Guardian (The Guardian Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
Emma Donohue begs to differ.
When a late night accident claims the love of her life, Emma secludes herself in memories of James. In his sandy brown hair and clear blue eyes. In their innocent first kiss and declarations of love. In their plans for a life together after college. But happy dreams can’t rid her of the guilt she carries. She can’t erase her actions the night he died. She can’t erase her reaction at his funeral. And she can’t erase the hollow void that fills her chest and consumes her heart.
The first time Emma hears James’ voice, she’s astounded. It sounds as if he’s standing right beside her, and she fears her shattered heart is trying to drive her mad. But, as she continues to hear the voice, she finds comfort in it. With the help of her best friend Shel and handsome newcomer Dane, she tries to move forward and start living again.
Until the voice in her head turns out to be more. So much more.
You know what they say.
True love never dies.

About the author

Sara Mack grew up with her nose in books and most notably got caught reading Flowers in the Attic behind her Trapper Keeper in the 8th grade. Twenty-something years ago she married the guy she met at the gas station, and now they have two kids, two pups, and two fish. She writes paranormal, contemporary, and YA romance, and has an unnatural affinity for iced tea, dark chocolate, and true crime docs.

Emma was a 21 year old college student who had it all. Good family, good friends and a perfect boyfriend she had been with for four years but known all her life. When James is killed in a car accident, Emma is left reeling.
But true love never dies. Instead of going to Heaven, James decides to become a Guardian so he can remain with Emma. While he is training with his mentor, Garrett, he is able to appear to Emma and even speak with her. With a lot of concentration, she can even feel his presence.
A summer job at the local golf course brings the handsome and wealthy Dane into Emma’s life. Despite the guilt that eats at her, she and Dane become close. When he makes his feelings for Emma clear, she tells him they can only ever be friends because she will always love James.
Unfortunately, the novel ends with devastating news that could tear James and Emma away from each other… forever. As Emma moves back to college, she and James are forced apart again yet she is also realizing how much she misses Dane. With two men loving her and only one of them alive, where will Emma’s heart lead her?

I have only recently started to read Paranormal romances again and I’m so glad I did. I ugly cried several times while reading this book, lots of tissues were involved. The love Emma and James share is heartbreaking, considering the circumstances, and beautiful all at the same time.
For those who don’t read a lot of paranormal, the concepts in the novel are easy to understand and not overwhelming. It basically boils down to a story of true love and how far you’re willing to go be with the ones you love. I am still emotional as I write this, that is how much I fell in love with all of these characters. Emma is broken but not weak. James does come across as the ‘jealous boyfriend’ but under the circumstances, can you blame him? He loves Emma and is terrified to lose her again. And then there is Dane. I love him too and my heart breaks for him.
I wouldn’t call the ending a total cliffhanger but it definitely leaves you wanting more and wondering where the story will lead. I give this book and overwhelming five stars and can’t wait to see what happens next in our paranormal love triangle!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWow...This book Sat on my TBR way too long! This story is heartfelt and unique. I was crying so much, but it's unlike other sad books. You are thrown into the grief and then grieve with the characters. I actually really enjoyed that part, because it was so relatable and realistic. It end on a cliffhanger, and although I have a couple other books to read already, I just have to dive right into book #2.
It's also very refreshing to read a book that is this romantic and loving and not have sex scenes play pivotal roles in the book. It really spotlights the authors writing abilities to put so much emotion into the scenes and less sexuality.

Emma is dealing with the emotional tragedy of losing the love of her life, her high school sweetheart James. As the story progresses you will take an emotional rollercoaster ride with her. Ms. Mack did a great job of writing the characters that will have you feeling all the sadness, anguish, and even moments of happiness in this story. What takes this story to another level is the paranormal elements. It is so much more than Emma hearing James voice. As this helps her start to heal it opens the story to elements of paranormal that she discovers about Guardians. You will even feel for James as he deals with his death and afterlife. I will be honest and say that I had mixed feelings about Emma hearing James, at times it felt like it was holding her back from healing but that ended up being farther from the truth.
I feel that I am reading a good book when you are invested in the characters and your emotions are constantly changing as you turn pages. You will get that with this book. I can't wait to read the other books.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEmma is in the depths of despair after the death of her high school sweetheart James. Life is unbearable, and she's frankly just going through the motions that will allow her some space from her very worried loved ones. But things start to get strange when she wonders if she is in fact connecting with James. Her thoughts begin to remind her of her dead boyfriend's voice. She knows he died, and she has to wonder if she's finally losing all grip on reality.
This story. Man oh man, did this story bring it. I read Guardian at the insistent recommendation of a good reading buddy who said I just "had to." Sometimes when a series comes so highly recommended, it's easy to be let down a bit or find that it isn't quite as spectacular as all of the praise. Not so with Sara Mack's Guardian trilogy. I think the most stunning thing about this series is that it has the excitement and power of a good Paranormal Romance, but it also uses a mythology that had me as a reader asking pretty deep questions. Namely: If I were Emma, what kind of love would I choose? There are no easy answers in the first book, and I loved the intensity of it. The plot would not have been as moving for me if the characters weren't so solidly believable.
You guys, I started this series three days ago, and finished it today. That's one book for each of those days. I was reading before bed and reading before dawn too. So if you want to obsess over a mythology that is refreshingly unique and characters that leave you both swooning and gutted, get this book. And you'll want to request a friend buy their own copy. Just trust me. You're going to want someone to rant, flail, and message with over this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful start to a promising trilogy!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a brilliant book. I was reading it bit by bit, but today, I got through the final 100+ pages in no time at all. The story of Emma and her love for James, in life and in death was so heartfelt. Then when Emma was dealt with a few complications, you felt her pains and troubles all the way. Sara's style was easy-flowing and quick reading. I am thoroughly looking forward to book 2, and hope that anyone who has this on their to-read list downloads to their kindle or buys a book post haste!
Well done Sara!
Allegiant is due out on October 6th!
