Fagin's Boy: A Gay M/M Historical Romance (Oliver & Jack Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 87 ratings

In 1846 London, respectable young men do not fall for street thieves. This is the love story of Oliver Twist and the Artful Dodger.

Oliver Twist has one desire: to own a bookshop and live a simple, middle-class life, far away from his workhouse-shadowed past. One thing stands in his way: Jack Dawkins--The Artful Dodger--who's just returned to London and is looking for Fagin’s old gang.

Jack's visits cause Oliver nothing but trouble, but he finds himself drawn, time and again, to their shared past, Jack's unguarded honesty, and those bright, green eyes.

Oliver craves respectability, which he won’t find with a forbidden love. Can Jack convince Oliver that having one doesn't mean losing the other?

A gay, m/m Victorian-era romance with grumpy/sunshine, hurt/comfort, opposites attract, emotional scars, and pure, sweet love. A little sweet, a little steamy, with a guaranteed HEA.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Jackie North has been writing stories since grade school and her dream was to someday leave her corporate day job behind and travel the world. She also wanted to put her English degree to good use and write romance novels, because for years she’s had a never-ending movie of made-up love stories in her head that simply wouldn’t leave her alone.

Luckily, she discovered m/m romance and decided that men falling in love with other men was exactly what she wanted to write about. In this dazzling new world, she turned her grocery-store romance ideas around and is now putting them to paper as fast as her fingers can type. She creates characters who are a bit flawed and broken, who find themselves on the edge of society, and maybe a few who are a little bit lost, but who all deserve a happily ever after. (And she makes sure they get it!)

She likes long walks on the beach, the smell of lavender and rainstorms, and enjoys sleeping in on snowy mornings. She is especially fond of pizza and beer and, when time allows, long road trips with soda fountain drinks and rock and roll music. In her heart, there is peace to be found everywhere, but since in the real world this isn’t always true, Jackie writes for love.

Fagin’s Boy picks up the story of Oliver Twist just after he turns seventeen. As it has been for his entire life, Oliver’s fate is in the hands of others. When his benefactor, Uncle Brownlow, dies, Oliver becomes an apprentice to Mr. McCready, working in his haberdashery. He is reluctantly reunited with Jack Dawkins, the Artful Dodger. When Oliver’s life takes a horrible turn, Jack is the one to rescue him and provide a safe harbor.

The language and cadence of this book is saturated with a beautiful sense of time and place, and I can see, smell and feel this London and these characters. Oliver and Jack are richly, deeply written and the pace of the story is methodical with a perfect rhythm.

Victorian London was a gritty, harsh world for most people living there. As Oliver and Jack navigate both how to survive here and their budding relationship, we are left with much hope and anticipation for the next book. Fagin’s Boy is worth every moment spent reading it and I can’t wait for the next installment of Oliver and Jack’s story.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Plot: Disclaimer: I never read Oliver Twist or know the story, and even though this series is written as a continuation, I didn’t feel too limited following this story. Slow burn romance; POV and mostly inner monologue of 17yr old Oliver as he learns to live in a new type of existence after the death of his Uncle Brownlow while waiting and dreaming of the day he can own a bookshop.
Feels: Be prepared halfway for utter despairing heartbreak (spoiler/trigger at the end of my review for why).
Drama: Noah…he’s that character that you want to kick off the island. I really hope he doesn’t show up again, but not holding my breath heh.
    Heat: 1/5
Characters: Oliver was frustrating in the beginning and I had to keep reminding myself that he’s still a child at 17 with a hard past and childhood trauma and built-up anger needing an outlet… Jack was more of a mystery, but we begin to learn more about what drives him in the second half.
Pacing: Smooth flow, clear and concise descriptions that draws you into a story you can easily picture (this made the triggering scene all the more real)
Length: Long read at 500+ pages; with my needed break, took about 2 weeks to finish
Ending: Continuing series with this one having a “walking off into the sunset” ending. I look forward to continuing their journey to an HEA.
**Spoiler Warning/Trigger: Instances of child abuse and on-page death of a child. I never knew I had a trigger until this and I literally couldn’t look at this book for almost a week that I spent re-reading anything with super HEAs that included children.

