Five years ago, Rosa walked to the pier in the dead of night, looked into the swirling water and jumped. She was a brilliant young Cambridge student who had just lost her father. Her death was tragic, but not unexpected.
But is that what really happened?
Her death was ruled a suicide. But Rosa’s boyfriend, Jar, still can’t let go. He sees Rosa everywhere—a face on the train, a figure on the cliff. He is obsessed with proving that she is still alive. And then he gets an email.
“Find me, Jar. Find me, before they do…”
As Jar digs into the past, he enters a dark underworld where nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted. He is soon thrust into the heart of a larger intrigue that may finally shed some light on Rosa’s death…even as it dangerously threatens his own life.

Under his own name, Jon is the author of The Sleep Room, his first non-fiction book, which will be published in the UK by Little, Brown in April 2025 and in America by Abrams in July 2025.
The Sleep Room is an exposé of Dr William Sargant, one of the most controversial psychiatrists in post-war Britain. A global expert on brainwashing, he was head of the department of psychology at St Thomas' hospital in London from 1948 to 1972 and had close links to British and American intelligence services. It is currently in development as a TV series.
Jon has also written five spy novels, one of which, Dead Spy Running, was optioned by Warner Bros as a feature film.
No Place to Hide, his latest J.S.Monroe thriller, was published by Head of Zeus in 2023. “Clever, convincing and wickedly twisty – highly recommended," according to Mick Herron. A standalone, contemporary thriller set in London, Wiltshire and Cornwall, it's a loose retelling of Dr Faustus. "Compelling, relentless and genuinely frightening," says the actor Simon Russell Beale.
The Man On Hackpen Hill, the third J.S.Monroe thriller to feature DI Silas Hart (head of Swindon CID) and DS Strover, was published in the UK by Head of Zeus in 2021. "Original and brilliantly plotted, with not so much a twist as a seismic shifting of the ground under your feet ... Amazing." – Rosamund Lupton. “Impeccably researched… An unusual mystery told with exceptional skill” – Daily Mail; “A kind of Wiltshire Da Vinci Code, with crop circles, mathematical equations and shadowy figures from Porton Down. A real page turner written with beguiling wit.” – Tom Bradby.
The Other you (2020), the second DI Hart thriller, was published to widespread critical acclaim. "I doubt many other psychological thrillers published this year will be as propulsive and fun" - Daily Telegraph; "A clever mash-up of psychological thriller and police procedural with a dash of sci-fi" - Daily Mail; "You won't be able to turn the pages fast enough" - Heat Magazine; "Brilliantly original and intriguing ... Kept me hooked, enthralled and guessing to the very end" - Peter James.
His second J.S.Monroe thriller, Forget My Name (2018), was the first to feature DI Hart. (It was published as The Last Thing She Remembers in the US.) “An absorbing novel full of unexpected twists, topped by a savage climax” – The Times; “A book that will send thrills down your spine, even on the hottest beach” – Sunday Express.
Find Me (2017), the first J.S.Monroe thriller, has sold more than 150,000 copies and been translated into 14 languages. “Intricately woven and heart-stoppingly believable, this has bestseller written all over it” – Clare Mackintosh; “The most ingenious thriller you will read his year. - Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2020This was a good mystery with plenty of twists and surprises. Initially the story started off slowly moving between Jar in the present time, and diary entries from Rosa in a random date order. We learn from Jar’s chapters that he is still mourning the apparent suicide of his girlfriend Rosa. Jar doesn’t believe that Rosa killed herself through grief at the death of her father.
The story starts out as a ‘is she dead or isn’t she?’, type of tale but gradually morphs into conspiracy tales, the dark web etc until we get about halfway through and then the unreliable narrator ramps up several notches and I found myself doubting every character’s contributions.
This was a good story. A little slow to begin with but the writing kept me reading, pulling me along until the twists and turns in the plot became more interesting as they evolved. The only downside (for me) was that towards the end it took a more gruesome turn with animal cruelty and graphic human torture.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2017"Find Me" is a tense novel that grows ever tauter as one closes in on the climax.
Jar's girlfriend Rosa is assumed to have committed suicide.
She has recently lost her father in death, a man who was involved in political intrigue, yet who was also a loving single father.
His death has affected her deeply, and it is thought that Rosa takes her own life out of grief.
Someone claims to have seen her jump into the Thames where it meets up with the sea, and as sometimes happens with this type of suicide, Rosa's body is never found.
Monroe is adept at nudging his readers to believe that people and situations are pretty much what they seem, then very gradually raising doubts.
He makes this book appear as if the main story line will be not so much "what happened to Rosa?" as "How will we rescue her?"
That assumption may or may not be true...
The first part of "Find Me" dragged somewhat. The chapters alternate between viewpoints of the characters. Jar's narrative is in the third person, Rosa's in the first. Their stories start at a certain point and proceed to the finale. Another character or two comes into play with his/her own narrative as well. This is when the doubts and tension begin to increase.
At a certain point in the book, an even more ominous aspect of the story emerges out of nowhere.
This is where I would have closed the book for good, if I had not agreed to review it.
Graphic torture and animal cruelty raise their ugly heads without any kind of warning, and these are word pictures that cannot be unseen.
At that point I went from being engrossed in an interesting book to hating it.
Not everyone has visceral feelings about these subjects, so I tried to set my personal feelings aside and finished reading the book.
Mr. Monroe has outstanding capabilities as far as developing the plot for a thriller. His unfolding of the tale was a bit clunky at first, but really took off as the story progressed.
I would concur that violence was seminal to the plot, perhaps even to the point of its vivid detailing.
Maybe this would not have been the book he intended without it.
But the sudden emergence of that violence seemed to make it an entirely different story than what I personally had anticipated.
Depending upon how well you stomach graphic violence, you may or may not enjoy "Find Me."
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2017I didn't know what to expect when I first read the blurb of Find Me, it seemed like one of those books that would keep you guessing until the very end, not knowing what really happened and if you can believe the characters in the story and I can truly say it was just like I imagined, but in a good way! Find Me is a thrilling book that will take everything you know and throw it into the air all while watching the pieces as they fall down around you.
Jar and Rosa were in love with each other, that is until the night when Rosa died. Even though it was classed as an accident, Jar doesn't believe that the woman who held his heart would just be gone with nothing more than a small accident. When he receives a email appearing from Rosa, he starts to think that maybe he was right and that she still is alive, but in doing so it also brings about the questions. If she is still alive, why didn't she come looking for him? Or better yet, why did she run away in the first place, claiming to be dead?
From reading this story, I admire Jar's character so much, you can truly see how much he loves Rosa and that he believes she is still out there somewhere. I liked the element of not knowing what would happen next, it is something I find keeps you enthralled in the story and pushes you to read as much as you can in one sitting.
I know at this point most people would say that their favourite character would be Jar as he is the realistic choice, but I am going to be different and choose Rosa. Her character is one of strength, unpredictable and truly life changing in the sense that it is her story being told not just through her but through Jar and how he sees her as a person and not just the love of his life.
Find Me is a captivating book that will have you itching to find out the ending and will surprise you throughout the book with the secrets that get revealed. J.S. Monroe has done a brilliant job of writing characters that fit perfectly together and make this story such an enjoyable read that everyone who likes mystery will love.
Three Words
Captivating, Powerful and Thrilling.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2017Quick and easy to read and not altogether unbelievable in light of true stories that have popped up around the world. Parts of the story require the reader to suspend reality a little more than they might wish, but all in all well worth checking out. Would make for a great film or TV series.

