Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Elisabeth writes romantic historical fiction as Elisabeth Hobbes and historical folklore/fantasy romance as Elisabeth J. Hobbes.

She teaches Primary school and unlike her characters, the six year olds generally do what she tells them. She spends most of her spare time reading and is a pro at cooking one-handed while holding a book. She loves to travel and explore, looking for places to inspire her characters into life.

Elisabeth lives in Cheshire because the car broke down there in 1999 (though at heart she's still a Yorkshirewoman). She has two almost grown kids, two cats, two dogs and a husband. The whole family are autistic. She dreams of having a tidy house one day.

I don’t often read historical romance, but this one was recommended to me and I really did enjoy it. It was an easy read and the fact that both MCs were pretending to be someone else made this book unique and fun!

When I first began reading my first romance novels in junior high (much to the disapproval of my parents) I found myself quickly devouring historical-romances and almost immediately I knew that the genre was one that I would always love. My favorite theme of these classic historical-romances was of course of knights. Sadly, this theme seemed to die out as dukes, ballrooms, and carriages began to take center stage of historical-fiction. I cannot begin to write how exhilarated I was to have found, "Beguiled by the Forbidden Knight!" Yes, finally an author was willing to bring back a theme that had long since been forgotten and I was so overwhelmed with excitement that I could not put this book down.

"Beguiled by the Forbidden Knight," was instantly a breath of fresh into an otherwise stale genre of repeating heroes and heroines. To say that I immensely enjoyed this book would be a serious understatement! I so enjoyed this book for capturing the magic of what I found so romantic as a child and used to spend my times in English classrooms daydreaming over. Gui is the rare and true hero of this book. A knight by profession and a gentleman by choice. I was a fan of Gui from the very beginning of the story.

I think it is a fair assumption to say that I also enjoyed the company of Aelfhild although the forbidden secret that she was carrying could have lead to the ultimate betrayal. Like Gui, Aelfhild was strong-willed and determined to see her task through even if it meant her life could have been on the line for doing so. I very much like how Gui understood why Aelfhild had kept her secret so closely guarded.

The romance in this book is not as steamy as some of the other Medieval titles that I have read. Yes, there was a wild, untamed passion between Gui and Aelfhild but it was nothing too hardcore for the more sensitive reader. In fact, the plot is more centered around the fiction rather than the actual romance, but I still loved this book regardless along with the little teases that the author gives along the way.

If you are not already convinced to give this book a try please take my advice and do read this book. The story, the romance is all worth the small effort it takes to read the title. I for one will definitely be rereading this book again and again in the future years. (NOR voluntarily reviewed a reviewer copy.)

A refreshing reading experience. Medievals have gone out of fashion, and it's hard to find good ones anymore, but the HQN Historical line is a good place to start.

This is exactly what it says on the tin: Gui agrees to retrieve his friend (and lord) Gilbert's bride-to-be from the priory where she has sheltered during the conquest in exchange for a parcel of land and a place to build a home. He assumes Gilbert's identity for the journey, because the prioress will be expecting Gilbert to show up and won't hand Lady Emma's valuable daughter off to just anyone.

Before he arrives, he decides to take a dip in a local river, and he runs into Aelfhild there. She's escaped from the priory to visit the sick in the local village, and has decided to fish for her dinner, something to supplement the meager meal she'll receive at the priory. Gui doesn't mean to startle her, but he does, and she lashes out with her fishing hook, leaving him with a nasty scratch. Their encounter is brief and awkward but piques their collective curiosity. Aelfhild returns to the priory before she's missed, and she's shocked when Gui shows up there, looking for his 'bride' - her mistress, Sigrun.

Aelfhild assumes Sigrun's identity because she's curious about the foreigner and because Sigrun is terrified of marrying anyone, much less a hulking man with a disfigured face. They decide to escape, but they don't get far before Gui finds them, and they all decide that rather than return to the priory, they will head back to Yorkshire as originally planned.

Along the way, Aelfhild and Gui fight their mutual attraction valiantly, each under the erroneous belief that the other is out of their reach. They are attacked by a band of vagrants and have to work together to escape with their lives, which tips the balance of their feelings for each other.

The characters' UST is off the charts, and it is good. There are a couple of packed emotional scenes that are absolutely exquisite in their detail, and the final battle was riveting. The road trip was otherwise a bit on the 'meh' side, and considering it only lasted a couple of days, it was a little hard to believe that the main characters' lust for each other had deepened into love (especially since they did not consummate their lustful urgings at any point, though they came close). There were also just a few too many tropes competing for attention on the page: beauty and the beast, double mistaken identity, forbidden fruit, forced proximity, road trip, big misunderstanding...I think if the author had chosen one or two and really honed in on those, it would have deepened the conflict and characterization.

This author can definitely write, and I'm willing to try her other work. Though I respect her for taking the fade-to-black route, it did make the story feel a bit unbalanced, as did the fact that the Big Reveal of Identities didn't happen until the last chapter. It would've been nice to see something at stake on the table, and maybe even a bit of fallout. Instead we have a happy marriage proposal after buckets of angst and self-denial. A bit too pat of an ending, especially given the setting of desolation and destruction.

What a wonderful historical romance with two people who believe they can never be together. The deceitful story each of them has told one another keeps them apart during the journey they must undertake. Caring for each other, yet honor bound not to reveal their secrets, we readers know the truth, but eagerly await when they find out the truth. It was a suspenseful and endearing tale that I couldn’t put down. My only disappointment was that I missed the erotic passion that they felt for each other finally realizing itself in a torrid love scene. Oh well. First book for me by this author and it won’t be my last.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully written medieval romp
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 25, 2019
Historical romance is my guilty pleasure and Elizabeth Hobbs doesn't disappoint.
She sweeps you back to the eleventh century and invites you to meet her feisty heroines.
Following the brutal wars between the French and English, many of the victorious French knights come to claim lands and what goes with them such as the eligible ladies.
This is a tale of two people caught up in this who claim to be other people in order to thwart the process but end up, falling in love. Elisabeth Hobbs always weaves a good story into the romantic elements giving the reader a page turning romp and leaving them wanting more.
    Thoroughly recommended.
