Vera Culkoff is a practicing Barrister or, according to the American description, a trial lawyer.
She believes:
The power of our thoughts create our belief systems, which in turn create our identities/personalities that shape our lives; and That those thoughts are more-often-than-not hijacked by our illusory fears.
At a recent seminar in Dubai which dealt with these very issues, Vera met medical practitioners, psychotherapists, corporates and entrepreneurs. The doors had clearly opened to many of the “intellectual” sceptics. However, she did not come across another lawyer.
Can a quadriplegic drive a car using only his thoughts and a helmet fitted with technology to capture his brain waves, with a computer in the car programmed to respond to the patterns in his brain created by those thoughts? The answer is yes.
Look up Rodrigo Hubner Mendes. Look up Tan Le, the entrepreneur who is a former Young Australian of the Year and is currently in Silicon Valley. She invented the helmet. Exciting future.
Vera’s passion of sharing all she has learnt so that your potholes and your pain may be lessened during your life’s journey is greater than any “illusory” fear of how this may impact her career as a barrister.

About the author

Vera Culkoff was a migrant of Macedonian heritage, having arrived in Australia from the former Yugoslavia, at the age of seven. She was an incredibly shy child, with a deep-rooted fear of not belonging that led her onto a path of academic excellence. Driven by that survival instinct that many migrants are confronted with, she ended up top of her class throughout high school and college. But she still left school at the age of 16, married at the age of 20 and became a mother at 23 - because that is what was expected of her. That was her cultural conditioning. Vera took up law as a hobby and ended up graduating with First Class Honours and the University Medal. Still driven by that deep-rooted fear of not belonging, she even considered doing a PhD to have “Dr” in front of her name - surely with this exalted qualification under her belt, she would then belong and be relevant in her new country.
Vera was confronted with a major life challenge at the age of 30 which set her on a path of self-questioning, discovery and growth. She finally woke up to the illusory nature of her fears, and to the conditioned nature of all our fears, which are instilled and inculcated in all of us by our cultures, our schooling, our parents, our friends and our very societies. She discovered that it is those conditioned fears that evolve into our belief systems and identities that prevent us from fulfilling our dreams. She discovered that what is conditioned in us can be unconditioned.
Vera shares her life’s journey and the discoveries made along the way so that her readers can awaken to this reality and manifest their dreams – without having to undertake the decades of growth that she experienced.
Vera is now in her 60s and lives in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Australia. She is a mother, daughter, sister, friend, practising barrister...and hopefully an inspirational writer! Her life’s journey opened the door to many new learnings and insights, over several decades. During her search, she travelled many roads, with many potholes that caused much pain.
She is passionate about sharing her life’s lessons so that your potholes and your pain may be lessened; so that you can realize your dreams in a much shorter timeframe and with far less pain; so that you become aware of the many illusory fears that are preventing you from experiencing your true freedom and living your dreams.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2020Freedom from fear is both inspirational and beneficial in anyone's life journey in maintaining a positive state of mind. The book also giving you the tools to create a new vision for yourself. I found the book Uplifting, written well with humour, humanity and wisdom which makes it all more relatable.
There are some exercises to undertake, a pause and contemplate at the end of each chapter, and the 22x11 exercise starts today for me! I highly recommend Freedom From Fear
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2021This book is such an inspiration between being all you can be and having no fear. I do want to re-read at a later time to practice the exercises at the end of the book. The only suggestion I would personally make is to stick to the Biblical references and ditch the Buddhist ones. Easy, fast read, very interesting!

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiration to all women
I have been privileged to read Freedom From Fear. Vera’s courage to write the book from her personal experiences, in a conservative legal profession, was inspiring. She writes with blunt honesty and openness and takes the reader on a journey of their own to explore their own illusory fears. We all fight our own
demons. I learned what is a significant and frightening fear for one person, could look ridiculous to another. I chuckled at Vera’s fears around her body image. This is an area that plagues us as women to this day, except now we want bigger breasts, bigger lips, bigger buts. Vera’s adventures in climbing to Base Camp Mt Everest and then Mt Kilimanjaro with her daughter left me speechless. A powerful reminder of the power of the mind to conquer our illusory fears and take us to a truly beautiful freedom. Her achievements as a lawyer and female barrister were also conquests of even greater mountains. An inspiration to all women. Telling her story of how she entered an almost entirely ‘men’s club’ of male barristers, will (I hope) inspire younger women to overcome their fears and progress professionally to whatever they want to be in their field. The book is written with humour, despite its very serious lessons around overcoming our fears. It was a truly liberating read. Thank you Vera for enlightening me with respect to my own fears! And showing me ways to conquer them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fear is an evolutionary warning to protect us from danger.
In the modern world fear can hold us back, diminish us, and be used by others to control our and societies actions.
Vera takes us on a journey of discovery and conquest of the fears that can blight our lives.
After a partially autobiographical discussion of fear this book contains a series of exercises and suggestions that allow the reader to emerge a more resilient, better grounded, less fearful human. Read this book and be strong.
