The Tragedy of Felix and Jake: A Grumpy Sunshine MM Romance Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 3,601 ratings

A grumpy/sunshine MM romance from New York Times bestselling author, J. Daniels.

They say the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else.
They say the best way to stay sober is to love yourself.

I’m great at making bad decisions.
Addict? Check. Poor impulse control? Check. Obsessed with the guy I’m sponsoring? Check Check Check.
There is no one worse for me to want in my bed than Jake Tully. He’s hot and grumpy and literally a terrible idea. Terrible. Worse, no one has ever made me feel the way he does — valued. But here I am - thinking about him again.
Falling for my sponsor is not my worst idea yet, but it’s damn close.

Felix Fields is everything good. He’s thoughtful and kind. I can’t help but think about every bad thing we could do between these sheets.
But we can’t be together. I’m not willing to risk my recovery for anyone – even if he might be perfect for me.

Finding a love like this is nothing short of a tragedy.

**Author's Note:
This book ends in a Happily Ever After, but getting there isn't easy.

The Queen... has RETURNED
I finally finished these boys! And I have alot to say, so if you like rambling and fangirling... keep reading. Jake & Felix's story is brilliant, sweet, hilarious, a tragedy at times, and most definitely one that will always stay with you. J Daniels may have not been in the book world for a bit, as we all haven't been.... but reading her work again, it's clear she never left. This book was like smelling fresh cookies(or donuts in our sweet Jake & Felix's story) and it was like coming home after a long day(or a long couple of years) and it did NOT disappoint in any way! These boys, this love, this family, it just keeps getting better and better, even when I think we've reached the peak and that makes me so emotional and giddy with excitement! This book had me on the floor snorting, hysterically laughing, crying into a pillow and screaming my excitement like a child. People need to read this book!! On a side note, I have maybe two at-best addiction books I've read, and this... is the best one thus far! I'm not an addict, I can't say I know much about it.... but I am mentally ill, and seeing how these two characters think and feel.... it resonated with me in a way I never expected. When things get hard for us(people who may not have the best coping skills) we go to our vices- (all the vices amazon won't let me write) And seeing that these two characters not only understood that but made THE READER understand that... was everything and then some! Thank you, J for writing something so real, so raw, and something incredibly relatable. Finishing this book made me incredibly happy & sad at the same time because I finished it! And the only comparison I can make to it is telling you: you know when you finish a great show? One that has 15 seasons and it's finally over, you've seen it all, seen these characters who become part of you... see it all come to an end? Then you sit there and immediately hit episode one season one again because it just feels right.... that's what reading this book was like for me. J- you are one of my OG Queens and it is so nice to have you, this world, family, and these characters back! On a complete side note, I now KNOW that Felix is my true spirit animal. Thank you for writing someone as crazy as I feel and giving him the story he needed. Thank you for giving us Jake and his beautiful tragic/temperamental self(add in all his brotherly and the Bama family filled in between) = ❤️. Can we also take a moment to say how hilarious and perfect these chapter titles were?!. Also, have to say this is one of my favorite MM's I have ever read, THIS is exactly the way it should be written❤️ Thank you for sharing this beautiful story with us and we are so glad to have you back here in this book world! Jake & Felix ❤

I have a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad confession to make: The Tragedy of Felix and Jake is my very first read by J. Daniels. I know, I know. I'm a sad excuse for a romance reader. Sigh. That doesn't mean that I'd never heard of her either. I've actually had her Sweet Addiction trilogy since 2014 and 2015 and her Alabama Summer series starter, Where I Belong, since 2017, all four of which have been languishing in my Kindle library. I swear, I have more books than I know what to do with, but all it took was a nudge courtesy of seeing J. Daniels's name and two of her titles in a Facebook group for me to realize that I need to get my act together and actually read her books! Now, I'm making up for so much lost time and catching up on everything I've missed, and I'm starting with her most recent release, which is a standalone that shares loose ties with her Alabama Summer series. And yes, I followed The Tragedy of Felix and Jake with Where I Belong, and I may or may not (TOTALLY DID) have followed that up with the second Alabama Summer book.

