Fairy on the Rocks: An Urban Fantasy Adventure (Fairy Files Book 1) Kindle Edition
This kitsch-loving bar owner will have to leave behind everything she’s ever known.
Chloe Frangipani doesn’t believe in fairy tales or happily ever afters, but she’s darn near perfectly happy as the owner and manager of Ephemeral, a martini bar that offers good drinks, great music, and a wait staff that’s not only easy on the eyes but ready and willing to serve up their patrons' fantasies.
When her friend and mentor, Buddy, goes missing, Chloe is determined to find him and bring him home safe to his pregnant wife. She enlists the help of a private investigator, Frost, a werewolf as cocky as he is handsome. Together, they search for Buddy in the human world and in Rubalia, a fairy land ruled by Chloe's grandfathers, the faun and fairy kings.
Chloe will have to learn to play the part of princess, make nice with the wolfy detective, and stay alive long enough to bring Buddy home. In Rubalia, Chloe discovers a world of violence that could endanger the fae in both realms. To save Buddy and the fae, Chloe will have to make sacrifices and take risks that could endanger the people she loves and her own happiness.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was excellent and a fun read. Interesting plot that moved along well. The characters were interesting and the main character Chloe was likeable, you wanted her to meet the challenges in her life and allow Frost, the hot werewolf to love her. Highly recommend - can't wait for the next in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2020Format: KindleVerified Purchasewhy do authors burden plots about women with relationship/romantic drivel? I'm only 1/3 way thru but might have to stop reading if this devolves any further into a romance book. Tell me upfront if that's the focus & i can simply avoid the book. Don't tell me and i'm gonna leave a bad review. It's very disappointing because i like the premise here, and the plot line is interesting, and i like the female lead in general, but i simply can't stomach the irrelevant focus on romantic relationships, especially from a character who swears she doesn't want them. SO disappointing

- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseChloe, Frost, Mercury, Vin, Pierson, and Knuffington are characters you want to go on a journey with. I'm looking forward to Book 2 to see where Chloe and her mother's relationship (if u want 2 call it that) goes.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI liked the different characters, each with their own problems to overcome yet they joined together to help one another. Many issues cause the problems and not all are happily resolved.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2016Format: KindleI'm beginning to want a 10 star scale, just to be able to differentiate great books more. Is this one of my absolute favorites of all time? No. But it's far and away better than the books I rate a 3. I found it solidly written, with interesting characters I could relate to. I was _immensely_ impressed by a few aspects that are highly unusual in books of all caliber and kind. One, family matters. They affect characters' decisions in the present, and they've helped make characters who they are today. Two, this is a relatively diverse world. There's people of different skin colors, people of different types and professions, and even people of different ages. Though the magical references are all European, it's a whole lot more than just the typical dwarves, elves, and fairies. I can't tell you how many books in every genre I've read or previewed that are boringly uniform and hard to relate to. I've been trying very hard to find books like this and failing. I hope future books in the series have even more diversity.
Some elements are predictable, and it's more fun than deep. But all the action has emotional weight and meaning. The characters are relatable and nicely flawed, even if their physical descriptions make them sound like different types of fashion models. Through out the whole book (and the next one in the series), I wanted badly for the protagonists to succeed. The writer made me care about them, and deeply care about the problems they want to solve.
In short, while this isn't the most perfect book ever written, it's absolutely perfect for when you have time to curl up and enjoy some action, adventure, and mystery with a whole lot of magic thrown in.

Was terribly annoyed at the Saving her friends complex she seemed to have. But all in all great read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Plot has potential
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe plot really had potential to become a great story but there were quite a few things I just couldn’t overlook. Chloe is an interesting main character who doesn’t have a lot of friends to begin with. But that kind of drastically changes while the story is progressing. Suddenly she cares about all the people she basically just met but still seems quite blind to the fact that Frost really likes her. Then she has a moment where she just had to play the hero and try to save her friends without really having a clue what’s going on. She knows nothing about their world but still thinks she knows it better than everybody else. Nevertheless I really liked how the whole group came together and worked as a team to help each other out. The plot line was interesting although I still have quite a lot of questions remaining which I hope will be answered in the next part.
Besides that the book could have used a bit of formatting as there were a lot of time jumps that happened just between two paragraphs.
