I was completely engrossed in the story... The ending was bittersweet, I didn't get the resolution that I expected, and that is okay because this book is the first part of a trilogy.
I enjoyed the author's storytelling because it was riveting, but the ending left me stunned. Emma's last sight out of the plane is what I remember the most and it was not a good feeling for me. I can't wait for the follow up book because my emotions are dangling on a cliff. --Paranormal Romance Guild
Night Owl Reviews Top PickThis book had all of the key elements to keepme turning the pages in anticipation. It has adventure, horror, suspense, joy, love, passion and questions that build upon each otheruntil the end. I was sucked into the world and found myself rooting for the heroin. So many of the characters were like friends, that I feltbereft when the story ended. --Night Owl Reviews

- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2014SYNOPSIS | It’s been about a year since the mists swept over the world, rising out of cracks deep from the earth. The mists are attracted to certain types of metals and eat away at people and buildings; the world has been decimated. The ragged few survivors have been gifted psychic powers without knowledge or insight on how to control them or what all might manifest.
Emma, a well-known artist Before, has gathered up eight children under her wing, protecting and caring for them. One of them is her own – 5-year-old Mandy. It’s been rough, though, and she can’t keep it up alone much longer. Out there roaming around what used to be France are large bands of cannibals, rapists, slavers, and other humans with dark intentions. There are also good people. You just never know who you’re going to find.
Arthur was well-accomplished Before: a classified military scientist researcher and supposedly brilliant. He’s now the leader of a large camp of men of varying specialties. He’s trying to rebuild the world and he’s a little off his rocker. Fierce, loyal, determined, ambitious, controlling, and jealous, Arthur isn’t exactly a shining example of mankind. He is not, however, a cannibal and he won’t hurt the children.
Can Emma and Arthur each make sacrifices to connect with each other and help each other with their goals? Will Arthur understand when Emma explains that her husband and oldest daughter are still alive in Canada, and she wants to get back to them? Will Emma understand when Arthur explains his own secret?
REVIEW | Fallen explores the grittier side of what could happen in a post-apocalyptic setting. Lives are clearly divided into Before and After, and survivors battle with the guilt as they can’t reconcile the two. If you’re looking for a picture-perfect romance with two adorably perfect main characters, walk away now. This isn’t a YA novel. What you get instead are two adults with massive flaws and faults trying to survive in a world that is literally trying to kill them. As Emma says, this isn’t a time for judging. It’s a time for surviving.
The stories portrayed by Slatton aren’t heart-warming. People are hurt and people die. There is no redemption at the end of the first novel; there is no happy ending. These two people are thrown together in an intense situation and they each are doing their best with what sanity they’ve got left. Neither main character is incredibly lovable. Emma is married to another man whom she knows is alive, yet she is having sexual relations with Arthur. Arthur is a downright controlling and jealous bastard who can be vicious when he so chooses. There isn’t flowery language and poetry going on here.
Despite this, though, the way that Slatton has written the novel sweeps right past my critical-of-romance alarms (you don’t even want to hear me go off on Twilight) and hits the entertainment button.
Note: There aren’t really graphically described sexual scenes such as in a Harlequin book, but the matter is discussed cavalierly and referenced casually. If that’s not your thing, you’re not going to be interested in this book. If you are triggered by rape and violence, please avoid this book.
CONCLUSION | I hesitate to recommend this book to just anyone because it’s not for everyone. However, if you enjoy dark, gritty peeks into possible human nature reactions in apocalyptic settings, you will probably enjoy this novel.
Thank you Traci Slatton.

Because I'm not a huge fan of the post-apocalyptic and/or dystopian genres, I was a bit hesitant to read Fallen. But once I got started there was nothing that could have kept me from finishing this fantastically written story. Packed with danger and excitement, twists and turns, and an amazing love story, Fallen is one of those books that you just have to have!
A strange mist has destroyed most of the earth and has killed millions of people. Those that have survived move from place to place trying to avoid the poisonous gas while scavenging for food, clothing, and shelter. They also try to avoid the hostile bands of rogues and those people who have been driven to madness.
Along the way Emma, and her young daughter Mandy, rescue several children. And though they are doing well enough for themselves, Emma needs to find a "safe" haven for her "family". She needs more than just her to protect all ten of them. So when a group of men ride into the town she is currently in, she singles out the leader and offers up herself in exchange for their safety. She had no way to know that in making this decision, she would face unparalleled danger from Russians and cannibal rogue's and could find, quite possibly the greatest love she has ever known.
Though Arthur is good at protecting the men in his camp and wants to rebuild a better world, will he be able to face the ramifications of what he's done in the past? More importantly, will Emma?
