Geist (Phantasia Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

The Geist exist to ferry ghosts away from dead bodies and into the gates of the afterlife. At least, that’s what Ash Murphy was told after he died in a fiery car crash and became one.

Ash is forced to leave his old life behind and join the ranks of the mostly invisible, seemingly immortal Geist. And they all seem pretty perky for people who deal with death on a daily basis.

After years of rejection and isolation, Ash finally has a group of friends he's willing to fight for. Of course, not everyone believes that Geist are doing God's work. Ash discovers this when he attracts the ire of The Brotherhood of Eternity, who believe Geist are actually murdering those they reap. And they will stop at nothing to exorcize every Geist on Earth.

Ash will do whatever it takes to defend his new family and take down the Brotherhood…or he'll die (again) trying.

Quick satisfying read. Lots of witty dialogue that had me chuckling, a truly spiteful antagonist, and tense action scenes. Gave me The Whispering Door vibes.

Author Mark Kelly's debut novel is a robust and fun novel, weaving classic tropes with the unique flair that only comes from an extremely talented writer. Without revealing plot details, it's a fun, dark romp from an author who clearly knows and cares about his characters, his narrative structure and his voice shines through through the humor, the excitement and the passion of the novel. It's a very rare thing for a debut novel to come this polished, this reader feels, but Mark Kelly is an author unlike many and I personally cannot wait to see what comes next!

I was hooked from chapter 1! The author has a real talent for writing relatable characters with a killer plot. I haven't enjoyed reading a book for the first time since reading some of the works of Neil Gaiman. The concepts are interesting and well developed, doing an amazing job of establishing the world while giving a really interesting plot for readers to enjoy. I felt all the emotions along with the characters, grief and sadness, excitement and anger, and just the right amount of humor to lift your spirits. I literally laughed out loud more times than I can count. This will be a really fun book to re-read as well, I'm glad I got both the kindle version to keep on my phone as well as the paperback to add to my bookshelf. I can't wait for more of the series!

This is a possibly the first book in a series dealing with a young man taken from earth too early, who now has the task of helping other souls to the beyond. There are some wonderful "turns of phrases" and the development of the individual characters is so well done that I do hope there is a sequel. I have read YA books by Isabel Allende and others to decide if they could be available in homeroom, study hall, etc., when the students have time to read for pleasure. This would be a fine addition for many students.

Fun, witty, dark: These are the first words that come to mind when I think of Mark Kelly’s Geist. I picture Mark Kelly writing with a huge smile on his face, and you feel that energy on the page. Fun, vivid characters that you’d want to hang with if they weren’t …. Well, dead! And that’s what makes this even more entertaining. At first, it feels like a gay grim reaper story, and that’s just the beginning. This story will surprise and delight you! It’s Neil Gaiman meets TJ Klune! I’ll be reading the sequel for sure.

This book is an absolute must-read for any lovers of paranormal or urban fantasy! The characters are loveable, the plot is compelling, and the attention to detail really makes the setting feel... Well, alive. Insert your own plot-relevant jokes here, haha.

Mark Kelly’s debut novel introduces an ensemble cast of well-developed characters. I can’t wait to read about more of their witty antics and hope there is a follow up book coming soon!

This is a fun read! It’s hard to put down past the halfway point. It reminded me of V. E. Schwab’s “A Darker Shade of Magic”.
