Fear of the Deep Kindle Edition
Bailey, a lifeguard with a heavy metal heart and a Jack Daniel's addiction, has long avoided the deep sea since a haunting accident. San Diego's sunny shores provide a façade of normalcy, where her nights are drowned in music and whiskey, and her days are spent keeping a safe distance from the ocean's grasp.
But the sea has a way of claiming what it wants. The discovery of a woman's body, marked by peculiar and familiar bite marks, washes up on her beach, forcing Bailey to confront the fears she's been running from. Deep beneath the waves, something sinister lurks, a nightmare born from genetic engineering gone awry. As Bailey delves deeper into the mystery, she finds herself entangled in a web of horror and science fiction, where sea creatures of the darkest depths become terrifyingly real.
With each tide, the line between reality and nightmare blurs, pulling Bailey into a psychological maelstrom. Her journey is not just a battle against the horrors emerging from the deep but a fight to overcome the demons within herself.
Fear of the Deep is not just a novel—it's a voyage into the heart of terror and the human psyche. It navigates the treacherous waters of horror suspense, sea stories, and genetic engineering science fiction, making it a perfect storm for fans of psychological thrillers and deep-sea adventures.
Are you brave enough to dive into the depths of Fear of the Deep? Hold your breath and plunge into this sea of suspense, where the darkest fears lie waiting beneath the surface.

About the authors
Julie Hiner spent endless hours during her childhood lost in the pages of books. She could tune out anything and immerse herself in the worlds of fictional characters for an entire day. The only thing that took precedence over a book was her Walkman. To this day, Julie is a hardcore 80s rocker at heart. In high school, her favorite classes were science, math and English. During this time, her love for writing surged.
After securing a solid education in computer science at the University of Calgary, Julie spent over a decade working on large scale network systems. On a break between contracts, Julie followed her longing to finish a book she had been writing in bits and pieces. After finishing her non-fictional book portraying her personal story of facing fear and anxiety on a bicycle in the European mountains, she did some deep soul searching. This is when she decided to write a novel.
For a long time, Julie has been fascinated with the complexity of the dark mind of the serial killer and obsessed with trying to understand how murder can occur. Finding inspiration at a talk given by a local homicide detective, Julie surged down her new path to writing a dark, serial killer novel. Two books, including a newsletter exclusive teaser, have been published in her dark crime (80s metal murder) series. Several of her short horror stories have been published in various collections. Her favorite parts of her new found writing process are the detailed research, creating an in-depth character and digging deep into his, her or its mind, and unleashing her inner artist on photos to create the cover and marketing material.
Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.
Welcome to Crystal Lake Publishing—Tales from the Darkest Depths.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2025A one-sitting read for me, and I absolutely loved it. Sea creatures and heavy metal go together like skulls and crossbones. Hiner just outright rocks, and you're gonna have a lot of fun with anything she releases. Highly recommended to all fans of horror and great fiction!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2025Dope little sea monster novella. This was my first work by Hiner and she was an author I was completely unfamiliar with. I’m glad I picked this one up because it was a solid read and will definitely scratch that ocean horror itch.
Fear of the Deep follows self destructive lifeguard, Bailey, as she moves through life. It’s a shorter book so not overly heavy on world building or characterization, but Hiner does an excellent job at making Bailey likable and relatable. She was significantly impacted after seeing the death of a loved one a few years previous. Because of this, she leans on alcohol heavily to aid her trauma. When a woman’s body washes ashore featuring similar markings to the death she witnessed years prior, she pushes for answers.
The pacing is great in this one and I easily blew through it in a few sittings. I love me some deep sea horror and while this one isn’t necessarily about exploring the hadalpalagic zone (probably for the best tbh, as I’m still effed from Cutter’s The Deep), it does feature a fun new friend that emerges from the depths of the Pacific Ocean.
The story never really dwells and Hiner tends to move fairly quickly from scene to scene and then fill in the gaps as she goes. Overall, the story worked for me and I enjoyed reading it. It’s a shorter novel so I think had it been longer and more fleshed out it would’ve only enhanced the book. We only really get the integral plot points and I would’ve loved to read more day to day life with Bailey. I definitely will keep an eye on Hiner’s catalog moving forward and I’d recommend this one to anyone who vibes with sea creature features that are well paced and blunt.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2025Man I truly love a good sea creature story and this delivers. So many deep sea creatures we don't know and this was based off of a mutant anglerfish which in itself is fing weird.
Fast paced, throw in a heavy metal groupie on roller skates and a few kills and you got a story
