- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2019In FRAGMENTS OF PERCEPTION, Dudley continues her exploration of the power of the mind through a collection of flash fiction that often comes across as science fantasy, while also crossing genre boundaries to become something entirely its own. "Fragments" may be misleading, however. While these flash fiction pieces sometimes fly right past you, each bit of mind-bending observation works in and of itself, but more importantly, when read together, offers a kind of cohesiveness. In pieces, these stories are a lot like that part of the dream you remember right after waking, but lose only minutes later. Together, they're the whole dream: one of psychological introspection and mystical and spiritual investigation. For reference, these pieces read as if Kafka, Neil Gaiman, and PK Dick had their DNA mixed up during teleport and reformed on the other side as one being, firing off flash fiction as fast as synapses. Little fiery bursts of ideas being shot into reality. Additionally, those that have read Dudley's fantastic MIND IN THE GAP will recognize some tie-ins, such as the society living in the subways or angels and their purposes. Perhaps I'm making connections not there, but that's my PERCEPTION, so to speak. Another great collection from an author gifted with her own very particular perception of the world as it is and can be, from within and without. Highly recommended. Can't wait for what comes next.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2019I enjoy reading short stories, and this book is exactly what I needed to read right now. As the title says, these stories are fragments of perception, and that means that they are short, complex, philosophical and futuristic stories. Reality and dream intertwine, creating a special tone in the book, an interrogative tone of ellipsis and strangeness, but also of melancholy. It's an unusually intelligent book, and no doubt each story was developed like a movie in my head.
If you enjoy reading science fiction, you'd love this book. It is a perfect book to read while you commute or need something interesting to read but you don't have time.
And if I needed to choose my favorite story of this book, it will be "Ellipsis".
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2020I've never read a book of microfictions before this one, and they were a lot of fun. Part of me wanted each story to be longer, but that also tells me how much I liked them. If you're in the mood for a taste of each fragment...a glimpse of each perspective, then these science fiction shorts are right for you!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2017What impresses me most about C.R. Dudley’s Fragments of Perception and Other Stories is how alive and real her imagination becomes on the page. There are no limits to what her narrators experience. Each story invites us to explore fragments of imaginary truth. Her narrators make me wonder what isn’t possible in the imagination. It is rare for me to read an author of fiction who is so respectful of and faithful to psychological reality. Dudley’s narrators seem to remind us that everything we experience, if we are willing to experience it, consists of fragments of perception. Perhaps the most enjoyable part of reading Fragments of Perception is the reading experience itself.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2018I bought this book, because it offered stories in a genre in which I’d never read before. I’m glad I did. C.R. Dudley has compiled several shorts and snippets that really make you think about what you are reading. Some of her concepts are already here, if you think about it, and others aren’t too far away, I’m sure. The Point-Misser was the one that resonated the most with me. Are things really as we perceive them? Or, should we be looking differently. I can’t wait to read her newest release, “Mind in the Gap”.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2017CR Dudley's Fragments of Perception and Other Stories is the work of a brilliant mind. It is a masterpiece of thought provoking stories. Not to be read through in one sitting, but savored, meditated over; each piece giving a macro lens intimacy to characters as eclectic as are their stories. Almost impossible to attach a genre to this collection, I say read it for a wild ride through the labyrinth of psycho-technological worlds it explores.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019Thought provoking short stories steeped in philosophy and mysticism for the reader who thinks and feels with their whole selves. At once deeply personal and widely relatable, Dudley expertly bends reality and consciousness to reveal the heart of it all.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2019A great collection of flash fiction. Clever tales that paint pictures of the mind that your subconscious will understand long before you’ve made concious sense of them. A classic example of describing the indescribable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book of treats!
Aldous Huxley came to mind when I read the word perception in the title of this collection of 36 short stories, described as ‘mind-bending’ in the author’s blurb. Perhaps hinted at by the psychedelic eye which adorns the front cover of C R Dudley’s book. But this is not 1954 and no-one is shocked anymore when spying through keyholes or dumbfounded to see what lies behind the opened doorways. However, curiosity remains.
I then turned to the word fragments. In my tangle of neural pathways, the word conjures associations with the Dead Sea Scrolls. I imagine little pieces of parchment, crumbling to dust when grasped at in the desert heat. Glimpses of something whole, yet impossible to fully behold in the barren wastelands of a desolate and isolated self. OO-er!
Yet the observations contained within C R Dudley’s book are not those of an out of reach, age-old despair. Answers may well disappear in the blown wind, but the impressions left on my emotions were of an enduring pleasure. C R Dudley does not appear to set out to unravel the ancient knots of a universal fabric or frustrate the reader with nonsensical koans in the hope of future illumination. Instead, she playfully explores the psyche, blending her visions with myths and imagined futures
She wears her knowledge lightly and paints her pictures brightly. What emerges from her mind are 36 meditations. Some playful, some dark, but all well crafted and each a gift. A chocolate whorl of hand-picked treats. I found myself enjoying the book in a similar fashion. A couple of stories a night. Each one to be savoured, each one different. Here a surprising hazelnut centre, there an unexpectedly sharp fruitiness. Everyone a delight.
I see there are many nuanced layers to this box of confection and know I will enjoy gorging on it all over again. As the Magician said, if you don’t see it then you are a ‘Point-misser’.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended and an author to watch.
Wowzers. I bloody loved this collection! The stories in it are short, quick bursts of thoughtfulness with a range of tones. They are brain food nuggets, with each story requiring a little thought and consideration. Many of the stories felt like a meditation on mental illness, outsiders, and a desire to hold on to one's original thoughts. I found them extremely relatable. Dudley clearly puts a good amount of time into considering the world around her as the social commentary explored between the lines of these stories is strong.
My only gripe is that some felt a little too short. I am a lover of short stories and flash fiction, but a few of these felt like they needed to be a little longer in order to fully flesh out the themes they focussed on. It's a minor nit-pic though, and not enough to take away from a rare 5 stars from me.
Even though these stories are short, they are dense in their messages, and there is a good number of them which gives a chunky and substantial feeling to the collection. Insightful reflections on the metaphysical presented with a plenty accessible narrative.

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of short stories that will get you thinking
I intended to take my time to savour each story, to analyse each tale but the stories grab you and urge you to read the next tale. Highly recommended
