Here to Stay: A Workplace Romance (Dating in Dallas Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 201 ratings

“Hot, heartwarming, and hilarious...This is a knockout.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

Award-winning, highly-acclaimed author Adriana Herrera delivers the sexy, modern enemies-to-lovers romance you’ve been waiting for.

Starting over is more about who you’re with than where you live…

Julia del Mar Ortiz is not having the best year.

She moved to Dallas with her boyfriend, who ended up ditching her and running back to New York after only a few weeks. Left with a massive—by NYC standards, anyway—apartment and a car lease in the scorching Texas heat, Julia is struggling…except that’s not completely true. Running the charitable foundation of one of the most iconic high fashion department stores in the world is serious #lifegoals.

It’s more than enough to make her want to stick it out down South.

The only monkey wrench in Julia’s plans is the blue-eyed, smart-mouthed consultant the store hired to take them public. Fellow New Yorker Rocco Quinn’s first order of business? Putting Julia’s job on the chopping block.

When Julia is tasked with making sure Rocco sees how valuable the programs she runs are, she’s caught between a rock and a very hard set of abs. Because Rocco Quinn is almost impossible to hate—and even harder to resist.

Loved this New Yorkers in Dallas romance
This one was so good. Adriana Herrera is a new author to me and I can see that I have been missing out! The writing was really engaging, the characters were entertaining and the plot was engrossing. I really loved this book because it combined family loyalty with real community issues and a sizzling romance. Definitely one of my top reads of 2020. Julia del Mar moved from New York to Dallas to follow a boyfriend who dumped her soon after she arrived. He also stiffed her with the apartment that needs two people to pay for so Julia cannot afford to lose her job. She works for a charity foundation, an arm of a high fashion company run by two sisters. Rocco Quinn is a New Yorker who was sent to Dallas as a financial consultant to the foundation that Julia worked at. The problem is that the two sisters who run the fashion company are being challenged by a younger brother who wants to streamline the fashion company and maximize profits by phasing out their philanthropic wing, which is where Julia works. Julia tries her best to show Rocco what her department means to both the fashion house and to the community. Julia plans a series of get togethers for the “Gotham Exiles” aka the New Yorkers who now live in Dallas and Rocco joined the group. The sparks between Julia and Rocco was evident but what added to the drama was the fact that Rocco was hired to end Julia’s job. Added to the burgeoning attraction, was Julia’s family. I was laughing so hard because I remember my mom and grandmother worrying about me when I moved from Dallas to New York. Her family is so protective, loving and hilarious. Julia’s family were scene stealers and they made me craving some Dominican food. I also loved the subplot with Rocco’s family and their issues. It helped illuminate Rocco’s values and lets the reader get to know him. I really liked him and Julia as people. They care about other people even to their own detriment. If you want a book where the author really develops the characters and the plot is relatable, then you have to read this book. Definitely one of my top reads of 2020.

Julia Del Mar Ortiz has moved from her home near her family in NYC to Dallas with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend who quickly decides to return to NYC and leave Julia single with an apartment lease. Julia is trying to make the best of the situation. She works at her dream job, helping families at a non-profit that is funded by a high end retail chain. Unfortunately, one of the co-owners of the chain has decided he wants to take the company public, which means cuts will likely be made. Enter Rocco Quinn, a financial consultant who's been tasked with making a recommendation to the board, and to look at where financial cuts can be made. Julia knows he's likely to say her program needs to be cut, since it doesn't bring in any money, so she knows she should stay away, but those blue eyes... When Julia organizes a meet up for local ex-New Yorkers, who shows up? Rocco. How long will they be able to keep their distance? Deny their chemistry? How can Julia start anything with Rocco while her job is in his hands?