5.0 out of 5 stars J.S.Monroe
A narrative that keeps you intrigued and involved all through the book. As the promotion says, the conclusion is unexpected. I have thoroughly enjoyed all works by J.S.Monroe that I have learned is the pseudonym for Jon Stock.

5.0 out of 5 stars A super read
This is such a cleverly woven storyline with a thrilling plot that kept me enthralled throughout. The story starts off slowly, with the first part alternating between the present (with Jar searching for his love, the presumed dead Rosa); and the history of their meeting and subsequent relationship. I thought this worked particularly well in building up an in-depth picture of them both, and told a tale of love and anguish. I liked Jar and his Irish charm, and found Rosa to be equally likeable, and so while the action sometimes meandered rather than rushed, I didn't mind at all and in fact thought it worked well in building up the tension.
Find Me is a thrilling read and to be fair at times I felt like I was being plunged into a spy story, especially in the first part of the book. It is this cat and mouse chase where I was always on the hunt for clues to the truth. Carrying me through this was the love that Jar and Rosa shared, which was brought to life through the flashbacks and by the grief hallucinations which Jar believes he is suffering from; all of which made me want to find out what has truly happened to Rosa.
The second part of the novel becomes in a way a little darker, and I was taken slightly away from the world of spies, to one of experimentation and torture. I personally found the whole scientific aspect really interesting, though I did have to put aside my own objections to them first! It did however bring another welcome level to the book in terms of its obvious research, and thankfully it made this accessible whilst not talking down to the reader. It's always nice to learn something new I feel, even if it is a little disturbing!
The pace picks up in this second part with the revelation of Rosa's fate becoming apparent quite early on in Part Two. This is the part then that you need to set some time aside for, because you will not want to leave yourself waiting for the ending. I really enjoyed Find Me - it's a super read.

5.0 out of 5 stars FIND ME
I'm a seasoned crime thriller reader. The suspense is killing me us often misquoted. This book is at the forefront of brilliant writing. When her father dies, Rosa is devastated. She is just starting University. She meets Jarleth Costello, Jar to his friends. To write a synopsis of this story would reveal too much. Rosa is believed to have committed suicide, her body was never found. Jar doesn't believe his "sightings" are hallucinations. Be prepared for the suspense to kill you. Best read in a very long time. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbingly birlliant
A lot of things in this book sickened me as animal testing is horrific but it was such a good story and I could not put it down. This author really knows how to engage! Brilliant.
