Heydrich: Henchman of Death (Hitler's Henchmen) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 127 ratings

A gripping biography chronicles the life of the man behind one of history’s most horrifying events: the Holocaust.

Perfect for readers of the works of Ian Kershaw, William L. Shirer, and Richard J. Evans.

Reinhard Heydrich, a man Hitler famously dubbed ‘the man with the iron heart,’ played a pivotal role both before and during World War Two. He founded the
Sicherheitsdienst (SD), an intelligence organization that sowed terror among Nazism's enemies through arrests, deportations, and murders. He aided with the implementation of Kristallnacht, a precursor to later atrocities, that targeted Jews throughout Nazi Germany. By the time the war began he was Director of Reich Security Main Office meaning that he was in charge of the Gestapo, Kripo, and SD, and it was from this position that he chaired the 1942 Wannsee Conference which planned the ‘Final Solution to the Jewish Question’ — the deportation and genocide of all Jews living in Nazi-occupied Europe.

His reign of terror came to an end when he was assassinated in mysterious circumstances while fulfilling his duties brutally eliminating opposition to Nazi control in Bohemia and Moravia in May 1942. But who assassinated this man with many enemies?

Charles Whiting utilises a variety of sources, including interviews with Heydrich’s widow, to examine the various theories about who was behind the plot to murder one of the darkest figures of the Nazi regime.

Whiting also explores the legacy of this man, demonstrating how Heydrich not only ruled institutions that still exist like Interpol, but also how he laid the foundations of an economic system in central Europe which is partially still present to this day.

Heydrich should be essential reading for all eager in learning more about one of Hitler’s most ruthless henchmen.

I have read any number of books, articles and periodicals on Heydrich but this book presented in an enlightening manner. The financial and banking aspect provided some new info, including the IBS (read if you know little or nothing of this banking entity). Worthwhile book to add to your WW2, Heydrich, SS collection.

Knew some about this event before reading this book. Brought out several facts and links to today that I had not been aware of. Well worth the time.

There are not many biographies of Heydrich, and Günther Deschner's would be by far the best one. This book is an ok read, but the chronology is somewhat difficult to follow, there is indeed much more discussion of others than of Heydrich and the book could have stood for better editing. For those specifically interested in Heydrich, this book would be an ok read, otherwise, Deschner's bio is more comprehensive.

I happened to read this truly dreadful book shortly after finishing Walter Schellenberg's biography on his career as the Nazi counterintelligence chief and was immediately struck by quite how much of the Schellenberg material Whiting used. There is no bibliography in this work, which means the reader has little chance of discovering where else Whiting did his digging and what is unique and what is not. This is not so much a book about Heydrich as a highly disjointed and padded second-hand account of all the things Heydrich might (or might not) have been involved in, seen through the eyes of others. Never once do we get inside the man's soul and Whiting's alleged main triumph -- his interview with Heydrich's widow many years after the war -- falls totally flat, since she didn't really tell him anything very interesting. Whiting also hammers away at his rather odd and underdeveloped pet theory that Heydrich's efforts to pull all of Europe's industry under German control successfully paved the way for the fledgling European Community (later the European Union) which was created after the war. If you want to know anything serious about Heydrich and the way he worked, read Schellenberg's book, not this one. What really does surprise me is how few serious books are readily available on Heydrich, who after all was one of the most interesting and intriguing of Hitler's lieutenants, the man who played a key role in finalising the plans for the Final Solution and amassed extraordinary power before his assassination.

Whiting is a pretty well known writer who has churned out a number of bios on WWII people. However, his bio of Heydrich falls short mainly because he spends too much of the book writing about other people. He spends numerous pages describing the people who planned and exectued the assassination of Heydrich rather than discussing Heydrich. Too much of his work seems to be conjecture and speculation also. While Heydrich is one of the most hated and fascinating people of WWII and the Nazi party, this book is not the best to learn about him. Unfortunately, there are few bios on this important person. One interesting thing about this book is Whiting's contention that the economic system set up by Heydrich in the 1930s and early 40s is the same one being used today by the European Union. Other than that, not too good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely well-written - Reinhard Heydrich

History lesson WW2. So interesting looking into these infamous people’s lives. Adolph Hitler's henchmen.
An explanation of how and why the Nazi leaders connected to each other and each level of their hierarchy. An Introduction to the individual people responsible for the initial formation, system and structure leading to the Development of the horrific Holocaust. Himmler, Heydrch, Boreman, Goebals and many more.

The planning and the disasters and loss of life of the Czech assassin's plot of the tyrant Heydrich. The horrific outcome and of the repercussions administered to the brave local people.
I trembled with fear reading this book. The absolute evil of the Gestapo. But, I do understand so much more now about why and how Hitler's war progressed as it did.

    Excellent read. Very informative.

This is an awesome historical book , shocking for most of the book , if you like me google some of the minor characters you find out they were people who murdered other people without hesitation or regret , were the german people complicit in the mass murder of all these inocent people , my late father who fought in the british army from 1939 to 1945 thought so , i cannot tell you what my dad said should have happened to the german people after the war !!