Ay papi, este libro! Once I picked up this book I could not put it down. The characters hooked me from the start. Julia is an Afro-Latina with Dominican and Puerto Rican roots. Her passion to make a difference in the lives of others however she can is something I relate to immensely. She feels lost in a new place, and is trying to find who she is without being part of a couple (also relatable). I love that we get a glimpse into her family life and the wonderful dynamic they have. Rocco comes from a very different family, but talks a lot about his family of choice. The Gotham Exiles Club is an amazing crew that I wish I had in my life! I loved the Spanish sprinkled throughout and the pieces of Julia's culture woven throughout. It was just part of the story, just like it's a part of someone's life. And their chemistry... I realized that I want a man in my life who speaks at least some Spanish and feels comfortable in a Spanish speaking environment. There is so much I love about this book I can't fit it all in this space, so I'll just say, go read it!

Don't let that adorable cover fool you, this book is HOT! This is the first book I've read by Adriana Herrera, but it will not be the last.

This book was a workplace romance full of family, friends, and lots of steam! I'm fairly certain it was pitched as hate to love, but I definitely didn't get that at all. Rocco made her nervous because of his job, but I never got hate. I really loved so many aspects of this book, such as the diversity, the friendships (The Gotom Exiles were great), and family (obsessed with Julia's grandma). I enjoyed Julia as a main character. I think she was determined to make her own way, full of sass, but was also a sweetheart. I liked Rocco enough. I loved how much he loved his sister and niece, and wanted to do whatever to take care of them. This book is full of steam and dirty talk, I loved the tension and build up between Julia and Rocco. I feel like they formed a great friendship and once they actually communicated they were great together. I real liked the ending/epilogue. What I didn't love about this book was all the noncommunication. I know it's a thing especially in romance novels, but it's not for me. Like I feel like so much of their issues would be non issues if they just said what they were thinking (like the conflict). I read this ebook and listened to the audiobook, and I really enjoyed the narrator's on the audiobook. I'm assuming the rest of the Exiles will get a book, and I will do read them.

Julia Ortiz had moved from New York City when her now ex-boyfriend got a job but he ran back to NYC leaving her with a large two bedroom apartment and a car loan so she stayed. Julia had gotten her dream job of program director running the charitable foundation run by the high-end Sturm department store.

But there is a major kink in her plans because Sturm’s wants to go public and the foundation may be on the chopping block with fellow New Yorker Rocco Quinn being the top consultant and making the plans and she can’t get him out of her mind.

I live in TX with a lot of PR influence and I laughed constantly at the scenes between Julia and her mother. Now to read the next book coming soon.

I was excited to find a book with an Afro-Latina lead who wasn't all about her ethnic identity and yet made it a central part of it. She was strong, capable and proud and the Spanish interludes felt welcoming, like home. It was disappointing to read through so many inner monologues where the romantic leads sounded like horny teenagers. That felt repetitive and why I have an otherwise entertaining book only three stars.

Julia del Mar Ortiz is a strong, funny, sexy, former New Yorker, now working a job she absolutely loves, AND which is socially important, in Dallas. Fellow New Yorker Rocco Quinn is on assignment - and he knows it - to take that job away from her, before he returns to NY.

This book has so much to love. Julia is from a close-knit Afro-Dominican family, and most of her friends are also in that demographic, but Rocco, although a blue-eyed gringo, is fluent enough in the culture and language that even Julia's abuela (grandmother) likes him. The heat between these two and the sex scenes, wow!

As a gringa myself, the frequent interspersion of Hispanic words and foods wasn't overwhelming to me, and context made most of it clear. I liked it a lot, but I'm still an outsider. I suspect readers who ARE from this culture will really love it. The circles of family and friends are wonderful, if not without some painful family dysfunction, as well. She's drawn so many great, distinct characters, all the way down to Pulga, the kitten. Great, fun read.

Eine wunderschöne gut geschriebene Geschichte über Familie und gefundene Familie und über die Werte, die am Ende des Tages so viel mehr sind als das reine Ergebnis am Ende einer Kosten-Nutzen-Rechnung.

I'm a big fan of this authors work. This was full of a lot of things but mostly heart. It was slow burn, kinda forbidden and a great case of a found family. Two NYC transplants finding each other even despite working on opposite sides of a job. The friendship group was so much fun and even though this was kinda low angst, I was rooting for Rocco and Julia all the way.
