Fable of Happiness: Book Two Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,489 ratings

From New York Times Bestseller, Pepper Winters, comes the second book in Kas and Gem’s twisted romance.

A valley full of secrets.
A history full of nightmares.
A man who cannot be saved.
And a woman who holds his very life in her hands.

Strange how the villain of a story can so easily become the victim.
Utter lunacy to think the captive might now become the caregiver.
Gemma has a decision to make.
Her life or his.
Follow her heart, even when it’s screaming at her to run?
Or turn her back on the man who could become her everything?

This series was amazing! For me it was dark Beauty and the Beast, meets Savaged by Mia Sheridan, also slightly meets Sick Fux by Tillie Cole. The storyline is so well done. Something different from what Pepper normally does. Yet it definitely has her feel to it. You get very dark elements as the series goes. So check tws SERIOUSLY. Especially in book 2. Book 2 was definitely my favorite of the 3. But man all 3 for me were so well done and perfect. Kassen is so intriguing, so animalistic, very intense character. His story is brutal. Seriously heartbreaking. Absolutely enjoyed his character a ton. Might be one of my new favorite MC from her books. I mean Q is always gonna hold that top spot. But Kass is up there! Gemma was a badass. She seriously had her struggles with what was happening but grew to understand. And then grew to love. These two needed eachother. Man books 2 and 3 soooo much happens I never saw coming. I went through literally every damn emotion. Seriously fantastic Trilogy!!!! These make book 18 since January that I've read of Pepper Winters. Still longggg backlist but I'm getting through them and I'm absolutely loving the journey! I've noticed May is turning into a Hartmers month for me. 😉 Lots of Jennifer Hartmann and Pepper Winters books so far. Absolute perfection!!!!

Holy hotness! What just happened with that cliffhanger! This is the second book in the Fable series. Pepper Winters you threw the ball out of the park! This book…this book is decadent, delicious, and dangerously addictive that it is so ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY good!! Kas is such a broken beast from the past and intertwining with the present, he doesn’t know which is what…until Gemma…the one to stand up to him and makes him feel wanted! The vortex of crackling lust shattering Kas’s will power to redeem hope from despair, love from separation, and the memories of the repeated abuse from his past. Kas will do anything to stay in self-imposed exile in the house of terror even if it means keeping Gemma against her will. But Kas doesn’t count on Gemma making him long for things that he never felt before. And the more she slips past his defenses, the more it is impossible to keep his distance. Gemma just wanted to go home to her job, house and family, but when she was given the opportunity, she decided to stay to help Kas because she fell in loved him. This isn’t a fairy tale—Beauty and the Beast love story—this is the dark side. It is sizzling with the passion they can’t contain. It’s love in the raw without caring about the consequences. It’s feeling when they thought it was unattainable. It’s a purge of the past and fighting for the present and a future, but love is not without pain or sacrifice. The darkness inherited in the characters will make you afraid to turn the page, but the sexiness of it all will assure that you do. Now, Kas and Gemma will have to decide: Will they help each other heal? Will Kas accept Gemma’s help OR are they forever broken? Pepper Winters writes forbidden romance with a gripping intensity that flows from the pages. With a flawless prose, Pepper Winters has constructed a masterpiece that will lure you into the wee hours and beyond that you will not be able to put this book down. I listened to the audible of this book, and I loved the two narrators—Tor Thom and Charley Ongel, now listed as two of my favorite narrators. A MUST-BUY!! Can’t wait for the next book to find out what happened!

As much as I like this story, I was starting to get bored with the constant second guessing inner dialog between both of them. However I plan on reading the final book.

Fable of happiness – Book two by Pepper Winters
Held as a captive, all Gemma wants is to go home, to her beloved brother, who should be going out of his mind with worry. At every chance, she fights Kas to break free, until she almost kills him. Left with a decision, one which she may live to regret, she stays and tries to help him recover. When Kas wakes, she never knows which version she will get of him, and at times, it almost costs her, her life. But with each moment, more and more of his haunted dreams are revealed and Gemma starts to understand what this man has lived through, and that all he has ever done is try to protect a family that left him in the end. Is she trying to be his protector, or has she fallen for the man who can't remember certain parts of his short-term memory? Kas is chained to his nightmares, which are so deeply entrenched in the abandoned mansion, full of evil and fears that reside within the walls. Can he decide what is real now and what is in the past, or will he take his anger out on Gemma who is desperately trying to guide the light back in? This was a rollercoaster of a story. The tension is off the Richter scale but in between all this, some intimate moments were scorching hot. And then just when Gemma makes a huge decision, another almighty shock of a cliffhanger. Oh, bring on book three, so I can go back down the rabbit hole.

