This book is all about Christmas in the village of Hollydell, Scotland. Maggie lives about an hour out of London. She is having man trouble. Her boyfriend of over 4 years has moved to London for a bigger and better job. Since leaving he has grown away from Maggie and she is feeling like she is losing him. Actually he was never a good boyfriend, she has caught him cheating at least once and it is over but for the owning up to it. Maggie decides to have a Christmas get away to see if he really still loves her.

    She discovers this out of the way ad in a paper for a place that seems perfect. It is in Scotland so it is close enough that she can afford it. There is only one way in and that is by train, a special train that only runs one time a day and only goes to Hollydell. She books a weeks stay for two. He promises to be there but she is doubtful.

    True enough he doesn't show. On the one hand she is depressed, on the other hand she is relieved. This is a tale for believers. She thinks she has met Santa that goes by the name Simon, his son Henry and a cast of other good people. Once you spend Christmas at Hollydell it becomes a yearly thing. There is only happiness and fun and of course love. This is a fun escape from real life to enjoy a make believe story. But one has to wonder, IS IT MAKE BELIEVE or does it really exist. This story can be read and enjoyed by any age. I definitely recommend it as a nice little get a way.

    I found a Christmas story that would truly be good at any time of the year just because it is sweet and contains some “magical” charm—perhaps it was dusted by Christmas elves. The setting is Hollydell, Scotland, a minimally advertised winter resort that can only be reached by an old fashioned coal train. In fact, it is located literally at the end of the line! Renee tries to help out her long time best friend Maggie whose boyfriend of four years, Dirk, has moved to London in an important new job and seems to be distancing himself from Maggie, a lowly shopkeeper. At least that is the way she thinks of herself. Renee thinks that if Maggie invites Dirk to a romantic Christmas, he will show his true colors by either pulling a no show or asking her to marry him.

    The locals and tourists are all amazing people, friendly and welcoming to Maggie introducing her to all the fun Christmasy activities. As Dirk keeps postponing his arrival, Maggie’s new friends insist that she participate in all of the events and foods that make Hollydell the only place they would want to be during the Christmas season. Henry is the very handsome, kind reindeer keeper who takes a special interest in Maggie, but as they grow closer he shares that he doesn’t do “holiday romances.” The area has some beautiful snowfalls despite Scotland not normally experiencing much snow. The setting is magnificent.

    You just have to read this book to see if any romances develop and if they include Dirk. More importantly, you’ll want to find out if Santa makes an appearance.

    I really liked the setting for this story but was a bit disappointed in the book overall. I could envision parts of it as a movie in my head, probably because I've seen so many Christmas romance movies over the years. Being able to "see" the story helps I think but I was annoyed that Maggie was so dense about her boyfriend. She could name all the red flags in their relationship (like him not taking her calls and not caring that they didn't see each other often etc.) but couldn't equate that with a deteriorating relationship and see the writing on the wall. And even finding out what a jerk he really is, and acknowledging to herself that she was relieved he didn't show up wasn't enough for her to accept that things were over. That point got old really fast.
    I enjoyed the townspeople and the quaint village they live in but the story was probably longer than it needed to be. Had the repetitious points been eliminated the length would be better. The story had some interesting characters and plot points but overall was just an okay read for me.

    I couldn't put it down. I lost sleep because of this novel. Maggie sees an ad on the Internet about this cute little village called Hollydell located in Scotland. She planned on going with her long distance boyfriend who has been distant lately. She arrives at Hollydell and meets a reindeer farmer named Henry. When her friend catches him out with another girl, she decides to embrace the town.
    I absolutely loved this story. Maggie is under confident and feeling less than ordinary. Henry is the cute intellectual who owns takes care of reindeer and cats. They are cute and awkward like me so I felt kinship with these characters. I recommend this book.
