Fixtures & Fittings (The Blackwood Family Saga Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 28 ratings

Sometimes, a choice must be made. What to keep and what to leave behind

Rich, handsome, sophisticated Marcus Backwood has it all. Then a double murder turns his perfect life upside down, leaving him sole guardian of his young niece. Traumatised into muteness, Megan needs so much more than Marcus believes he can ever give her.

Searching for their forever home, instead Marcus finds Grace Lovejoy. An eccentric single parent, Grace and her children are being forced to sell their house. Somehow a connection is forged between Megan and the Lovejoy family, which Marcus hopes will bring his little niece back from a very dark place.

And then there's Grace herself. The complete antithesis to everything he has ever looked for in a woman, yet still there is a bond between them that Marcus cannot explain. She is not what he wants, but is she what he needs?

And all the time, the deadly consequences of trying to break Megan's silence creep ever closer, because there is a killer out there with unfinished business.

A heart-warming, romantic read interspersed with edge-of-the-seat action, Fixtures & Fittings is one book you will want to keep forever.

This is Marcus Blackwood's story. On the surface, Marcus appears to have it all - the money, the lifestyle, the women - and becoming a father overnight was not in his plans. So, what does he do? He steps up to the mark, because he is Marcus Blackwood and his family means everything to him.

Fixtures & Fittings is book two of the fabulously exciting Blackwood Family Saga - which tells the individual stories of the strong men, and even stronger women, who make up this eclectic and eccentric clan, and their bumpy road to finding true love.

This riveting story unfolds as Blake lights the fire with her pen
Marcus Blackwood, the eldest of the Blackwood children, seemingly has it all; single, wealth beyond belief, brilliant, and handsome. In a moment this has drastically changed and now he’s guardian of Megan, his seven year old niece, following the horrific murder of her parents. Marcus is looking for a specific house for himself and Megan, hoping for some kind of normalcy for her. Grace Lovejoy is a throw back hippie flower child with three children living in an old house with character and a tree house which is up for sale. I saw this coming and thought no way! This is like throwing oil on a fire. BUT! There’s something there...a spark! This riveting story unfolds as Blake lights the fire with her pen. She has taken the “opposites attract” thing to a whole new level by bringing two of the most unlikely of characters together. Guess what? It works even though Marcus and Grace don’t know it. This is a thrilling and gripping story with characters that come to life right off the page. I found myself talking to the characters out loud or holding the book in a death grip. Here’s the bare bones... •carefree bachelorhood vs parenthood •fast paced heart pounding thrills •danger, murder and intrigue •a killer on the loose •an innocent child in mortal danger •family •romance •love This is a fast paced story tightly woven and held together by love and family. Blake’s writing has a way of keeping you turning page after page till there are no more pages to turn. Then it hit me. Fixtures and Fittings, a perfect title about people and things and making them all fit together somehow. That’s love. That’s family.

I began Fixtures and Fittings, Book 2 in the Blackwood Family Saga, immediately after finishing book 1, Lost and Found. I just kept going and binged through it in two sessions. These books are addictive. This is Marcus's story. He is the older half-brother to Luke of book 1. I loved Luke and now I think I love Marcus even more, if that’s possible. But then I just finished reading about him. He inherited the family’s business after the father died, and has handled the business well. At first he seems overly self-controlled and sophisticated, but he is truly kind and thoughtful with a lot of love to give. It’s just that there is a big hole in his life and he hasn’t realized what it is yet.

Then there is a terrible tragedy. Marcus’ American mother calls with the horrific news that his half sister and brother-in-law have been murdered and his little niece Megan, only 7, has witnessed it all. She is traumatized and can’t even talk. She is completely mute. Marcus retrieves her and brings her back to London. How will he cope? But he is smitten and opens his heart. He just isn’t sure if he has what it takes to make her whole. Finding a true home, something cozy and warm, not a sophisticated bachelor’s pad, is the next step. That’s when he meets Grace Lovejoy and her three children. She is under financial strain and must sell their beautiful, warm and sprawling home. It is a home alive with chaotic family life but without the means to truly keep it maintained. But it is filled with something more important: love. Grace has been widowed and has remained single, doing her best to survive. She is a powerhouse of strength, beautiful in a natural hippie way, works hard, loves her children fiercely and will surely change Marcus. He learns what a true family can be. Grace, her amazing and mature teen daughter, Zoey (who wants to work with children with special needs) and her mischievous twin boys, may have what it takes to help Megan heal and Marcus as well.

But the danger isn’t over. As if this isn’t drama enough, this recovery from such loss, the murderer is back and after Megan, leaving everyone in danger. There is a mystery to who actually killed Megan’s’ parents, a mystery to be solved and more than one thrilling episode of life threatening events to endure. The final climax is over-the-top excellent, heart-pounding and original.

Ms. Blake writes her characters well and I especially love her children. The teen Zoey is so believable in her maturity and vulnerability, you come to admire and love her and the twin boys are spot on. Megan is drawn to perfection. She is just how you would imagine a bright child who has been witness to such horror would respond. Family members from book one appear in this story and the family dynamics build further, but this book is primarily focused on Marcus and his relationship with Grace. On to book three: Sugar and Spice, featuring the Blackwood sister Susannah.

Anyone house buying? Or interested in following stories of people looking at buying houses? Purely fictional of course, but Fixtures & Fittings had me glued to the couch, and also under the Nashi Pear tree, with a plastic faded green chair, a cross wind and Chloe of course. This was no ordinary house hunting, what started with a facination with a tree house ended up being something entirely different. With all that was going on, I'm really suprised our Marcus Blackwood wasn't quanked, he stayed cool, calm and collected and above all ... polite! I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Marcus Blackwood.

