With the economy such as it is, I rarely buy books as soon as they are released. But I make an exception for the books in this series. I was not disappointed, either. Believable, energetic, interesting characters who make very human choices facing inhumane foes and unbelievable circumstances, once again band together to face challenges with unexpected twists and turns in the plot. The protagonist Emma, forced to once again make extremely difficult choices, chooses a way that is the most difficult for her so that she can help the ones she loves. I love this series and am so excited that it isn't over. I just hope Slatton is writing furiously so her fans won't wait too long for the next book.

    My Thoughts

Throughout this series one steadfast theme has been front and center that there is still hope for the future, this hope is severely tested many times for both the characters and the reader in every book but especially so in this third installment in the trilogy!

Questions have been answered that were previously raised but there are so many answers still uncovered even as we are in the final stretch to see whether Emma chooses her husband and daughters or if her all consuming passion for Arthur will prevail. The enemy of old is stronger than ever, his hatred leads him to brutalize and maim Arthur to the point he is unrecognizable.

Emma finds herself at an impasse, she is strongly tempted to let her ties go with the band of travelers she has become so close to. However much it pains her to do so she realizes that she has no other choice but to leave her family and do her best to not only save the life of her pregnant friend but she must also do everything in her power to rescue Arthur for the sake of mankind’s future as he is the only weapon they have that can counteract and control the deadly mists.

The strenuous physical journey that Emma undertakes is nothing in comparison to the difficult mental hardships that she must also face once her goal of finding and securing Arthur is met. The man she had fallen in love with was a mere shell, mutilated, scarred and maimed almost beyond saving. The reality of what her choice may cost her if Arthur dies nearly puts Emma into shock at times, by a miracle of fate she finally finds a way to heal the wounds and Arthur is once again physically whole. His mental state however remains that of a simple and overlarge child, Emma’s despair of ever having Arthur whole mentally as well as physically leads her to make a decision she regrets and one that ultimately almost costs her to lose him forever.

As things come to their conclusion we find Arthur and Emma together with all they have shared bonding them tighter than ever! By the time the book finished I was at first heartbroken, then angry, then shocked and by the end still feel that there is so much more to be resolved but am still happy for the choice Emma made and that it worked out for her the way it did as had many a moment when not sure it would.

I've been waiting a long time for this sequel, and it did not disappoint! It is a must read if you enjoyed Fallen and Cold Light. And although this series is said to be a trilogy, the ending leaves me wondering (and hoping) that there may be yet another book?

This is the best apocalypse fiction I have read in a long time I fell in love with the characters, and the story plot is very realistic. I have finished the first 3 books, and have just bought the next one. Great read.

I've been following Slatton's After Series now since the first book was released and, frankly, surprised the heck out of me. The first book in the trilogy, Fallen, had me frantically turning pages and thoroughly enjoying a setting that was not only post-apocalyptic, but also more adult in nature. When Fallen was provided to me, I had spent so much time reading Young Adult fiction that I had been craving something more mature and Slatton provided that in spades. Far Shore, the third installment of the trilogy, was no different. Slatton thrusts her readers back into the bleak world and brings all of the major players together in a way that had me wondering just how it would play out.

That being said, there were some things about Far Shore that just didn't work well for me. In some ways, I could sense there was a bit of a struggle trying to reconcile relationships that were at odds through the first two books in the series. The interaction between Emma and Arthur (and, frankly Emma and two other males in her small circle) seemed strained and awkward at times. Add into the mix the ultimate breaking point for Arthur and the result was a story that was a bit more fragmented and unsettled than I had been used to from Slatton.

That's not to say that I didn't enjoy the story. If nothing else, Slatton writes in such an addictive way that I could swear there was some sort of addictive substance between the pages. I know when I pick up one of her books I am not going to want to put it down until I finish it, and Far Shore was no different. However, maybe things would have been different if she hadn't been roped into something that was labeled, from the start, a "trilogy." I could see how there was more much to be explored, but time and space just wouldn't allow for it.

Still, this is a worthy trilogy and an exceptionally good entry way point into more hardcore science fiction, for those who are looking to expand their horizons a bit. There's a little bit of everything in it - romance, horror, mystery, science-fiction goodness ... it's all there and interesting enough to keep the reader totally immersed.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Intoxicating Dystopian Romance!
Reviewed in Canada on September 12, 2015
"Far Shore" the third book in the intoxicating "After series" begins after Emma and Haywood return home having saved their daughter Beth from the clutches of Alexei and his raiders. As the tension mounts between Emma and her husband she's asked to return to the Outpost City to save Jeannie and her baby as well as to help plan the rescue of Arthur from the raider camp. Angry, Haywood gives her an ultimatum. But, devoted to Arthur and loyal to her friends the choice is simple and she packs to leave.

Emma realizes that Arthur battered and broken under torture may not survive if she doesn't accept the bargain Alexei, a powerful psychic proposes in her recurring nightmares. Not only does she love Arthur but she believes he can destroy the mists that are evolving and becoming more aggressive. With Nowokocha, Theo and Donny, she sets a plan in motion to save him and to escape from Alexei. But when captured she discovers only the dying husk of her lover. Determined to heal him, Emma's power and resolve will be tested especially when she learns that it may take more than Arthur's skill to save the world.

Traci Slatton has created an innovative and imaginative apocalyptic world where humanity stands at a crossroads, where extinction is possible as the mists evolve , becoming more virulent and destructive. Although the mood of the story continues to be dark and chilling, there are moments of humor in the banter between Alexei and Emma as he coerces her into healing him, and Arthur's lack of bowel restraint on the lawn of the house where they're staying. But like all the "After" novels the action never stops as the intensity and suspense builds in Emma's encounters with the raiders, the mist, bears and wraiths.

Her bond with Arthur continues to defy "logic and obligation" as Emma struggles to overcome the sudden disappearance of her gift , only to have it suddenly flare into something greater. In her loneliness and despair she makes an error in judgement that comes back to haunt her, almost costing her Arthur's love. Yet through all their adversities and challenges their love grows stronger, even strengthening Arthur's hold on the mists.

Part of what makes this plot so gripping is the characters who bring power, and depth to the drama as events unfold; like Emma's unreasonable, emotional outbursts as well as her strength-of-will and impulsiveness that underlie her "talent for mishap". As Arthur recovers his health his overbearing, arrogant nature resurfaces as well as his guilt, despair and rage in his inability to control the mists he created to end all wars. Among the unforgettable sub- characters are; Donny the self-disciplined, former police detective who can influence minds; the kind, caring Theo who's like a brother to Emma; the clever, and resourceful pickpocket Gaff; and the unpredictable and formidable Alexei who loves the unattainable.

As the nightmare on earth continues, Emma and Arthur's love is tested in "Far Shore" the captivating third book in a memorable series. I liked it and rate this well-developed story highly.
