Friendly Fire (Never Just Friends Book 4) Kindle Edition
Rafe
It started in high school.
We grew apart. Bit by bit, then all at once.
The friend who was my ride or die suddenly wanted nothing to do with me.
Now Cam’s back from college, living in the house next door, and pulling stupid pranks just to annoy me.
Between my intense family and my failing relationship, I’m struggling enough without his antics.
But Cam won’t go away. And I’m not so sure I want him to.
Cam
It started with a smile.
A touch.
A shared look of mischief.
Rafael Ortega stole my heart before I realized it was mine to give away.
We were best friends from the time we were in diapers right up until the unthinkable happened: he started dating.
I put distance between us to save myself, but now I’m back, willing to do anything for his attention again.
Because the only thing worse than Rafe breaking my heart …
Is him not getting a chance to.
Friendly Fire is the final book in the Never Just Friends series. It’s a low angst childhood-best-friends-to-lovers romance with skinny dipping, sex toys, and one final happily ever after.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2021Friendly Fire by Saxon James is a sweet and fun friends to lovers romance with quality ace representation and acceptance. Low on the drama and high on the romance and the cheesy puns.
I loved both Rafe and Cam. I loved the way Cam never pushed him for more. When Rafe explores his ace identity, Cam is nothing but supportive. The emphasis that there's nothing wrong with him not wanting sex, and it doesn't change how much he loves him. Cam is just honored to get any part of Rafe whether only kissing or simply sleeping next to him. His unconditional love for him was just the sweetest. Rafe's struggle with himself broke my heart, and he and Cam share a lot of vulnerable and emotional moments between them that strengthen their bond. Besides the heavy, the book is filled ridiculous pranks by Cam, fun banter, and cheesy puns that will have you chuckling.
The story is told through present day, dual point of view and well placed flash back scenes that let you see their childhood friendship as they pulled apart. I don't always love flashback chapters, but these worked. I loved the way Ace was represented in the book. A lot of times when the character is ace in MM romances, they are always in the mood when it comes to their significant other. Every person on the Ace spectrum is different and Rafe showed that no matter how much you love someone, sometimes you still have no desire to have sex and there's nothing wrong with that. Both Cam and Rafe are both satisfied in their intimate relationship, and that doesn't always result in both of them climaxing. It was just overall a very sex positive novel, and it made me happy.
Friendly Fire is a great friends to lovers romance that includes ace love, acceptance, steamy baths, innocent pranks, friendly competitions, camping and dirty talk. This was a satisfying ending to a series, with n epilogue for this group of friends that will leave a smile on your face.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2024This is a sweet story. Rafe starts out so unhappy. He’s living a life he doesn’t feel right in, but he’s so afraid of not living up to people’s expectations that he’s been muddling through. Until Cam, his childhood bff, returns and starts doing everything he can to get Rafe’s attention. Cam distanced himself from Rafe in high school when Rafe started dating. I was a little unclear if Cam’s attention seeking behavior is done with the hope that they will be friends again or more than friends or if he simply wants attention with no agenda. But it feels a little on the questionable side since Rafe technically has a girlfriend at the time.
It’s painful to watch Rafe struggle to put himself first and reach for a life where he gets to be happy. And I love how things end up with the girlfriend—staying with someone you don’t love isn’t doing them any favors either.
As Rafe discovers his sexuality, that’s where Cam shines. He’s so accepting and supportive—truly Rafe’s perfect partner.
I love the epilogue too and the glimpse of all the guys from the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2025Okay the headline was for me. Seeing Rafe come to terms with his sexuality was so validating to see. To know that there is nothing wrong with you and that you can still have a relationship. I haven’t read many books with an asexual and aromantic main character. It took me time to come to terms with it myself and a lot longer since it’s not really talked about as much. So it was validating and amazing to read a character I can relate to. And seeing Cam be patient with Rafe while he was figuring it out and being supportive. I love seeing them pick up their friendship again and seeing them develop into more. I’m sad this series is over but it was a nice ending to the series. I also loved the cameos of the other couples we’ve met throughout the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2021I loved Rafe and Cam’s story! I’ve been really enjoying this series, and I knew their was a story lurking there with Rafe! I’m glad this series wrapped sharing Rafe and Cam’s story. I’m a big fan of childhood best friends who fall in love. There’s wasn’t an ordinary besties to lovers story though. They grew apart in high school, mostly due to Rafe dating Laura and Cam realizing his crush on Rafe would never be returned. Cue to them all grown up and living as next door neighbors. I loved how Cam would put together crash antics just to get Rafe’s attention! Garden gnomes, cutlery in lawns, just to name a few! Anything to get Rafe’s attention on him and away from his on/off again relationship with Laura. I loved when these two really started to put their past behind them and open up to each other as the people they were now, and not who they were as childhood friends. Cam became such an amazing support system for Rafe as he started to really decide who he was and coming to terms with intimacy and his sexuality. Cam never pressured Rafe as he started to find his footing with his label knowledge and their growing feelings. As a reader, it was interesting to learn more about an ace character and how those feelings about sex and intimacy may look. There was so much connection and chemistry between Rafe and Cam, I loved it. I loved how they navigated their relationship and how they managed the expectations around them. It was great being able to catch up with some other characters we’ve met along the way. I loved their HEA and I’m sad to see this wonderful series come to an end!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute, sweet - a perfect epilogue
What an epilogue, so many emotions for this one too - it was beautiful, another identity search, it really shows how it is different for anybody and how complex it is.
Rafe and Cam have been best friends for many years, but when Cam goes to high school in another town, they started to grow up apart - Rafe even got a girlfriend and he’s still with her. Cam is back after finishing his nursery studies and brought the house next to Rafe, in order to get his attention, he starts to pull stupid pranks - and it’s working 😜
Rafe is lost, his relationship has been falling for many years, it took him time but he knows that it’s finished. While having a good time with Cam, he starts to truly question himself and wants to discover who he truly is. Cam has been in love with Rafe for many years, but didn’t really acknowledge it - he cannot deny his attraction, he wants to help his friend but after spending time with him, his feeling only grow stronger.
Such a sweet story, a perfect ending for this series - it took me some time but I’m glad I finally read it ❤️😍

I’m NB/gray(pan)/demiro, so the fact that Saxon wrote a MMC who is ace/demiro, is just so freaking ***SWOOOOOOONNN!!!***
#RepresentationMatters 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you, Saxon. Thank you so freaking much. This is everything. To see a MC that I relate to so freaking much with regard to my aro/demiro orientation, when it’s something I’ve only recently come to terms with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read
This author is new to me and I jumped into this series with this one. It was a good read that has the others on my TBR list. I enjoyed Rafe and Cam and their story. This was pretty low angst (just enough) with some sweet romance. Good read.
