In this chilling and disquieting debut thriller perfect for fans of Caroline Kepnes’s Hidden Bodies and Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter series, a family man with a habit of digging up the past catches the attention of a serial killer who wants anything but his secrets uncovered.

For years, unbeknownst to his wife and teenage daughter, Martin Reese has been illegally buying police files on serial killers and obsessively studying them, using them as guides to find the missing bodies of victims. He doesn’t take any souvenirs, just photos that he stores in an old laptop, and then he turns in the results anonymously. Martin sees his work as a public service, a righting of wrongs.

Detective Sandra Whittal sees the situation differently. On a meteoric rise in police ranks due to her case‑closing efficiency, Whittal is suspicious of the mysterious source she calls the Finder, especially since he keeps leading the police right to the bodies. Even if he isn’t the one leaving bodies behind, how can she be sure he won’t start soon?

On his latest dig, Martin searches for the first kill of Jason Shurn, the early 1990s murderer who may have been responsible for the disappearance of his wife’s sister. But when he arrives at the site, he finds more than just bones. There’s a freshly killed body—a young and missing Seattle woman—lying among remains that were left there decades ago. Someone else knew where Jason Shurn left the corpses of his victims…and that someone isn’t happy that Martin has been going around digging up his work. And when a crooked cop with a tenuous tie to Martin vanishes, Whittal begins to zero in on the Finder.

Hunted by a real killer and by Whittal, Martin realizes that in order to escape, he may have to go deeper into the killer’s dark world than he ever thought…

Review

“A fast-paced, morbidly addictive novel of chilling infatuation. Ripley’s impressive debut is a rich and innovative thriller.”—Iain Reid, bestselling author of I'm Thinking of Ending Things

“A wickedly smart thriller that manages to be both chilling and wry. The page-turning plot . . . is thickened by a great cast of characters and Nathan Ripley’s fantastic eye for detail and dialogue. Just when you think you’ve got a grasp on it, the story twists to new and darker places.”—
Amy Stuart, bestselling author of Still Mine

“It's not always easy diving into the mind of an obsessive protagonist, but Martin Reese's fixation on finding dead bodies makes for one heck of an addictive thriller.
Find You in the Dark by Nathan Ripley is an original, inventive take on what happens when you go looking where you shouldn't. Start reading early in the day, or you'll be up all night like I was! A standout debut novel.”—Jennifer Hillier, author of Jar of Hearts and Wonderland

Find You in the Dark is an unsettling exploration of obsession you won’t soon forget. Nathan Ripley delivers a first novel that fans of Patricia Highsmith psychological thrills and Thomas Harris cat-and-mouse suspense will devour. I certainly did.”—Andrew Pyper, author of The Demonologist and The Only Child

Crafty and dark, Nathan Ripley’s novel toys with the lines between predator and prey, his sentences as careful and considered as the crimes he depicts…a truly exciting new voice in the thriller world.”—Roz Nay, bestselling author of Our Little Secret

“A fresh angle to the serial murder game. There's a certain
Silence of the Lambs feel to the twisty narrative.”—Kirkus Reviews

Booklist

“This debut thriller by the pseudonymous Ripley (Journey Prize winner Naben Ruthnum) is highly recommended for fans of Lee Child and C.J. Box.”—
Library Journal

“Impressive. . . . Dark and disturbing,
Find You in the Dark is a thriller that defies expectations, sporting an original premise and a truly unreliable protagonist, whose point of view dominates the book. Although the novel and its (anti?) hero may remind some of Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter series, I think the stronger association will be with the work of Ira Levin (Stepford Wives, A Kiss Before Dying), who always managed to give the everyday a sinister tinge.”Mystery Scene Magazine

“A chilling story of a man who could’ve conceivably become a serial killer pitted against one who actually is.”—
New York Journal of Books

“I read so many thrillers that for the most part, they don't freak me out anymore. This one did. This freaked me out so badly that when my husband went away for the weekend, I made him take this book with him so I couldn't read it while home alone.”—
Brunette Biblio

“A chilling and disquieting debut thriller. . . . You’ll stay up all night with this one.”—
Criminal Element

“You are definitely in for one creepy, disturbing read!”—

“Nathan Ripley delivers nothing short of a page turning grisly thriller in his first novel Find You in the Dark”—
Book Junkie Reviews

“Under the pen name for journalist and award-winning writer Naben Ruthnum comes a thriller that is frightening and captivating, a combination of
Dexter, and The Talented Mr. Ripley.”Booktrib

Find You in the Dark breaks the mold by providing an intelligent commentary on justice, grief, and good vs. evil. All in all, you really can't ask for more from a serial killer thriller.”— A Book A Week

“This was quite a ride. I enjoyed every page! Those ranks right up there with some of the best mysteries I’ve read…and I read a lot of mysteries.”—
Chez Shay Online

“This is the best thriller I’ve read in ages . . . [Nathan Ripley] can write his a** off.”—
Edward Lorn

“There is something unsettling about this story and readers will feel that tension growing as they consume
Find You in the Dark. Contrasting and conflicting emotions will dominate, making it impossible to stop until the chase is complete. Just remember that Nietzsche has warned us: ‘If you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.’”— BOLO Books

All I ask of a thriller novel is to be great fun for a few days, and Ripley's Find You in the Dark does exactly that. Dark, twisty (but not fully reliant upon the twists like some thrillers are), and compellingly written. It goes beyond a good thriller in my opinion, though, with a really well-written homicide detective--Sandra Whittal is a great character, and what drives her really comes off the page well. You spend most of the book with Martin Reese, though, and fortunately, he's also a solid protagonist with some inner demons. Highly recommended.

