About the authors
James Dixon has been watching wrestling for over 20 years. Inspired by the likes of Davey Boy Smith, Bret Hart, The Ultimate Warrior and The Undertaker, Dixon was drawn to the business like any other fan; for reasons that are difficult to explain.
A hobby quickly became an obsession, and Dixon was determined to get involved in wrestling by utilising the one thing he could do: write about it. In previous books James wrote alongside his “writing partner” Evil Ste. The truth is, the Evil Ste character was merely an extension of Dixon’s own personality, his way of sharing his Jekyll and Hyde opinions on things. The writing choice worked fairly well at first, but the team at History of Wrestling all felt it had perhaps become more gimmicky that was hoped, so Dixon has reverted to just writing as himself.
Well, we say himself. In reality James is a former British professional wrestler, but he has adopted the pseudonym to retain relative anonymity and to distance himself from his past career in the industry. However, that past experience does give him a unique and more inside perspective on things than the others, though he is still a “mark” at heart.
James has limited patience and borderline apathy for anything in wrestling post-2002, and much prefers 80s and 90s grappling. Curious really, because as you will see from his writing, he spends a lot of time complaining about it.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2023I picked this up on Kindle Unlimited because even though I had no knowledge of the authors, I'm a big eighties wrestling and Hart Foundation fan, both as faces and as heels, especially their angle with Dangerous Danny Davis. This book seemed like a great way to lose myself in some wrestling nostalgia.
What you have here is a detailed account of HF matches from their debut in 1985 all the way up until the tag team split, then a few other reunion matches finishing with the Calgary Stampede PPV. I have to give credit for the amount of research and attention to detail here in this great historical account of Bret hart and Jim Neidhart.
Unfortunately the material here is just a little too dry to sustain interest. Every HF match gets a couple of pages of play by play, a few funny comments here and there and a star rating. Anyone who's seen more then a few Hart Foundation matches knows that while they were an excellent team, variety was not their strong suit, so the actual in match descriptions soon get repetitive. On top of that, there's only so many teams they can go against, so after reading the fifth or sixth description of Harts vs Islanders, Harts vs Bulldogs, Harts vs Killer Bees.... I just lost interest and skimmed through to the end. The authors do a good job, but when you're working with limited source material there's only so much you can do. I can't recommend spending money on this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Hard Slog
Over the past year I have purchased and read all the books released by these guys and up to this point I had enjoyed them all.
This the second in the superstar series books that I have read, the first being the excellent Ultimate Warrior guide and sadly this version does not come close to that standard. In fairness to the authors the standard of writing and dedication to the craft remains the same but the topic just doesn’t add up to great reading.
The Hearts where no doubt a thrilling team to watch and one of the best ever but reading about back to back almost identical matches against the same opponents became a slog after a while.
It was not bad and as said before the writing standard was as high as ever it was just lacking in variety and sadly not very fun.