So, who are Felix and Jake and why was so tragic about their story? Felix Fields is twenty-three and a tattoo artist; Jake Tully is twenty-eight and a dishonorably discharged Marine now working construction. Both are recovering addicts, and Felix offers himself up as Jake's sponsor when the latter attends an addiction meeting. Felix is friendly AND flirty, and he becomes a source of light and positivity for Jake, especially since he's just re-started his sobriety journey. It goes without saying, however, that becoming romantically involved was a no-no, particularly between a recovering addict and their sponsor, but there's only so much resistance that Felix and Jake can adhere to. Maybe rules were meant to be broken, but there was also a very real risk of their own fragile hearts breaking as well. And what if they were merely exchanging one addiction for another, because the way things are progressing between them, what they're feeling isn't just lust. However, when everything has been said and done, will their love be a tragedy and what will it cost them?

From the moment Felix approached Jake in hopes of being his sponsor, it was clear these two were going to be one hot mess. There are reasons why an intimate relationship between addicts is considered a terrible idea, and goodness, it was obvious that these main characters were going to have more struggles than most other people entering couplehood. But I couldn't help myself--I was cheering Felix and Jake on. I mean, come on, how could I not?! These were two innately good individuals who had their share of mistakes and stumbles, but they kept trying to get back up and do and be better. My emotions were on this roller coaster ride that I hoped would end up with smiling in satisfaction--as is usually case when I get on an actual roller coaster--but by the time I finished, it felt like more. The journey Felix and Jake took on when they decided to become more--both as a couple and as individuals--was by no means easy, but seeing them come out on the other side, battle scars and all, was just so darn gratifying. And yes, my curiosity was piqued when it came to other couples in this book, which is why I am now in the middle of reading the Alabama Summer series, rectifying a years-long oversight on my part. The Tragedy of Felix and Jake was a triumph of a five-starred read.

Not since Aristotle and Dante have I read such a beautiful romance, with two authentic, flawed, fleshed-out characters. The spice level is much higher here, but the scenes of intimacy serve the storyline as the young men, and Jake in particular, find true love in each other. Just a heads-up that the discussions about addiction and drug use could be triggering, as well as a fairly graphic overdose scene.

Have you ever loved characters so much that you just wanted to wrap your arms around them and give them a big hug? Well that is how I feel about Felix and Jake!  Good grief I’m a bawling mess over here having just finished this book.

Felix was chaotic and hilarious at times. I found myself laughing a lot throughout the book even when I was shedding tears.  It was so unexpected but I loved how he just word vomits when he’s nervous.   I also loved how Jake comforted him in his insecurities as well.

These two are perfect for each other and its an emotional roller coaster as they navigate their sobriety with each other, family and friends.  And speaking of friends, Hector and Miguel were phenomenal side characters.

    J. Daniels really got me in the epilogue though. Good grief I cried….. then I wept…. Then the very last line had me sobbing.  I absolutely loved every minute of this read.

    5🌟 & 2🌶

    ᴡᴇ'ʟʟ ʙᴇ ᴏᴋ

Every once in a while I read a book that really digs itself under my skin and deep into my DNA. The Tragedy of Felix and Jake is one of these books. I like the author, J. Daniels, has never been an addict but I have fallen out of love with an addict and been a family member trapped in the push and pull of an addicts journey. I found the story of Felix and Jake to be one of struggle, pain, heartbreak, hope, recovery, and love.

I kinda went into this book completely blind. I mean I could tell from the title it was going to be an MM romance and likely hurt on the way to the end because 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥𝘺 is in the title after all. Then I took the time to read the author’s note, as this was my first book by J. Daniels, and discovered that at the heart of the story there was going to be a struggle with addiction. Don’t worry this is an HEA. I mean I almost DIED on the way there but like - we get there ok.

The story starts off with Jake and we get one heck of an introduction to him and his current state of life. It is hard to put into words what all Jake has gone through. I don’t want to spoil anything but what Jake is dealing with is hard enough without the added struggle of addiction. I immediately wanted life to cut him a break. At the very least he finds a good meeting.

Felix, man I just adored Felix. He was the sunshine to our grumpy Jake. A true easily excited Golden Retriever who just wants everyone to be happy and feel loved. He was an absolutely incredible character and honestly his antics made me laugh out loud more than a handful of times.

While it isn’t ideal for Felix and Jake to give into their desires, it isn’t something that either can fight for very long either. Their chemistry is electric and you can feel it right away. What is also beautiful is their ability to truly love and understand exactly what the other is struggling through, and struggle they do. However - with all of this going on, their relationship was so CUTE. I mean I cannot think of a better of different word for it. It was Cute as pie, or doughnuts. IYKYK. Their flirty messages, glances, the banter…. The SPICE. Felix’s rambles lol.