We had left them hanging listless in the nineteenth century just because Mr. Dickens felt done with them. But now, Oliver and Jack are returned to adventurous life, with the added warmth of loving romance between them. Their lot in life makes it precarious, but they’re facing it together. We are sure to be engaged and entertained as the story unfolds. This work is a loving tribute one author to another through time and space. We are blessed to receive it.

This author has the style of Charles Dickens with a wonderful story and characters of Oliver and the artful dodger. I enjoyed this so much. I can’t wait to to read the rest of the series.

I have never read Oliver Twist and this work by Jackie North tells why I never have. This book was of a totally different venue for this author. To me it is a depressing book; from Mr. Grimwig to manipulative Cromwell the villians abound in Oliver's life and neither has any remorse for what Oliver is subjected to. A few characters add some hope to his life: Mr. Beauchamp, Parson Greaves and Mr. McCready give Oliver a chance at a better life. The first half or so, to me, protrays Olvier as someone with no backbone, someone who just doesn't stand up for himself. I just wasn't that invested in this story so much. As for Jack Dawkins, The Artful Dodger, here was someone who played against Oliver's venerablilty to the hilt BUT was also attracted to Oliver as Oliver was to him. A curious attraction to say the least. The ending did hold promise for somewhat of a dubious future for the two. This book was an emotional journey for this reader but I'm wary of continuing the trip for future books in this series. I am voluntarily leaving a review for the advanced copy that I received.

What if years after Oliver Twist and the Artful Dodger fell in love? How would their lives be like years from the ending of the novel Oliver Twist?

This and more is the basic premise for Fagin's Boy. It's been ages since I last read Oliver Twist so my remembrance of what happened in that book is fuzzy at best. But what did stick is the writing style and tone of that book and its essence is captured in Fagin's Boy along with the writer's own unique style.

This is a very long book and can be a bit of a heavy read. It's well-written and heavy on the rich historical details that immerses the reader in the atmosphere of Victorian London, the social structures that existed in that time, the restriction of class and the general societal norms and views/attitudes of that period. It gave context toward the reactions and actions that the characters exhibited throughout the book.

Oliver and Jack are imperfect, complex individuals born out of the circumstances and choices they made. Together they fit but not as seamlessly as what one might want. The price that they paid for their love is just too much and I don't know where things will go after that ending.

I'd recommend giving this book a try if you are in the mood for some soul crushing Victorian era story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly well researched mm historical romance

Jackie North had a great idea. What happens after “Oliver Twist” ends. It is very evident that she did an incredible amount of research because this book brims with wonderful facts about what life was like back then for the middle and lower class. Luckily she has not fallen into the trap of so many people who do research and then write fiction, which is to cram ever interesting bit that they dug up into the book and making it either stilted or seeming like a history lecture. There have been so many historical romance books written about the higher class so it’s great to see this set within the world that the vast majority of people live in.
I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read more about the life journey that these two young men are embarking on. This is a long book but it’s absolutely fascinating and I sped through it because I could hardly put it down. I have done some reading of my own about what life was like for people back then but this story makes all of that come alive. The world building (world rebuilding?) and the descriptions of things and people are a big part of why I love this book so much. The push and pull between Oliver and Jack is both heartwarming and heartbreaking and this book actually made me cry at times for them. It does end part way through the story that sounds like it will be more interesting fun based on Jackie North’s description. Can’t wait!

This was unexpectedly a masterclass in writing historical romance. The author has taken quite beautifully from a well loved classic and turned it into something all together very lovely. The writing has exceptional flow and every sentence was like being transported into a charming sort of fiction. Thoroughly enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable, emotional, everything.

I love queer literary retellings, and this one was everything.

As a continuation of Oliver Twist, this is a riches-to-rags, heart-wrenching, wild ride of a book.

There’s fluffy romance, a bit of murder-y violence, character growth, tasteful steaminess, questionable moralities… Every emotion is covered. I felt everything so deeply when I read this book.

The characters are flawed, lost, and the leads are extraordinarily loveable.

One of my favourite things in the story was Oliver’s bookshop dream. The way it was written to present so many aspects of his life: his past, present and future; his choices and morals; his priorities… I was in awe.

Jack has quickly become the light of my literary life. I highlighted so many of his quotes. He wasn’t morally sound, by any means, but he really loves Oliver. And the way he loves Oliver is so pure.

    I truly adored this book.
