Getting Creative: Developing Creative Habits that Work Kindle Edition
Plan. Fail. Repeat
How does anyone have the time and energy to work on their creative projects after coming home from work, catching up on chores, and putting the kids to bed?
Do these people really have more self-discipline and motivation than the rest of us, or is this just a bunch of crap that we tell ourselves to make us feel better?
Are you one of us?
If you are already a wildly successful writer, photographer, or visual artist who has more time than you know what to do with—this book probably isn’t for you.
This book is for the rest of us who are frantically scurrying about our daily lives trying to juggle our kids, work schedule, and family responsibilities while still trying to find a few spare moments each day to do our creative thing.
Creativity isn’t as easy as it looks
Unfortunately, creativity isn’t some type of switch that you can simply turn on and off at random moments throughout the day. Sitting down to write isn’t like throwing in a load of laundry or checking your email, where if you have a few spare minutes, you can still get something accomplished.
In this book, you'll learn how to build real-world creative habits that work for you.
You will also discover...
• Why being motivated and having self-discipline isn’t enough
• What habits can (and can’t) do for you
• Why getting started is often the hardest part
• How to find and use your creative triggers
• Why setting big goals for yourself is often a mistake
• How to successfully manage your creative environment
• The crucial difference between a goal and having a creative practice
• How to hold yourself accountable without beating yourself up

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2023I greatly enjoyed this book. It was an easy and well laid out read. Most of the suggestions were common sense once you read them but this book kind of worked as a checklist for me to develop my habit for my creativity. I appreciate that it was on the short side and to the point.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2015Drew Kimble is pithy, and so is his book. There are no mega systems here on how to turn yourself into a habit cultivating machine. There are no promises of Olympian achievement or of immediate life changing transformations here. It's a pragmatic book on how to cultivate the habits for all creative endeavors, or for just about anything that requires long term practice, skill and mastery.
His guidance is practical, and realistic. His way of writing moves you along easily, and he lays out a methodology that anyone can and should follow. He won't make you feel all glowy and wonderful inside, he does not portend any riches or immediate gratification or mystical transformation into the creative genius you want to be.
His way is a time proven method, and is presented chapter by chapter as meaningful and sound advice. As each page unfolds, you know what you will have to do to develop your most important habits, and he presents it in a way that makes you want to do the work. For me this book was a call to action, and I found myself making notes, and planning adjustments to how I will proceed with my creative works.
This is another must have book for just about anyone on the creative path.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2017I personally like how the book is so readable. I wasn't able to sit and read straight through but the chunks of information to have in small bits as nice. The encouragement throughout from Drew is pretty sweet.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2016It's a really excellent book and I heartily recommend it for anyone who truly wants to achieve something creative. I love Drew's approach and it totally supports any creative habits I have developed as well as my own real life experience as a creative artist, author and illustrator of children's books. - Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2015This book is a handy resource for any artist or writer who is struggling with a 9 to 5 job while pursuing their artistic endeavors. This book is more about endowing yourself with good creative habits than being a magic problem solver book, and the author is upfront about his goal in this book. It's also incredibly supportive in making sure you don't overdo the practices, and not to beat yourself up if you falter, but continue to take small steps towards larger gains while maintaining a flexibility in being able to be creative while also living your life.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2016The author provides a basic premise for establishing creative habits and also provides examples that can spark ideas for creating your own. It was an enjoyable read, although at some points redundant which is the reason for the four stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2017Readable, practical, and doable. This book leaves you feeling as though you can get started rather than overwhelmed by all that you ought to do. I believe it will help me get back to the writing practice that I've neglected so long.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2016Throughout reading this book I've found myself practicing the advice Drew gave, without really thinking about it; with reading the book at least. I keep coming back to it to figure out what more could I apply myself. Now my sketch pile doesn't look so intimidating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!
As a mum with 2 small kids, finding the time to be creative can be a challenge. This book helps with things like triggers, practice vs goals and rewards!
I'm ready for my 10 minutes now, thanks Drew!

I always felt under pressure to "get on with more drawing", this book put time in its place and have discovered that just allowing just as little as 10 minutes has made the creative habit far more manageable. Instead of thinking I must make an hour some time during the day, 10 minutes with a cup of coffee and a pencil motivates far more. Well written and encouraging book for anyone to use creative time at any time. Little and often is key!
