Fractured Souls is the first book from the Fallen Messengers series. It is great opener for the series and also a wonderful introduction to the Ava Marie Salinger's writing. I've seen this title listed in one of the most anticipated titles list and I really did love the blurb I read. It was on my TBR and I am glad to be have been given the chance to read it.

I have read the short story before this one and it did give a small taste of what the world is like and a tiny glimpse on Cassius' character. I really loved Victor from that short story so it was a bit of a disappointment he was not in this book. The overall plot and the other characters introduced here made up for that though.

Fractured Souls started with a bang and the overall plot is engrossing. It is fast-paced and exciting - definitely a page-turner. The mystery is intriguing and the action sequences tightly written. The banter and dialogue between the characters were fun and upbeat. The world and its lore is fascinating that it sucks you in. The different creatures that are familiar were given their own twist by the writer to make them unique in their own right. The other realms teased within felt distinct from each other that I am hoping that those places would be explored more in the future installments.

Cassius Black and Morgan King are pretty interesting characters. Cassius is treated with a mixture of fear and revulsion by most of those who met him all because of a reputation fueled by some horrible stories told about him. The truth is so far from what the stories paint him out to be as he is the one doing all the dirty work of saving the world from disasters that those who held power could not do. Morgan King initially read as a douchebag, however as the story progressed we are introduced to a much softer, fair and caring side. His initial negative reaction to Cassius hinted at a strong past with the other man. Their attraction and chemistry is pretty intense and their relationship was fleshed out quite nicely all throughout even if it did feel like insta-love from the start.

The book itself is a good urban fantasy. It is as a whole enjoyable and easy to read. However, there were some unnecessary sex scenes sprinkled throughout. I love some good sex scenes but in this case some of it didn't exactly move the plot or add anything of import and in a couple of cases actually slowed the pacing of the story. Add in some poor choice of words and turns of phrases during those moments that it ends up the immersion one has.

Still, I'd recommend this book. The minor criticisms mentioned does not really take away the fact that this is a fun, thrilling, well plotted story. I'm giving this 4.5 stars out of 5.

I received an arc copy of this book via GRR and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.

About 500 years ago, a rift opened, expelling angels, demons, and other assorted paranormal creatures who fell to Earth, where they were trapped with no memories of who they were. Among “The Fallen,” as they became known, Cassius is an outcast. He is mistrusted by both angels and demons, who aren't quite sure what he is. Only a few people on Earth have an idea of Cassius' power, and he likes to keep it that way. He recently moved to San Francisco and is trying to keep a low profile so as not to be noticed by any of the agencies that oversee paranormal activities. That plan flies out the window when Cassius agrees to find a little old lady's lost cat, which is really a demon, and stumbles on the scene where a man was killed to steal his soul. Cassius finds himself taken into custody by a team from the Argonaut Agency. The team is led by the angel Morgan, who annoys Cassius, but at the same time, he is irresistibly drawn to him.

“Fractured Souls” is the start of a series centered on a team of the Fallen that fights crime. The overall feel of the story reminded me of American cop dramas that feature a close-knit team that has worked together long enough for them to make jokes at each other's expense, as well as for there to have been some romantic relationships between team members in the past. There are some real laugh-out-loud moments in the book, which helps break the tension in a rather grim plot line.

While the mystery of who is stealing souls, and why, drives the story, at the center of it all is the developing relationship between Cassius and Morgan. The two men both feel a connection, even if they have no memory of having known each other before the fall. The story manages to make the men's feelings very real and relatable.

The team Morgan works with is full of distinctive personalities that we get to know over the course of the story. We will probably get to know them even more in the next installments of this series. There are definitely references to some backstories that should prove interesting.

The mystery provides plenty of impetus to keep you reading to find out what happens next. You might be warned thought that this is one of those stories where a vital clue becomes obvious (to me at least) early on, but it is completely ignored by the characters until very late in the story. It's one of those things that makes you want to yell at the book at times.

Angels and demons, chaos and keepers of the key-Fractured Souls pulses with danger and fast action and then dips into scenes of longing and love-making. Complicated worlds with human magic users and nonhuman wielders of power, that the setting. The story is definitely satisfying and a real page turner!

Good premise: Angels, demons, and others creatures fell to Earth 500 years ago during a war between the Hells and the Heavens. Now they are stuck and without their memories.

Decent plot: An outcast angel is asked to join a supernatural force seeking to solve mysterious human murders.

Room for improvement: Watch out for repeated phrases and words. World building had some inconsistencies. Would angels have completely modern speech and mannerisms? Would someone who’s been around for millennia be embarrassed by sex? And, like other reviewers noted, the reader gets a lot of characters introduced in a short amount of time.

Audiobook: Sometimes the characters proved difficult to differentiate, but the narrator did a good job.

My rec? I’m going to to the second book because I liked the story well enough. Now that I know who is who, I’m hoping to enjoy the second book better.

I really enjoyed this book. It has an excellent arc and teasers for the rest of the series that intrigued me. There is also a stroppy cat which is always a delight. One quibble and I pray the author reads reviews - the word briskly has no place in a sex scene. I don't have the correct equipment and I was wincing. Apart from that, brilliant.
