The Face You Wear: A Psychological Horror Novel Kindle Edition
Jana overcame a bleak, poverty-stricken childhood to achieve her version of the American dream. She has her own home, a successful career, and a new husband who offers everything she hoped for in a normal life.
Her tight grasp on stability however begins to slip with disturbing dreams about her husband Michael. A figure in the bedroom doorway watching her sleep, night-time conversations Michael claims never happened, someone lying beside her at night when Michael later says he wasn't there.
Old anxieties and paranoia begin to surface as Jana becomes increasingly desperate to discover if the true threat is her mind, her husband…or something darker.
The Face You Wear is perfect for readers who love stories of suspense, horror, mystery, and domestic thrillers.

Review
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Faith Pierce comes out swinging with her first novel! This is an evil, nightmare inducing, horror fest of a novel which you most certainly read at night! Especially if you share your bed with a loved one! Multiple times I had literal goose bumps and actual shivers down my spine! Never have I been so unnerved when reading a book and the ending...shook me to my very core. Read this with the lights on."—Emerald Reviews

About the authors
Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2025A good psychological horror story begging you to check on your own sanity. A bit longwinded in parts, but an overall good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2024So many possibilities for the ending, all seemingly equally plausible and all terrifying. It was hard to put down! Excellently written.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2022Some aspects of this story was creepy. I’d say the best thing about this book is the portrayal of Jana and her anxiety because that is truly how someone with anxiety acts. However, I’m not much happy with the ending. It became kind of blah with not much more intensity and we’re left wondering if this was truly just her imagination or something else..I don’t know. I’m torn on this one. I struggled to finish it since it just started to get repetitive with not much more suspense added in..
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2024Rounding up from 3.5 stars
This is listed as psychological horror, but I'd consider it to be more paranormal, psychological suspense.
It's the age old story where you wonder if the main character is crazy or being gaslighted. It takes a slightly different path by adding in the paranormal element, but I was never fully drawn in to this story. There were no climaxes or shocking scenarios. The characters just fell flat for me.
Thank you to Crystal Lake Publishing for this ebook. All opinions expressed are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2024Like the characters, Jana is almost a textbook. Her anxiety was transmitted to the reader. Given Pierce a lot oof playing mind games.
Like the story, not overall and the end is the weak, don't go in par with the characters.
I received this as an ARC and this is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2022This is psychological horror, so be prepared for Jana to spend most of the book doubting herself. Pierce handles her fears well, and it’s hard to know how reliable Jana is as a narrator.
As a fellow sufferer from anxiety, I thought the author portrayed Jana excellently. She’s controlled, wound tight and intensely private. Given her upbringing, it’s clear to see why Jana tries to keep things so neatly ordered.
I enjoyed watching the development of Michael from laid back and outgoing, to possibly calculated and malevolent. As Jana feels more isolated, unable to communicate with those closest to her for fear of judgement, the qualities that drew her to Michael in the first place suddenly make him a target of suspicion.
My only nitpick is I longed for a more dramatic progression of the story, especially in the third act. The characters seem to reach a certain point in their development and stay there. While I liked Jana and Michael and wished the best for them, it would have been nice to see them go through some higher stakes conflict before the denouement.
Altogether, an enjoyable, well written psychological thriller with some elements of quiet horror.
Thank you to the author and Crystal Lake Publishing for providing me with an ARC. I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2022Faith Pierce has written a superb psychological horror tale. Dread oozes out of every surface from the first page. The uncanny builds up at a steady pace, with increasingly bizarre happenings, until the story explodes in a finale that will leave you white knuckled and screaming for more.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2022Jana and Michael are a newly married couple. In many ways, they are the perfect couple. Everything is going great until Jana starts having dreams about Michael. At first, they are so real that she's convinced Michael is doing these things. When he denies them, she begins to struggle dealing with how real they feel, despite his complete denial.
This is not a jumps and scare sort or horror novel, but one that is much deeper. It's the horror of "what if".
Faith Pierce did a great job with this book. I stayed hooked until the very last page. As always, Crysal Lake continues to put out great books by great authors.