Find You in the Dark was a story where the writing wasn't the best, the characters were not very realistic, but the story itself was interesting enough that I kept reading because I wanted to see what would happen. And I am glad I did as I enjoyed how everything played out.

Martin Reese is a married father of one who has an odd hobby - he gets information from a lax police office and finds the bodies of victims of serial killers who are now in jail or dead. No one knows he does this. He goes camping a lot and on those camping trips he finds the bodies. He is so smart he can see what others have missed. He can find the clues in what the killers have said to find where they hid their victims so the victim's families can have some closure. His wife's sister went missing when she was in college and his wife has issues to this day because of it. They never found her body so they don't really know what happened to her, only what they think happened.

Now Martin is kind of a creepy guy. He can come off as the normal person, but he has a past and really who goes out and digs up dead bodies like that? It is strange, but then he gets mixed up in a situation that could be very very bad for him. Someone isn't very happy that he is finding people who were never supposed to be found and so they want to make Martin pay. That is where the story gets really good. Where you are like how in the world is he going to get out of this? I really enjoyed it and who was involved and all of that.

Now there is also a cop who is after Martin as she has singled him out as being the Finder - the guy who finds the bodies. And she was my least favorite part of the book because while the other characters weren't always written so they felt 100% real, she was written so she was like a caricature of what her character was supposed to be. She was so over the top not realistic it was distracting. Her conversations with people didn't read right, the way she acted and what she did was too much. But I did enjoy what happened with her and the other cops. How everything played out. It was pretty good. Though then she suddenly changed on some big things by the end which didn't make the most sense to me, but oh well.

Overall the writing wasn't the best, but the story itself made up for it. The ending was great, I enjoyed reading and kept wanting to know what would happen next.

Martin Reese is harboring a secret that threatens to completely alter his life as he knows it. He knows that his unique hobby is unconventional. That's putting it mildly. Others might see it as downright obscene, but Martin sees it as a kind of public service, an act of vigilantism that only he can perform. He keeps it secret from his wife and daughter. It's easier to keep this part of his life hidden. He's developed a pretty solid routine that helps him separate this piece of himself from the rest of his life. Retirement and a mass fortune from the tech company that he founded certainly help. Now, his years of caution seem to be for naught. Someone has discovered his secret.

Martin's obsession started innocently enough. He carefully took notice of his future wife Erin when he realized they attended the same university. How could he not notice the woman whose sister disappeared and was purported to be the victim of the brutal serial killer Jason Shurn? When Erin realized she was being watched, she approached Martin. Strangely, the two began a romantic relationship and the rest is history. Years later, the couple is married, have a daughter, and seem to be living a picture perfect life. If only Erin knew what Martin did during his periodic "camping trips".

Detective Sandra Whittal has seen a quick rise in her professional life due to a quick instinct and superior record of closing cases. She's been haunted by the work of the Finder, a mysterious person who has taken it upon themselves to dig up the long-lost bodies of murder victims. Some of her colleagues see this Finder as nothing more than a lone crazy person who is not harming anyone by his intermittent antics. If anything, at least some families are finally getting closure. Sandra is not so optimistic. There is something about the Finder's digitally altered voice that sends a chill down her spine. No sane person would investigate decades-old murder cases and dig up the victims' remains. When the freshly murdered body of a girl is discovered at the site of the Finder's latest dig, Sandra is convinced. She must find and stop this Finder.

Find You in the Dark sees author Naben Ruthnum (writing here as Nathan Ripley) present an intricately plotted and darkly thought-provoking thriller that will have you questioning where the line between good and evil truly lies. Both Martin Reese and Sandra Whittal are flawed characters who face grim realities that only add to the intrigue and believability of this novel. At first, I wasn't sure what to make of the novel. Ripley purposefully omits the darker details of the Reese family during the opening portions of the book. This allows for an adequate development of the family dynamic that created even higher stakes when the more traditional thriller elements kicked in later in the story. Beyond being the kind of slow-burning, read into all hours of the night novel I've come to expect of a summer release, Find You in the Dark breaks the mold by providing an intelligent commentary on justice, grief, and good vs. evil. All in all, you really can't ask for more from a serial killer thriller.

I was looking for a book that was terrifying, with an unexpected premise and excellent writing and Nathan Ripley delivered with this thriller. There was no way I could have seen that great ending coming.

Overall, a very well-written (and creepy!) novel. Not to mention incredibly terrifying with the issues of kidnapping and murder therein; it hit me hard. Martin Reese is a very complex character with some psychopathic tendencies. It was difficult to wrap my head around the beginning though, mostly because the writing didn't flow as well as I wanted it to. I felt as though I had to stop and reread all the time; the sentence structure just felt off to me. Plus, it's my first time reading Nathan Ripley, whose style of writing is different than what I'm used to.

But there is a lot in this, and it's fascinating! Which is probably what kept me on the edge of my seat despite the fear for Martin and Kylie's safety. There were times when I thought the cops were slow on the investigation too, and always several steps behind Martin (maybe it makes sense though, idk), but this was briefly mentioned in the end, so at least it didn't go unnoticed.

As for the ending, it was not at all what I expected, but still somewhat happy. I'll most definitely be reading it again in the future.
