A Frank Pounds novel) Kindle Edition
California's Orange County is famous for television shows of the rich and famous, the rich and disturbed, and neither. Big surf to flat surf, Orange County isn't what you see on TV.
A headless body turns up on a beach.
Former sheriff's detective Frank Pounds is dragged from medical retirement because he may know the identity of the body.
Dressed in an irreverent t-shirt, a pair of board shorts, and rainbow-painted huaraches showing off his pink toenails, he stands over a familiar body with a distinctive tattoo.
As he glares up the beach to the pier lined with camera vultures with long lenses, it turns personal.

About the author

Bestselling, award-winning author, Baer Charlton holds a degree in Social-Anthropology from the University of California at Irvine. His many interests have led him around the world in search of the different and unique.
As an internationally recognized photojournalist, he tracked mountain gorillas, was a podium for a Barbary Ape, communicated in sign language with an Orangutan named Boolon, kissed a kangaroo, and many other wild experiences in between--or he was just monkeying around.
There are no more complex and wonderful stories than ones coming from human experience. Mr. Charlton's stories are all driven by the characters you come to think of as friends, if not family.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2021I knew nothing about surfing, and wondered if id like this book. But Baer Charlton is a master at character development, and Frank Pounds is a very complex individual, whom you really get to like. He is an ex-cop with so many problems, yet he has all these troubled people who seem to be attracted to him. He treats them all like a big family of misfits, and he helps them all. Complex characters, complex plot, and pure entertainment!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2023Having lived in LA it makes you feel like you have gone home.
The people are real and you can see the interaction and how knowledgeable he was in building them.
Can't wait for next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2024I felt like I was back in Orange County. Baer Charlton sets the scene, fills it with a host of quirky characters and delivers a plot packed with action, pathos, and unexpected warmth. Definitely kept me reading. Frank Pounds and his team of misfits all lead fascinating lives while trying to cope with an outside world they barely fit in. Frank, tough as a bagful of nails on the outside, has a soft little underbelly and an unexpected ability to help them find their way while keeping himself mostly in one piece. Unforgettable.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2022If you’ve ever surfed you’ll love the book. I’ve never surfed but this book pulled me in with the retired cop and his “consulting gig” on a murder investigation. Frank can’t rest until he finds who killed his friends. A few twists and turns I didn’t expect.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2020Very interesting mystery. Not for the faint of heart, there is lots of violence. Plenty of examples of families you make your self because most of the characters in this story are not your run of the mill Tom, Dick or Harry. All though they may have started out that way. I hope there is a sequel.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2021That I couldn't finish it. I gave up about 1/3 of the way through. The characters were very poorly sketched out. There was a lot of back and forth between them that was supposed to be amusing, but you didn't know enough about them for it even to be meaningful. I saw no particular reason to care about the murders. I really struggled to get interested in it because I'm always on the lookout for new authors, but this one I won't finish and can't recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2021The two detectives couldn't be more different. Mickey is a younger man with style and flair. He's like family to Frank, a tore up character pulled from retirement. They team up to solve a murder mystery. I guess you never know what lies under the ocean surface. It takes a village of Baer's lovable smart alecks to learn the deadly secret.
I learned a little about the Orange coast along the way.
I hope there's more Frank and Mickey to come.
