The book that started it all! USA TODAY bestselling author Rachel Reid's beloved Game Changers series starts here, with a secret-relationship romance set in the world of professional hockey.

New York Admirals captain Scott Hunter takes his pregame rituals very seriously. When a particular smoothie precedes Scott's breaking his on-ice slump, he’s desperate to recreate the magic…and to get to know the sexy, funny guy behind the counter.

Kip Grady knew there was more to Scott’s frequent visits than blended fruit, but he never let himself imagine being invited back to Scott’s penthouse. Or kissed with reckless abandon—and more. What goes on between them is hot, incredible and frequent…but also only on Scott’s terms and always behind his closed apartment doors.

Scott needs Kip in his life, but with playoff season approaching, the spotlight on him is suddenly brighter than ever. He can’t afford to do anything that might derail his career or the public’s image of what a hockey captain should be. Kip is ready to go all in with Scott—but how much longer will he have to remain a secret?

Need more Reid? Don't miss The Shots You Take—a sweet and sexy hockey romance about two ex-best friends with benefits who are about to discover whether you can ever really have a second chance. Available now!

Rachel Reid is the pen name of Rachelle Goguen. She chose it because it is much easier to say, spell and remember than Rachelle Goguen!

Rachel writes cute, romantic smut, mostly about hockey players.

Rachel/Rachelle lives in Nova Scotia, Canada. She has always lived there, and it's looking like she probably always will. She has two boring degrees and two interesting kids.

Her Game Changers male/male hockey romance series is published by Carina Press and is available wherever you buy ebooks or audiobooks!

I started reading Game Changer and never wanted to put it down! It has everything I love in a romance novel and I was immediately sucked into Rachel Reid's writing and storytelling. I was engaged from page one and with a lot packed into the pages, this book feels a lot longer then it actually is. I'm a big sucker for hockey romances and Reid puts just the right amount of hockey in to keep it interesting without overwhelming those, like myself, who don't actually know much about hockey in real life.

The characters are hands down the best part of this book and since I love character driven romances I was in heaven and quickly developing an obsession with both Kip and Scott. As team captain, Scott has a humble and mature presence that inspires his team and makes him a really enjoyable character to read about. He's not terribly experienced because he's avoided dating for fear of being outed. Scott believes he'll never find love because he can't risk it, so while he's rich and famous, there's also a well of loneliness inside him. When Scott meets Kip and realizes that Kip is interested in him, he finds someone he can finally be himself with. While Kip is a fan of Scott and the Admirals he also sees Scott for the man he is off the ice and this allows Scott to trust Kip in ways he's never trusted someone before. While I loved how steady Scott was I also loved how charming and easy going Kip could be. He's more experienced in dating but he's also in a bit of a rut with his career and ambitions. In addition to Scott and Kip, Reid also gives us some great side characters and I particularity liked Scott's fellow teammates, Huff, Bennett, and especially Carter. There support of Scott throughout the book was wonderful and often had me laughing out loud.

With off-the-charts chemistry, things move quickly and while there were quite a lot of sex scenes, most were intense and burn your fingers hot. There's definitely some insta-love between Scott and Kip, I felt that it only enhanced their relationship because they're both so open and honest about what they want. Of course, nothing is ever perfect and Kip begins to realize how isolating dating in private can be, but Scott is afraid what coming out will do to his career and his team. But what Scott fears more than anything is losing Kip so while his motivation for going public is initially fueled by keeping Kip, Scott eventually comes to realize that his sanity depends on finally being himself around everyone. I was so happy to see the full progression of Kip and Scott's relationship from private to public and I'm glad that Reid showed us so much in regards to Scott's coming out. For a debut author, I'm really impressed with Rachel Reid and I will most definitely be reading more by her in the future.

I hesitated a bit over whether or not I should read this book. Even if things turned out happy—which, of course it would, it’s romance—I didn’t know what to expect with regard to the struggles Kip would go through re-closeting himself. And while it did get a little frustrating, after the “I love you”s, when Kip felt he could not vocalize his discomfort and began to spiral a bit, I do love how it was all handled. It always felt realistic and not like the author was pulling the thoughts/feelings of inadequacy from nowhere.
While my sympathies lay heavily with Kip, that does not mean that I didn’t feel for Scott. It was hard, having no family and hiding a large part of himself from the closest relationships he did have (his teammates and best friends). But I did get a bit annoyed when, initially, he did not seem to understand where Kip was coming from, why he might be feeling like the famous hockey player’s dirty little secret since they rarely left the apartment.
I did skim one or two of their sex scenes after awhile. While they were great to read, it also sometimes felt like their relationship was not developing because of it, and I just wanted to know what happened next. I also enjoy how the author handled the difference in both men’s social standings through Scott’s attitude toward money (it was a great birthday gesture though) and Kip’s struggles to feel good enough even at an event with his best friend.
Something that really stood out to me though, unrelated to the romance, was the casual inclusion of not only non-white characters, but also discussions around being a nonwhite hockey player. I definitely think inclusion in white romances have gotten better. But then we break it down into categories, particularly hockey... and it was great to read. Especially when it felt seamlessly fitted into the plot.
Okay, back to the main love story. Overall, I did love Kip and Scott. And the way he ultimately ended up coming out... my heart!!!!!! I will definitely reread that scene. I loved how supportive and encouraging Kip’s friends and family were. Both MCs struggles were relatable, in different ways. The story was also well-written and funny.
I can’t wait to move onto book 2. I might have taken a break from the series, but that sneak-peek has me invested.

First of all, I had never read anything of this author and, read the description, I did not have too many expectations but .... boom! Surprise! This was the novel with the most well-developed data subjects I have ever read. The MCs are well defined, articulated and then there is Scott who deserves a special mention: a gay in the closet that has all the characteristics of the imperfect perfect man. The end of the story is not botched but has an acceptable breath that deserves a sequel.

Game Changer by Rachel Reid is a sweet and steamy MM romance. Kip and Scott's chemistry pulls you in from the start.
I absolutely love Scott and Kip’s meet-cute at the smoothie shop. It’s so sweet how they’re instantly smitten with each other. Later on, Kip’s ‘subtle’ comment about the hockey players looking like sexy lumberjacks with their playoff beards is adorably funny.
This is a fast-burn, the spice kicks in early, and even though they both try to convince themselves it’s casual and won’t last, their chemistry is undeniable from the start.
Scott grapples with his need to stay closeted and Kip brings light into his life. My heart aches for Scott, who’s spent his whole career hiding in the closet, never allowing himself to be in a real relationship, only sneaking in a fling or two during the off-season, far from the spotlight.
There's a little angst with the tension between Kip and Scott during the playoffs, due to their secret relationship, the pressure of the games, and the uncertainty about their future, is so intense, it makes me anxious, even on my third read.
My all-time favourite coming out scene is from this book, no spoilers 😉
Scott and Kip’s story will always have a special place in my heart. I’m a sucker for firsts in a series, and this one doesn’t disappoint.
