Smoke & Mirrors: A Gay Historical Romance (Gilded Lily Book 1) Kindle Edition
After his brother was killed on his watch, mob enforcer Frank Valdea knows exactly what it’s like to be haunted. But that doesn’t mean he actually believes in ghosts, no matter how much some blue-eyed, silver-tongued – and incredibly sexy – con artist calling himself the Illusive Kasimir seems to know about his past.
Frank is less than thrilled when his boss, the head of the Brunetti crime family, insists on wasting his money and time with a so-called medium. But after a brutal attack during a séance leaves his boss dead, he finds himself stuck with the disturbingly attractive Kasimir as they’re forced together on the run from unknown assailants.
The last thing Frank needs is another doomed love affair with a man he can’t trust. Especially since he’s been tasked with hunting down whoever ordered the hit on his boss. But now, to salvage the Brunetti family – and his own broken heart – he’ll have to take a chance on Kasimir, and hope the man can exorcise more than just his ghosts.
SMOKE & MIRRORS is a standalone M/M novella with a HEA, set in the glamorous and dangerous world of the 1920s at the height of the Jazz Age, speakeasies, and New York mobs. It contains violence and explicit sexual content between consenting adults.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2019I am voluntarily leaving this review after receiving a free copy. I wanted more. By chapter 5 I was hooked. There was no way I was putting this book down. This is a quick read. The author managed to cram a lot in using only a few pages. While I do appreciate that talent, I wasn't ready to say bon voyage to Kas and Frank.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2019Overall, an enjoyable story and a pleasant way to spend a few hours :) I agree with the other review, in that the book could have been a bit longer to expand on some of the main characters' interactions.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2020This was rushed, especially at the end. I think the scene at the Duchess's house could have used more detail and more build up. It was so abrupt. The characters could have used some more fleshing out, as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2019This short little novella was adorable and I fell in love with Frank's big broody self and the big teddy bear that he was hiding underneath it all. Kas is a great match for him, and I was rooting for them to get together and kick some mobster butt all the way to the end when I whooped out loud at the sweet sweet justice. My only gripe is that it was too short. I wanted to read more!
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2019Reasonably well-written, engaging characters. Liked the period detail. Wished it had been a bit longer so more was fleshed out.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2019I was surprised at how much I liked this. I was apprehensive in the first few chapters, but Frank and Kas won me over quick. This is a fun and fast paced novella that does this niche genre justice. I loved it!
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2019I received this book as part of an ARC review. The book grabbed my attention in the beginning with immediate action. Frank is a mob enforcer whose boss is killed along with the other guests of the séance. Kashmir is the medium (fraud) performing the seance. They are the only survivors and both get sucked into the drama of figuring out what happened and not getting themselves killed doing it. Sparks got between the two men, despite Frank's resistance.
The book was well written but fell short for me, I just didn't feel the connection between the MCs and couldn't get into their story.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2019The storyline was good, the characters were well rounded and I liked the time period that this story was written in which made this book a very enjoyable and entertaining read!
