- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2021Another great book by Louise Guy with great characters and great stories woven together.
TW: suicide with detailed planning
Abi’s husband’s suicide has revealed a whole fraudulent mess that she feels responsible to make right while also losing her job and friends and home and feeling like she is losing her resentful teenage son who blames her and his father for everything wrong in his life. How can she fix this? And what’s going on with her deceased husband’s family member who seems to be stealing her son from her? Are the motives pure and will she and her son ever work things out? And then there’s the fallout that’s even impacting her sister’s marriage when her husband makes her choose him or her sister, Abi.
Lucinda’s abusive husband is in prison but maybe not for long enough, and she escapes with their sweet and funny young son for a new start, ending up in the apartment next to Abi, leaving behind her life and name and the people she loves. With her new name, Hope, in a new place, will they be safe, though, when her husband is having people watch her mom and friend and poking around to find her? What if he gets out soon? Will he find her and her son and follow through with his threats? Just as Lucinda/Hope distrusts certain people, so did I as a reader, always wondering if they were somehow sent by her husband.
Add a warm and wonderful elderly couple, and you’ve got a whole bunch of people to care about and worry about and a whole lot of ways things could go. I stayed up late unable to put this story down.
Such an excellent read, couldn’t put it down and held my breath through most of it.
The audiobook narration was excellent as always with Louise Guy’s books.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2022This book was very well written and kept my interest all the way through, my only complaint is there was way to much talk about suicide, I think the author could have gotten the point across without mentioning suicide as much as she did it was very depressing and I would have enjoyed the story so much more. If you can handle the subject of suicide mentioned so often then I would recommend this book but feel there should be a warning, if I had known I probably wouldn't have purchased this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2022I enjoyed this book. Guy is a good writer and knows how to develop characters. I found them all flawed, good people, struggling with various traumas. It was fun to watch them go through very difficult times and help each other through.
There are no surprises here, except for the often clueless characters, but still I was pleased with the ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2022The first part of the book was very good but towards the end I felt like the emotions left the story and the characters became robotic. From then on it felt more like a narrative of what was happening without any sense that the characters were feeling anything. I would not recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2021This is the first book of hers that I have read. It certainly won’t be my last! She tells a good story with great character development. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2021A very good story about two women that are trying to survive One has a husband that is controlling and another whose husband died and left a financial crisis and they became friends
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2021This was such a lovely book. I enjoyed listening to the audible through kindle unlimited. The story was written so well. It kept me on my toes and even had me tearing up and laughing out loud. At the same time I had no idea where the story was going which was refreshing. Also, the note at the beginning of the book was great!! Great book! Great job!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2022I have to say, I figured out the storyline from the beginning.
(or thereabouts!) But I did want to see it all out. I fell in love with Max right away and felt sorry for Abi right away also. I wish the part with Ryan had a bit more of a bite to it. Maybe keep you on the edge of your seat for awhile. But, all in all, a pretty good book.
Enjoy the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Some dark sub-levels to the story and some good twists and turns (some expected but I think that's more because I am suspicious by nature than a fault in the telling)
Fabulous story telling, as ever by Louise

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read
Another fantastic book from Louise Guy! There were lots of twists and turns and I got all the feels as I was reading. I felt like I was right there beside Lucinda and Abi, every step of the way.
I couldn’t put it down - the very definition of a page turner.
Highly recommended.
