About the author

Bernie coaches businesses to develop meaningful KPIs and present their management information in the clearest possible way to support good decision making.
Frustrated by the random way in which performance measures are often chosen and implemented, Bernie set up Made to Measure KPIs in 2007. The goal was to develop simple, structured and repeatable ways to create KPIs that normal humans could design and use to improve businesses.
Using the experience (and scars) of working with a huge variety of organisations over his consulting career, Bernie has boiled that experience down into simple, sensible and practical advice on performance measurement. His books aim to share that expertise in a down to earth and conversational style.
Bernie lives in Sheffield, UK, with his wife and two children and some underused exercise equipment.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2018Bernie did valuable consulting work to create KPI's for my US-based organizations. I've met him in person in London and while he's down to earth, he is also world class in this field. At $750US/hour, many organizations might find him out of reach for their budgets but this book is a fantastic and inexpensive way to get his extraordinary expertise for less than the cost of a dinner out.
His book "Getting Started with KPI's" is not merely a book for beginners in the KPI process but rather a title that describes how to start and improve the process -- and the instructions will bring refinement to the process even for leaders who have experience in KPI creation. Plus, Bernie has stocked his this encyclopedia-sized book full of example KPI's for nearly every type of organization. It's an amazing value at $40-50US.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2018This is a great reference for anyone who needs to set and track clear goals. It is written clearly and contains many (sometimes humorous examples) that can be applied to any industry. I came from the financial sector, where I managed a very large operational staff. we were all rated on our ability to meet goals, which were set-out at the beginning of each year. From experience, I can say it is often difficult to draft goals that are clearly written, and more importantly clearly tracked and measured. I recently entered the HealthCare sector, which follows the same process when it comes to KPIs. I've place this book into their shared library, to help with goal setting going forward. This book is equally valuable to the small business owners out there. If you are a people manager or an individual contributor, you will find value in this read. Well Done Bernie !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Changing the way we deliver consultancy....
We are a Visual Analytics Consultancy - in the past we've intuitively done KPI identification with customers but this book is giving us a structured approach when initially engaging with organisations. We've used it now with a couple of new customers and we're already writing better scope of works documents and we are using it to help drive conversations and engineer the Analytics, which in turns drives business process and systems change. Our projects are better defined, and easier to deliver outcomes against.
The book and the methodology are superb - our customers are impressed with the approach. Everything is very clearly explained and we've added a key set of tools to our consultants armoury.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best KPI you will ever find
The author provides you with a clear vision of implementing KPI's in your organization.
Starting with definition, the process to define them, common mistakes and a huge list and examples.
The tools mentioned may be a little bit outdated for the actual context, however you can take the main concepts in those cases.
I couldn't find this book anywhere else, and I can't understand why.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and structured approach to write KPIs
It's easy... but that's what I was searching for. The author takes you on a journey to define KPIs step by step - just like the title says. The book truly lives up to expectations and does it in an easy-to-read and engaging way. The author makes it clear that setting KPIs is no rocket science and doesn't need to feel like it. With his structured approach, good and relatable examples, and exercises, he helps you put metrics to your goals (and even define them in case they are still blurry!). He simplifies your work by providing templates and readily available concepts that you can take and customize to your needs. This is exactly the book I needed, and I'm glad I found it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The 'Haynes Manual' for KPIs
It's one thing declaring you need KPIs for your business, it's another implementing them and sustaining their use. Not only has the author has broken down the approach to setting up KPIs into practical steps, he's dedicated almost half the book on best-practice examples to get you going. But for me the best part of this book is the practical advice to help define, build, publish and sustain KPIs. I’ve personally used this method (in the author's previous book – KPI checklists) and it works.
