Footsteps of the Past (Second Chances Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 467 ratings

It was like in the movies: their eyes met from across the room and they fell in love.
Nine years later, Chess and André are the envy of all their friends.
But this is real life….and things are never what they seem.

Still waters run deep—the better to hide Chess’s ugly past. He’s worked hard to bury the troubled teen he once was and is living a life he never imagined possible. André’s love is a gift that makes him believe in second chances, and Chess is grateful for it every day. The only thing he wants is what André finds impossible to give: his time. Six months apart might be the breaking point, even for Chess.

One horrible night changed André’s life forever. Formerly a party boy of the Hamptons social scene, André buries himself in work for years until he meets Chess and learns to enjoy the simple things. He’s tired of being away from home all the time and ready to step down from his role as CEO of the family business, no matter how they try and pull him back in. But old habits die hard…and so do memories.

Photos from the past and present surface, shocking Chess and André out of their carefully constructed dream life. They are forced to face the unthinkable: the love they thought would last a lifetime may be on the brink of falling apart. Secrets are exposed, opening a Pandora’s box both men hoped would stay locked forever. Now Chess and André face the hardest question: do you ever really know the person you’re living with?

Honest and heartfelt love story ❤️

Honest and heartfelt love story ❤️
The journey between Chess and Andre was really interesting because their connection was already established and their story begins 9 years into their relationship. Yes, we know this from the blurb, I just don't read many love stories where the MC's are already past the initial get to know you phase. I really appreciated this POV, as even the most solid relationships can encounter bumps in the road. We did get snippets of their past and how they met, but their love story focused on what happens when from the outside you and your partner are "relationship goals" to everyone else. Things aren't always as they seem. Felice paints a beautiful picture of a couple wildly in love, but even so, events from their past still weigh heavily on Chess and Andre. Nine years seems like a long time not to divulge details of their youth, but insecurity can take hold on even the strongest of relationships. I loved their steadfast devotion to one another as their romance continued. The I Love You's and schmoopy looks didn't get old, they were sweet and sexy together. I would recommend reading The List first. The college friends in this series are great, they're like family you'd love to have in your life ❤️

Felice Stevens has this way of twisting you around so that you kind of expect what may happen but then she tosses a few bombs along the way to shatter your expectations.

In this one we know from the blurb that there is going to be some angst developed between long-time boyfriends Andre, hard-driving heir and CEO of an internationally prominent hotel company, and Chess, a member of the four-man tribe who met in college and continued their friendship over the next decade. They include Elliot from the first book and will conclude with Wolf and Spencer in the last one.

What you don't quite get at the start is where the angst might be coming from because these two men are almost disgustingly in love (compliment) based on their banter, interaction and willingness to fend off what appear to be possible storm clouds on the just-too-much-money Southampton horizon, where the action takes place.

Then a man named Kyle shows up and all hell breaks loose--he was Andre's first tryst 20 years ago and is now legal counsel to Andre's mother, who, along with Kyle, is not happy with Andre's choice of Chess as his partner.

At this point you know where the conflicts will come from, but you will be surprised at how the plot plays out. This is mostly due to the interactions between Chess and his three buddies who all descend upon Andre's Southampton estate for--well, no spoiler. Read it and find out because it's the key to the whole shebang.

And we are left knowing that there will soon be another shebang in the last book of the series. Stick with this one, it's a bit of a slog toward the end but in the end it's a hoot.

Footsteps of the Past is book two in the Second Chances series by Felice Stevens. This is André and Chess’s story and it’s different from most romance novels in that it focuses on an already established couple who appear to be relationship goals to everyone around them. Despite being together for almost a decade, both men have secrets they’ve kept from each other. These guys are so deeply in love, but they fear their painful secrets will change their relationship. In order to move forward, however, the time has come to face their pasts and expose their deepest pain.
Flashbacks help to tell the story of André and Chess. These guys have been through a lot, but they always put each other first and have an abiding faith in their relationship. This story is sweet and emotional, with a romantic HEA ending.