I also cannot finish this review and not talk about the side characters and the relationship that both Jake and Felix have with them. Miguel and Hector (Jake’s coworkers), are seriously hilarious and had the best of intentions and really brought a lot of light into the story. The evolution of Jake and CJ’s (his brother) relationship was beautiful as well as CJ and Felix’s. I just loved it ok.

*Please check trigger warnings this book does cover some heavy topics*

The tragedy of Felix and Jake has to be one of my favourite reads of this year so far. I laughed, smiled and cried a lot, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

We start the story with Jake breaking his sobriety and having his life thrown into a tailspin. He ends up going with his brother (CJ, is such a caring big brother they do have their negative moments but he loves Jake) and starting the road to sobriety again, which leads him to NA meetings where he meets ray of sunshine Felix.

Felix is one year sober and ends up becoming friends with Jake immediately and his sponsor. Their friendship turns into more and their chemistry is undeniable, but things begin to unravel as both battle their addictions, mental health and family issues.

Jake and Felix’s story was difficult, but so fulfilling. The ending was realistic, and not sugar coated which I loved. This book was raw and there is no better way to describe it.

While this book touched on some deep topics it lacked no humour and was filled with happy moments throughout. It was truly beautiful to read. Even every single side character added so much to the story including Miguel, Hector and Dean all of whom I adored but big soft spot for sweet Miguel.

It’s been a while since I read a book that captivated me so deeply, making me laugh out loud and cry ugly sobs. This emotional roller coaster is beautifully written and immerses you in the story. The audiobook enhances the experience, bringing the characters to life and allowing you to feel their pain, humour, and triumphs.

Felix and Jake are both battling drug addiction, and the book does not shy away from depicting the painful aspects of it. The story begins with Jake relapsing after seven years of sobriety due to a life-altering event. Newly sober for three weeks, he seeks help, attends a support meeting and meets Felix, who has been sober for one year. Felix offers to be Jake’s sponsor, which Jake accepts despite the risks involved. Jake and Felix are instantly attracted to each other. Eventually, they can't resist their feelings and embrace their relationship, leading to a romantic connection.

Felix is absolutely adorable, hilarious and has an endearing personality. He radiates sunshine and positive energy but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a boy with a troubled past who has never truly experienced love. He is insecure and requires a lot of reassurance, but he has a kind soul. His resilience in the face of adversity, energetic nature, vivid daydreams, optimism, and determination to fight for Jake (later in the book) are just a few of the qualities that make him so lovable.

One memorable scene featuring one of his daydreams occurs when Felix eagerly asks a puzzled Jake to confirm his vision of their life plans, leading to a hilariously awkward misunderstanding. Upon realizing his mistake, Felix dashes away like a bat out of hell. That entire episode had me rolling with laughter.

Felix's past with his absentee father was heart-wrenching. The episode in which his father visits had me on the edge of my seat; I found myself biting my nails, and my heart ached for Felix.

As for his relationship with his cat, Bella – I am still smiling.

Jake struggles with addiction and the emotions that come with it. Despite his tough exterior, he is suffering inside. He feels an immediate connection to Felix, enjoys their time together, and feels protective of him. Meanwhile, Jake struggles to cope with the loss of his career, the betrayal of his former partner, and the guilt of letting down his brother and family. He also carries the weight of guilt over what happens to Riley later in the book.

His beautifully written story allows readers to fully experience his emotions—anger, despair, joy, fear, and hope. While Jake acknowledges that he is not perfect, his story helps reveal the complexities of who he is.

Jake's relationship with his brother CJ, who would go to the ends of the earth for him, pulls at the heartstrings. Some of the scenes that had me in tears involved the two of them.

“Do you really think I’d let them get away with that?”
“You’re my brother, Jake. I’ll always protect you.”

Supporting characters like Miguel and Hector add humour and lightness to the story; the conversations between Jake, Miguel and Hector often hilarious.

Jake and Felix will always be two of my favourite characters. Their dialogue and text messages are cute, funny, and snarky. One of my favourite things was Jake taking up baking.

In the end, they achieve their very hard-fought HEA.

The Tragedy of Felix and Jake is a beautifully poignant story of addiction, heartache, grief, love, acceptance, and hope.

    Great book by J. Daniels.
Awesome narration by Iggy Thomas and Tristian Josiah.