Nope ... no, no tittynope here with Julia Blakes descriptive writing on food... the smells, the taste, will have you frantically searching in your own fridge. But it's not all smiles, laughter and appetising food. We are horrified of the events slowly revealed to us of what happened to Megan, so frighteningly tragic, that it has left her mute. I tell you what did steal the show is ... the twins 😍 although throwing rotten tomatoes was a hilarious incident, I did sort of cringe when something happened in the car.

So let's join Marcus Blackwood and family, Grace Lovejoy and Co and see where this leads. Can they get Megan to talk? What really happened? It will be interesting to see where the relationship goes with Marcus and Grace Lovejoy, will there be love and joy?

Warmth just oozed out of this delightful, totally charming romance/murder mystery novel. Loved him, loved her, loved Megan and the other characters, and loved the interaction of ordinary human behaviours, fear, shyness, and surprise attraction that turned a simple plot into an evening where you finish the book no matter what.
Well developed characters and a gorgeous flowing style made this a pleasure. I felt good as the ending made its appearance, so will you.

Marcus' story took off running with such heartfelt emotion. To read the story of this handsome rich bachelor, who already has a big heart that matches his family's, opens his heart more to take in his niece than an unforeseen family in the Lovejoy's. I just love stories of big single men who give their hearts and protection to children. And how out of his element he thought he was in when he met Grace Lovejoy, only to discover he's in love. Yes, opposites attract! Again, Julia wrote believable characters with raw emotion, that you just can't help falling in love with them.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Entry In The Blackwood Saga

For the second book in this series, we get a peek at the life of Blackwood son, Marcus. He runs the family business and leads a playboy life of riches and no family responsibilities. When a tragic murder rocks the Blackwoods, he finds himself the guardian to his traumatized 7-year-old niece, and suddenly a supermodel girlfriend and clinical modern apartment don't mean as much as they did. To help his niece heal, Marcus wants to find a family home, and the perfect house might also come with a new relationship. Like the first book in the series, this is a quick read. You will need to care about the characters, however, as unlike book 1 which focuses on a kidnapping, all the action of this book is in the final few chapters. Thankfully, Julia Blake is a master at making you care about her characters and I read through to the last page to see how Marcus faired when up against a killer and falling for someone he never expected to.

The cornerstone of a great novel is it’s ability to tug at your emotions. This is something that Julia Blake has mastered.
In Fixtures & Fittings, our hearts are wrapped up with the characters and their trials from the first page to the last.
This is no great mystery as the hints of “Who dunnit” are there very early on, but it doesn’t make this any less of a page-turner.
Now, I’m looking forward to Sugar & Spice, book 3 in the Blackwood sagas. Bring it on!

5.0 out of 5 stars Julia Blake delivers another captivating read

Having already enjoyed a few books from Julia Blake, I know I’m always in for captivating story. And, in Fixtures and Fittings, she delivers once again. The background allows you to leap in as a standalone, the characters are vivid and real, the pacing varies with the ups and downs of the plot, and you get all the feels as you read along.
While I didn’t get the title at first, Fixtures & Fittings is perfect for this story of inherited wealth; not just of the bricks and mortar type, but of people, kindness and love. Marcus Blackwood inherits huge financial wealth on the death of his father, but, when his sister and her husband are brutally murdered, he also inherits the guardianship of his traumatised niece, Megan. The story revolves around her road to recovery, and to his re-evaluation of what’s important. By chance, the road leads towards Grace Lovejoy, her family, and their contrasting circumstances. It also leads them back into the tracks of a murderer.
It's a wonderful read. I won’t go on … I’ve just downloaded the next book.

Truly thrilling! Edge-of-your-seat suspense, brilliantly crafted, a sublime heart-pumping story!

Fixtures & Fittings, is the second book in a series following the trials, troubles and loves of the Blackwood family. As a book I devoured it quickly, as it was nigh impossible to put down! The perfect sign of a great writer!

Starting with a heart-stopped blow, it pulls you straight into Marcus's story. With the tragic death of his sister, he's left sole guardian of his traumatised young niece, Megan. Witnessing the brutal murder of her parents, she's left mute and distraught.

We travel with them through the next few heart-wrenching weeks in search of the answers, as slick businessman Marcus fumbles around trying to do his best at his new role of parent. Then Marcus finds Grace Lovejoy and her children, a wholesome unassuming family. Slowly realising that the last thing he was looking for, was the one thing he needed, together, they bring young Megan from her dark silence, but, with devastating results...

There's still a murderer out there with unfinished business... there's a storm brewing!

Julia Blake has the ability to create believable characters, in believable situations, with a sense of true emotional integrity. We fall in love and truly care about them. A must read, perfect to thrill on a cold winter afternoon.

Sometimes, You have to choose what to keep, and what to leave behind...  5/5

Fixtures and fittings, the second book in the Blackwood Family saga, centers around Marcus Blackwood.

Rich, Handsome and Suave, he has it all, until tragedy rips apart their family, leaving him the sole guardian of his young niece Megan, Changing both of their lives forever.

Marcus's struggle to help Megan leads him into the path of Grace Lovejoy. A single mother of two, who is forced into selling her beloved family home. As a connection builds between Megan and the Lovejoy children, She begins to heal, but there are sinister and deadly consequences!

This nailbiting tale of Tragedy and Romance, rips at the heartstrings, fill you with joy, and excitement and keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through, with Twists, turns and characters that you can't help but fall in love with.

A story that stands on its own even if you haven't manage to read the prequel (though I recommend you read both, to get the full impact - not to mention that they are both fantastic books!)

As with her other books, such as Becoming Lily, and her compendium of short stories and poems Eclairs for Tea, Julia's writing brings you into a heart-warming world with gloriously descriptive and empathic writing that really makes you feel what the characters feel.

A wonderful read, and highly recommended.