Fallen is an intense and wondrous ride that you won't want to end. Thank goodness book two, Cold Light is already out! Please Traci, write book three quickly!!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2013Great worldbuilding and characters.
But the romance lacked any development. No moments of tenderness, or at least closeness, no situation where we see them acting as a couple. The only time they had together was on their climbing trip and that was more about introspection than connection. They begin as a couple based on interest (hers) and then suddenly appear as a couple based on devotion (his). What happened in between?! When did they grow?! How?! The author didn't offer us anything in this sense. I'm just supposed to buy it?
Someone said something about the sex scenes. What sex scenes?!! Did we read the same book? They go inside his tent and the next day everybody is blushing. That's it. That's all the description we get. And the romance is supposed to be the main element to take us to the next book.
The story was saved by the adventure, which kept me engrossed and entertained.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2016This book surprised and delighted me. I read it because my daughter recommended it. I didn't expect to be so completely captivated by the story of Emma, who is called upon to protect her young daughter as well as a ragtag group of children who have been lost or orphaned as the world seemingly dissolved around them. The horrifying mists, which attack humans and animals in order to extract metals from them, have destroyed most of civilization. The survivors have banded together in separate encampments, some protective and hopeful of rebuilding the world, and others warlike and savage.
The author manages to make this story plausible and holds the reader's attention with her beautiful writing. I look forward to the next two parts of this trilogy.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2014Just wow! I actually got nothing done reading this! I was pleasantly entertained by Ms. Slatton.
Her version of the apocalypse is entertaining and thought provoking. She mixes a little mystery, science, romance to make you wonder where she is going in this scenario. Main character Emma is strong willed and quick thinking, Arthur is your rugged handsome know it all with a secret. A completely engaging cast of characters is also around to keep you entertained. You won't be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Addictive Dystopian Thriller
"Fallen" a fast-paced, intoxicating dystopian thriller begins after a white vapour has swept across the earth scorching everything but plant life containing chlorophyll. Not only have millions died from a mist that seems "to act deliberately with an awareness", but those that haven't been crippled by insanity have been endowed with mysterious psychic gifts. In this frightening apocalyptic world Emma Anderson struggles to survive with her daughter and seven orphaned children.
The story quickly heats up when Emma negotiates a deal with the captivating leader of a group of men for sanctuary in a safe zone. At first he promises "no expectations, no demands, and no commitments" in their bargain, but that quickly changes when both begin to lose their hearts. What Emma doesn't know as she and the children try to rebuild their lives in the camp is that Arthur hides a shocking secret that could shatter their love.
In a landscape scarred by disaster the atmosphere is realistically frightening, sombre and uncertain as survivors struggle to find food and stay away from the white killing vapour and deadly gangs. Imaginatively the author has endowed many of humanity's remnant with physic gifts like Emma who has made friends and a place in the camp with her strange power of healing, young Newt with her predictions and Marco with his ability to interpret dreams. As events progress smoothly in this well-written adventure, encounters with the mist, a cannibalistic red-capped gang and Alexei's raiders, tension and suspense slowly escalates until the shocking cliff-hanger at the end.
Underlying the fabric of a fascinating tale of survival in a hostile landscape is the romance between Arthur and Emma, both who are adroit at keeping secrets. As guardian of eight children who are constantly in danger rationally Emma barters the only thing she has of value which Arthur is quick to accept. As their trysts heat up and clues are revealed about Arthur's past neither wants to confront truths that naturally could damage their ripening relationship. Although the chemistry between Emma and Arthur is electric, in reality their relationship should have quickly deteriorated with his possessiveness, browbeating and jealous personality. In this case the opposite is true because Emma bows to his will and falls head over heels in love with him although exposing her secret could have obviously cooled his ardour.
But although I'm not enthusiastic about this love affair there are other characteristics that I did like about the hero and heroine. Emma is a feisty, cheeky and an intelligent woman who bravely protects the children she loves and through her resourcefulness makes a place for herself in an all- male camp. She's brave and strong but like Arthur highly secretive. Arthur haunted by "quilt, regret and loss" is a clever, cool-headed leader who can be brutal and ruthless. He's determined to be responsible with the power he has and to rebuild society with Emma by his side. Of the antagonists who add intensity and a chill to this story, Alexei the Russian trader is underhanded, vindictive and cruel, only gentle and caring with those he loves while Xavier is condescending and dangerous, willing to barter innocent lives to get what he wants.
"Fallen" first book in the "After" series is a captivating page-turner from beginning to the end. I couldn't put it down and can't wait to read the sequel.