What happens when secrets start to be revealed, nine years into what is, by all accounts, an incredibly solid, near-perfect, loving relationship? Angst, worry, miscommunication, miss-steps in trust and a whole lot of soul searching.

I really enjoyed this book. So much of what Andre & Chess go through is relatable, even with their circumstances and secrets - the anxiety and loneliness of long separations because of work circumstances, a past that isn't perfect, questions raised by unexpected people and the worry that your partner won't like what they discover when things come to light.

I like that at the absolute heart of their relationship, Andre & Chess truly love each other and want no harm, no heartbreak, no other to negatively impact the other. They only want the best for their lover, they only want to feel that deep connection they have always have, and they only want a future with the other in it.

This is Felice Stevens at her storytelling best. The way she builds this story is perfectly done and as an outsider looking in to the MCs relationship, you can see the quality of their relationship and feel for them as they go through the angst their past brings.

    5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

PS: I'm going to say this: I CANNOT WAIT for Spencer & Wolf's book, it's going to be one doozy of a story!

Footsteps of the Past is the second title in Second Chances series. HEA. Contemporary MM Romance. Second chances. Angsty.

Can be read as a standalone. Series titles have different main couples, but the series is about a circle of friends so the persons from title one will be making appearances is consequent stories.

2POV. 3rd person, past tense. 205 pages. This Kindle edition July 21st 2021.

It was an emotional story, and it was about adults, not youngsters, despite the story containing also the story of their insta-attraction and insta-love story from their younger years, adults now at the present living at the point of their lives where they live with mileage in the meter. Life lived and experienced, hurtful experiences, a past. It wasn't as easy a read as the series starter but it was just as good a one, though different as a reading experience and for a bit different mood. Chess and André's story is maybe in a way a bit more mature, if you want to call it that. Well written, heartfelt. Emotions and suspicions and the conflict as well as the conclusion of it all well described.

Andre and Chess have been dating and living together for 9 years. They thought they knew everything about each other...They were wrong. This book shows that you never know what goes on behind closed doors of a seemingly perfect relationship. Everyone has something they are running from, skeletons in the closet.

Andre and Chess love each other very much and are willing to put in the work to overcome the Footsteps of the Past.

Felice Stevens does not disappoint, this was another not to be missed book.

We have now met two of the four men (Elliott and Chess) and learned more about their pasts. The next book is about Wolf and Spencer. I am really looking forward to this one, and have already pre-ordered Beautiful Mistakes.

MM contemporary romance, easy to read, page-turner with angst. Lots of drama throughout. Chess and Andre have been together for nine years but work has been keeping them apart from each other more and more making it easy for someone to cause trouble. Best read in series order for full understanding and maximum enjoyment, a great read. HEA.

    **possible spoiler alerts**

I hadn't read book 1 in the series but really liked the look of a book about an established couple.
I did really enjoy the book, both Andre & Chess were lovely & obviously deeply in love.
There were parts that were obvious, like how Chess's hstory was going to be relealved but I loved how Andre reacted, he was so lovely.
My only gripe was that for a couple who had been together for 9yrs and were desperatley in love with each other why would they have kept such huge parts of their lives from each other? Why would they have not talked to each other and why would Chess just let Andre get away with that kiss so quickly & easily?
But like I said, saying that, it was a lovely book about a lovely couple.

I'm intruiged with Wolf & Spencer so I will be reading their book when it comes out, they are obviously made for each other!

How many times can you say I love you in a story? Many if you go by this story.
The thing that got me was Andre kissing another man (so cheated on Chess) was written of by saying he was drunk it was not his fault but Dawson killing himself while driving drunk was written of by saying he made his decision, he knew what he was doing!!!!!! REALLY.
Good story about the need to be honest but Andre cheated no matter if he was drunk or not and it was kind of dismissed.
But loved the first book and really looking forward to the next one.
