Fool Me Once: A Novel Paperback – April 5, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
—ROSIE DANAN, author of The Roommate
In this fierce and funny battle of the exes, Ashley Winstead's Fool Me Once explores the chaos of wanting something you used to have.
Lee Stone is a twenty-first-century woman: she kicks butt at her job as a communications director at a women-run electric car company (that’s better than Tesla, thank you), and after work she is “Stoner,” drinking guys under the table and never letting any of them get too comfortable in her bed…
That’s because Lee’s learned one big lesson: never trust love. Four major heartbreaks set her straight, from her father cheating on her mom all the way to Ben Laderman in grad school—who wasn’t actually cheating, but she could have sworn he was, so she reciprocated in kind.
Then Ben shows up five years later, working as a policy expert for the most liberal governor in Texas history, just as Lee is trying to get a clean energy bill rolling. Things get complicated—and competitive—as Lee and Ben are forced to work together. Tension builds just as old sparks reignite, fanning the flames for a romantic dustup the size of Texas.
Don't miss The Boyfriend Candidate, Ashley Winstead's next laugh-out-loud rom-com about learning to embrace living outside your comfort zone!

Editorial Reviews
Review
—RACHEL LYNN SOLOMON, bestselling author of The Ex-Talk
“A love story for every truly hot mess… A romance with bite, wit, and heart.”
—Kirkus Reviews, STARRED review
“A simmering slow burn bursting with banter, Fool Me Once has all the raunch, humor, and charm of a Judd Apatow movie but with the kind of flawed, dynamic heroine rom-com fans have been waiting for. This is a romance for anyone who’s ever felt too messy to be loved.”
—ROSIE DANAN, author of The Roommate
“I absolutely love a messy heroine; throw in political schemes and off-the-charts chemistry, and Fool Me Once delivers a wild, sexy ride from start to finish!"
—TRISH DOLLER, author of Float Plan
“Fresh, funny, and chaotically wonderful, Fool Me Once had me hooked from the very first page! Winstead weaves an undeniably sexy tale of will-they/won't-they that is sure to be a phenomenal addition to every rom-com lover's library.”
—KATE BROMLEY, author of Talk Bookish to Me
"Winstead offers a sharp and witty rom-com styled novel in the vein of HBO’s The Flight Attendant and Julie Valerie’s Holly Banks Full of Angst… Fool Me Once is a gem."
—Booklist
“Sparks fly and laughs abound as Winstead rides the line between enemies-to-lovers and second-chance romance tropes. Readers will want to snap this up.”
—Publishers Weekly

- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2022Just a quick synopsis.. Lee, the protagonist, is a successful, intelligent, witty woman who is such a mess! She is driven at work, pushing for a bill to help Texas go green, when her ex-boyfriend, Ben, is assigned to partner with her to get the bill to pass. She hasn’t seen Ben in five years, since she cheated on him and he ran away to California. There are definitely lingering feelings between the two and as they work closely, tension begins to build.
You guys!!! Is there anything Ashley Winstead cannot do? My adoration started after devouring and loving In My Dreams I Hold A Knife, I had to get my hands on her next book! When I realized Fool Me Once was a romance, I wasn’t AS excited, but I still had to read it. I am so happy I did! This book. Bare with me, as I was so excited to get this review out, but I am still experiencing the worst book hangover. First I just want to hit on the talent of this amazing woman!! How can she go from coming out with her debut, a top thriller this year and then so effortlessly switch to writing romance, like she has written it all along? It’s seriously mind blowing that these books are from the same author! I just want to say, I will forever read everything that she puts out! She is an auto buy author for me!
This book had me rolling from the first chapter! It has such fast paced, quick-witted dialogue, I absolutely loved it! Lee, or known to friends as Stoner, is such a disaster and gets herself into some comical situations! She is just so relatable and likable and you can’t help but root for her! Ben is the boy next door, thoughtful, driven and you feel bad that Stoner broke his heart! I just loved the two of them! Their banter and snarky comments were so entertaining! Annnnnd the open door, steamy, tension filled sex scenes!!! That’s all I will say about that! Just do yourself a favor, add this to your wishlist, your TBR, preorder, because when this comes out in April, you NEED it! Also, the cover 😍 I have to get a copy just for the gorgeous cover so I can stare at it on my bookshelf!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2023I've been in a book slump and this book did the trick. Lee doesn't believe in love after her father cheated on her mother. So as an adult she self sabotages and hurts the only man she truly cares about, Ben. I loved the tension between the two while they are forced to work together. I loved the growth Lee had through out the book as well. The way she accepted that her coping mechanism weren't healthy. The way Ben and her friends held Lee accountable. Ben was such a sweetheart and I loved when he held his ground and told Lee she needed to get it together. I cheered when he walked away. This book had several laugh out loud moments as well and highly recommend this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2022Did not entice me to keep reading. I forced myself to finish and it wasn’t anything spectacular
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2025This is what we need more of in contemporary romance: a genuinely imperfect female lead who's not only working on herself, but working to address the world's problems. A way to feel passionate not just about making love but making change. We CAN have it all!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2023I will read Ashley Winstead’s grocery list if she let me. I adored this book, the characters, the love story, the magic between the characters, it all felt like it came from such a real place.
I laughed, I cried, I had genuine hope, and I was so impressed with the political backdrop that the characters were working in. It was so interesting and well done! I also felt like there was legitimate growth in the characters, and that can be hard to accomplish.
Overall I loved it, and I was reminded of how smart and creative Winstead is in her writing. Originally, I read it a while back but did a little quick re-read before I started The Boyfriend Candidate. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2022I loved the wonderful, hopeful message in this book: that in spite of everything else going on, it’s still possible for politicians to do the right things and it’s possible that Texas could turn blue. I just wish it were true and I really could believe it!
Lee Stone, AKA Stoner, has spent most of her adult life running from intimacy and commitment, believing true, lasting love is just not possible. The thing is, deep down inside, she wants to believe it’s true.
Ben Laderman, her last great love, has suddenly reappeared in her life and is tasked with working with her to pass a green energy bill. In Texas.
It soon becomes apparent that the feelings they had for each other didn’t die with the unfortunate act of infidelity on Lee’s part. Now they have to navigate the treacherous waters of politics while dealing with the distraction of fighting the rekindling of their romance.
This book lays out a future I’d love to see. Being a pragmatist, I doubt it could happen but while reading this book, I almost believed it could.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for Emily Henry fans
Loved this book- fun and witty dialogues, characters to fall in love with and an unexpected wildness of the main character that other romance books are missing. If you love reading Emily Henry, this one is for you

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Read
It’s nice read but being a romance readers I was looking for more angst & romance. I found Lee to be a bit unreasonable at times & rude even. Although plot line was good & different from the books I have read before but I won’t call it a pure romance. It’s a mushy read but if you want a good & different plot u can pick it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
More like this please! Excellent book that is forward thinking without being preachy or losing the romantic heart.
I love that it puts women in the forefront of politics and calls out the double standards we all suffer from, especially around bedroom activities.
The MC is flawed but not unlikeable and her relationships are well fleshed out. I do wonder how she resolved her obvious issues and wish there had been a bit more on that.
If you don't like strong language, drug use or are a staunch conservative you won't like this.
