When Jewel E Ann writes a book, she lulls the reader into a false sense of security because the characters are so funny and entertaining and their emotions are unmistakably intense through all of the swoon and banter. Then there’s the sucker punch - times three, battering the characters and reader. Emmett Riley has the biggest heart on the planet and to be loved by him is a true gift for everyone in his life, particularly Tatum and Lucy. The comic relief is a padded buffer for all of the angst, heartbreak and cry-fest that is yet to come in this story and Jewel Ann delivers it all in spades. Emmett makes a promise to the love of his life and he delivers fully on it even as his life implodes, but like a soldier, he carries on without shame or regret. He takes the hits and he still keeps going, shouldering all of the burdens because his love is an all encompassing umbrella for those who need the shelter from the storm of themselves. My heart hurt for him so bad and there’s a lot of deep baggage to unpack. And since Tatum directed a lot of blame towards him and this book is in his POV, it’s easier to focus a target on her back. However, she’s human and flawed and I might not have liked much about her in the aftermath because Emmett was so transparent, but she was also very real and simply doing what she could to survive. Most people would actually be even more destructive than her and she was functioning as best she could under the heavy cloud of grief and devastation. To be clear, there is no villain in this story. They were both on the same page when it came to parenting and prioritizing Lucy. Still, there was a bit of smug satisfaction for me whenever Emmett pointed out Tatum’s double standards and how Lucy naturally gravitated towards her dad, reminding Tatum that she’s not the only one who isn’t unscathed nor does she have the capital on suffering. It wasn’t until towards the end that as much as Emmett took on the bulk of the responsibility, I finally understood that Tatum was seeking a different kind of strength from him all along. This story unravels several granite-hard, gut-wrenching issues that most people shouldn’t have to face in combination and the fact that the characters weathered through them and came out on the other side can be a testament to how tragedy changes people. It can divide them and it can connect them with an unbreakable bond or both. Forgiveness of others and of oneself is a process and a choice, but is always worth the effort. I couldn’t put this story down and the feels poured in all directions, stomach ulcers non withstanding, affirming the mastery of the author’s writing. Emmett is a true gem of a hero and while he started as a young and carefree guy, he definitely matured into a man who gives his all with both heart and soul. He thinks of himself as a thief because he stole his future wife on a blind date who wasn’t his to claim, but he offers so much more compared to what he takes, stealing a piece of the reader’s heart, too. So yes, book hangover alert.

Oh holy cow did Jewel E. Ann take you on one heck of an emotional ride. This story was one that was heartfelt, heartbreaking, heartwarming, tragic all in one. It was written in both present time and included flashbacks. The flashbacks add this incredible depth to the story that gives you the details for how it all started and what led the characters to where they were presently. Jewel E. Ann knows just the way to weave her words in a way that made you FEEL them. There were moments where I just sat with lumps in my throat and tears in my eyes. The angst was SO real. If I shared all the highlights from him, you’d end up with half if not over half of the book in my review. His heart just bled for the love he had for his wife and his daughter. At times, the intensity was strong enough to tear my heart into two. This man was simply 𝘦𝘹𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘦. His love was unconditional, infinite and irrecoverable and there was not a thing a person could say or do to change that. His loyalty was unwavering. All I could think was, what would it feel like to be loved this hard by someone? For Lucy is a second chance that is poignant and thought provoking but it also takes you on a powerful journey of grief, healing and forgiveness.

RAW. EMOTIONAL. HEARTBREAKING.

But even knowing all of this, I still would recommend the book, just with a warning that it might have some triggers.
Also the book is written entirely in Emmett’s POV, and I loved it, because Emmett is one incredible hero. His love for Tatum was epic, all consuming, and unshakable. He is the best kind of hero to fall in love with. And the way he loved was incredibly beautiful. Emmett loved without a doubt, and without limit. His love was pure. And he is the one who carried this book, who I fell in love with, who I rooted for.
I’m not a big fan of flashbacks, but they were needed to tell this story. Emmett and Tatum fell in love which passion, and head over heels. It was enchanting, charming and picture perfect, until it wasn’t anymore. The fallout broke my heart. And their journey back to each other was an emotional rollercoaster.
FOR LUCY is the perfect book for anyone looking for an emotional and heart wrenching love story. One that will make you believe in LOVE. But also gives you a healthy dose of reality.
