The Face You Wear: A Psychological Horror Novel Kindle Edition

3.4 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

An unknown threat is creeping its way into Jana’s residence in this psychological horror novel.

Jana overcame a bleak, poverty-stricken childhood to achieve her version of the American dream. She has her own home, a successful career, and a new husband who offers everything she hoped for in a normal life.

Her tight grasp on stability however begins to slip with disturbing dreams about her husband Michael. A figure in the bedroom doorway watching her sleep, night-time conversations Michael claims never happened, someone lying beside her at night when Michael later says he wasn't there.

Old anxieties and paranoia begin to surface as Jana becomes increasingly desperate to discover if the true threat is her mind, her husband…or something darker.

The Face You Wear is perfect for readers who love stories of suspense, horror, mystery, and domestic thrillers.

Faith Pierce comes out swinging with her first novel! This is an evil, nightmare inducing, horror fest of a novel which you most certainly read at night! Especially if you share your bed with a loved one! Multiple times I had literal goose bumps and actual shivers down my spine! Never have I been so unnerved when reading a book and the ending...shook me to my very core. Read this with the lights on."—Emerald Reviews

A good psychological horror story begging you to check on your own sanity. A bit longwinded in parts, but an overall good read.

So many possibilities for the ending, all seemingly equally plausible and all terrifying. It was hard to put down! Excellently written.

Some aspects of this story was creepy. I’d say the best thing about this book is the portrayal of Jana and her anxiety because that is truly how someone with anxiety acts. However, I’m not much happy with the ending. It became kind of blah with not much more intensity and we’re left wondering if this was truly just her imagination or something else..I don’t know. I’m torn on this one. I struggled to finish it since it just started to get repetitive with not much more suspense added in..

    Rounding up from 3.5 stars

This is listed as psychological horror, but I'd consider it to be more paranormal, psychological suspense.

It's the age old story where you wonder if the main character is crazy or being gaslighted. It takes a slightly different path by adding in the paranormal element, but I was never fully drawn in to this story. There were no climaxes or shocking scenarios. The characters just fell flat for me.

Thank you to Crystal Lake Publishing for this ebook. All opinions expressed are my own.

Like the characters, Jana is almost a textbook. Her anxiety was transmitted to the reader. Given Pierce a lot oof playing mind games.

Like the story, not overall and the end is the weak, don't go in par with the characters.

I received this as an ARC and this is my honest review.

This is psychological horror, so be prepared for Jana to spend most of the book doubting herself. Pierce handles her fears well, and it’s hard to know how reliable Jana is as a narrator.

As a fellow sufferer from anxiety, I thought the author portrayed Jana excellently. She’s controlled, wound tight and intensely private. Given her upbringing, it’s clear to see why Jana tries to keep things so neatly ordered.

I enjoyed watching the development of Michael from laid back and outgoing, to possibly calculated and malevolent. As Jana feels more isolated, unable to communicate with those closest to her for fear of judgement, the qualities that drew her to Michael in the first place suddenly make him a target of suspicion.

My only nitpick is I longed for a more dramatic progression of the story, especially in the third act. The characters seem to reach a certain point in their development and stay there. While I liked Jana and Michael and wished the best for them, it would have been nice to see them go through some higher stakes conflict before the denouement.

Altogether, an enjoyable, well written psychological thriller with some elements of quiet horror.

Thank you to the author and Crystal Lake Publishing for providing me with an ARC. I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Faith Pierce has written a superb psychological horror tale. Dread oozes out of every surface from the first page. The uncanny builds up at a steady pace, with increasingly bizarre happenings, until the story explodes in a finale that will leave you white knuckled and screaming for more.

Jana and Michael are a newly married couple. In many ways, they are the perfect couple. Everything is going great until Jana starts having dreams about Michael. At first, they are so real that she's convinced Michael is doing these things. When he denies them, she begins to struggle dealing with how real they feel, despite his complete denial.

This is not a jumps and scare sort or horror novel, but one that is much deeper. It's the horror of "what if".

Faith Pierce did a great job with this book. I stayed hooked until the very last page. As always, Crysal Lake continues to put out great books by great authors.