“She’s truly mine. Utterly and completely. And she would hate me for every second of it.”

Holy h*ll this book put me through the wringer!! It picks up right we’re we left off and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! Gem is still as brave and kind hearted as she is in the first book but she also shows so much strength it was truly mesmerizing to read. Kas, my not so sweet broken man, we learn more about his past and the tragedies he had to endure and it was so heartbreaking that it brought tears to my eyes. He is hateful and cruel but Gem can see past his layers and find the man underneath them all. Both are survivors, protectors and both struggle with their own internal battles. Confused by the bond that connects them.

“We weren’t human. We were claws and cruelty, imprinting and scarring each other before the moment could be stolen.”

The ending!!!!???? Man I was not prepared for it and luckily we only have to wait a couple of months for Book 3 because I will be biting my nails until I get my hands on it!! If you love dark and broken characters this series is for you! Highly recommend!!

“I had a soul-deep conviction that Kas had reached a point of no return.”

Pepper has once again sucked me in. I did not want to put this book down.
Kas and Gem are everything two leads should be and together, OMG, explosive.
It was great getting more of Kassen’s backstory and that ending, pure Pepper perfection.
This trilogy (yep I’m including book 3) is a top read for me in 2021

5.0 out of 5 stars Pepper Winters is my Dark Queen and I will gladly follow her to the dark pits of hell!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 4, 2021
Man, Pepper Winters knows how to take your heart and pulverize it into smithereens before slowly, oh so slowly putting it back together.

The second book in the Fable of Happiness trilogy picks up exactly where the first left off. And while the first one was a slow burn, painstakingly setting up the world of Fables and its characters, creating more questions than giving full answers, the second book goes full throttle into the character building of Kassen and Gemma. And what glorious characters they are.

Kassen is by far Pepper's most broken male character and my heart was breaking and howling in pain for all he went through and all that he's still going through. He's developed the instincts of an animal during his childhood and only honed them further in the 11 years since he's been living alone. When Gemma trespassed into his valley, she sent his life into a tailspin and Kassen is struggling something fierce. Seriously, I wanted to cry at his pain and misery and desolation. I wanted to reach into the pages and hug him so hard that all his broken pieces would start knitting back together.

And Gemma? What a warrior! Every Pepper heroine starts out as a victim, but over the course of their stories they turn into magnificent beasts of their own, fighting the monsters in the dark and the pitfalls of life right along side the heroes, and usually are the ones to save said heroes. Gemma's empathy and compassion are burning bright in this second instalment and her determination to help Kassen is awe-inspiring!

Their connection is soul-deep and their chemistry off the freaking charts scorching hot, their struggles are heart wrenching and their road to HEA not even close. But I trust in Pepper to deliver. I trust her to mend my soul.

I devoured this book and now I'm even more intrigued about the rest of the Fable family. And when I read the last chapter, I was screaming and sobbing and my heart was bleeding all over the floor. October seems so far away and this limbo is going to kill me. But, the last two pages kicked my obsession with this book to high gear and I'm salivating for more!!!

Pepper Winters is my Dark Queen and I will follow her to the dark pits of hell and gladly let her smash my heart to pieces!

5.0 out of 5 stars The top read of 2021!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 3, 2021
Oh wow! Yet again I'm blown away. Book one was almost slow burn with so many questions I was dying to know the answers to. This one jumped straight to the answers, though I'm sure there will be a lot more to be exposed of this story. Kas has to be one of the most broken characters Pepper has written and I absolutely loved him all the more for it, I never ever though my heart would be consumed with anyone other than Q but Kas has definitely stolen it. What a tortured soul he is.
One of the things I love about Peppers books are the female characters, they may always be perceived as the 'victims' of whatever travesty is going on in the storyline but to me she writes about Queens, women so strong and full of heart that you can't help but adore and admire them. Gemma was one of those queens, one of the most empathetic characters I have ever read about, her basic humanity bleeds through the pages, she shows determination and selflessness in every action. The push and pull between Kas and Gem will twist you up, the attraction and lust is there but that attraction throughout the book turns to something deeper, more than attraction, more than lust its a merging of souls, though neither see it.
My head is still all caught up in the story, I can't unsee the heartache but the one thing this story has done is leave me gasping for more, I need the next book like I need my next breathe. Pepper Winters has once again slayed me and proven that through the magic of her words she will always stay at the top of her game. I actually sat staring at the wall for a good half an hour after finishing the book, just trying to process (was probably longer). The last page literally had my eyes bugging out, Pepper Winters killed me, dead. How am I supposed to wait for book 3? It's like torture...
