His ground-breaking work, Generation to Generation, exposed the emotional connections between home and work in religious, educational, therapeutic, and business systems, and has become a modern classic. A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix, is an acclaimed work on leadership. Friedman died in 1996.

    More than anything else, in our time we need strong leaders, Friedman says, as the result of a lifetime of counseling all manner of individuals and institutions -- families, churches, business, corporate, governmental, military, medical, you name it -- and coming to a fundamental human similarity in all their problems tracing to leadership and to our failure to understand that what effective leadership and therefore effective leadership training looks like. This book is the crowning achievement of his life.
    By strong leader he does not mean "an autocrat who tells others what to do or orders them around, although any leader who defines himself /herself clearly may be perceived that way by those not taking responsibility for their own emotional being and destiny" and wanting a leader who will provide quick fixes and easy answers when there are none and keep everyone both safe and comfortable -- and who, in tough situations regress emotionally and form herds and mobs (the enemy of truly mature constructively thoughtful and deliberative democracies, as our Founding Fathers knew) and become incapable of seeing and choosing the sort of leaders really needed. That's why, in Jesus' insightful words, Jerusalems becomes places that stone and crucify even those sent by God to declare to the people what the present reality actually is and what's needed to move forward, rather than welcoming them. Friedman explains the human "emotional process" that accounts for this , what kind of leader is called for, and how those in a position to help produce such leaders might do so -- and how all of us can from our position, whatever they are, exercise difference-making leadership, incrementally.

    One of the most important books I’ve read. It is not an abnormally long book, but it did take me an abnormally long time to read it. It can be slow going to get through, both because the concepts are so dense, also because it’s not a perfectly written book (published after the authors death and it squirrels around at times imho). Overall, I’ve never read anything quite like it, and it falls in the top five most important books I’ve read. It is written for leadership, but really has reframing implications for life and relationships in general. Last note, as a Christian pastor I recognize this book is written by a Jewish Rabbi (so there are some things I needed to translate for myself) and I felt adding a layer of Jesus' compassion helped the ideas synthesize into my context. Took a little extra work, but the work was very much worth it.

As with all great books, it sets out to make a specific point, in this case, about leadership, but the ideas and lessons are applicable for understanding life and the human condition. I loved it, and will return to this book regularly for many years to come. It is foundational. It’s dense, hard to read, but well worth a slow and studied approach.

    This is not a perfect book, nor completely scholarly, and not a business book. With that said, it comes closer to perfection on the subject of leadership than most and Mr Friedman has clearly honed his skill of observing interaction in systems over many years. The applications to life (including business) are numerous, yet this book is not a self-help in the traditional sense, as it will challenge you to think differently about what leadership is and looks like.

    I would encourage any serious practitioner of leadership to take a deep gulp of this work and find if it meets the test of being true.

    The multiple disciplines that Friedman pulls from have given him insight into leadership that is revolutionary. It is not a simple easy read but with a title like A Failure of Nerve: leadership in the age of the quick fix, you shouldn’t expect it to be. A major take away is that leaders who always try to build consensus are not leading as well as they could be because the anxiety in our culture pulls people towards safety and security and leaders often need to get people to move out of safety into something risky but better in the long run. Lots more great stuff here but be prepared to stop and think often and have to process what you just read.
