High Heat: A Firefighter Romance (Hotshots, 2) Mass Market Paperback – July 28, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
Annabeth Albert’s Hotshots series continues—the emotions and intensity of Chicago Fire with the raw, natural elements of Man vs. Wild.
Smoke jumping is Garrick Nelson’s life. Nothing, not severe injuries nor the brutal physical therapy that follows, is going to stop him from getting back with his crew. But when a lost dog shows up on his front porch, he can’t turn her away, and he can’t take care of her on his own. Thankfully, help comes in the form of his new sexy, dog-loving neighbor. As they work together, trying to re-home their little princess, Garrick can’t resist his growing attraction for the other man, even though he knows this guy isn’t the staying type.
Rain Fisher doesn’t take anything too seriously. He dances through life, one adventure at a time, never settling in one place for too long. When his hot, conveniently buff, neighbor shows up on his doorstep, dog in tow, Rain’s determined to not just save the adorable puppy, but her reluctant owner as well. He never expects their flirtation might tempt him into stay put once and for all...
Danger lurks everywhere for Central Oregon’s fire crews, but the biggest risk of all might be losing their hearts.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2020High Heat was so good and I loved every second of it. I knew almost from the beginning that I would love this one and it just kept getting better for me. Unlike the first book, we don't see much of the smoke jumping experience because this one is all about Garrick's recovery after an accident left him with two broken legs, spinal cord damage, and nerve damage. He's been pushing hard to improve and eventually walk again but it's been over a year and he's still dependent on crutches or a wheelchair to be fully mobile. High Heat deals with a lot of hurt/comfort themes but overall has a more upbeat and happy tone. Garrick is not one to wallow in his injuries or his troubles; he's a go-getter with big dreams and a whole lot of determination.
When Garrick meets Rain he's hesitant to give into his attraction because Rain is his neighbor's grandson and about 10 years younger. But these two quickly move past the age gap and right into a very flirty and light friendship that changes to something more after a very sexy hot tub scene. Holy cow! Rain grew up in a commune and is used to being busy and needed so when Garrick finds himself fostering an energetic lost dog, Rain is happy to jump in and help. I loved Rain and how confident he is in his own skin; he owns everything about himself, the good and the bad, and even though he's younger he's used to taking care of himself. He's also a bit of a free spirit and his temporary stay in Painter's Ridge becomes a source of worry and angst for Garrick who already lost a fianceé to the big city.
Garrick and Rain were everything in this book and I loved their relationship and how easily they fall into caring for and helping each other. They go into their relationship knowing it has an end date but that doesn't stop them from enjoying their time together. Both guys are affectionate and confident and enjoy a good time. I also liked the way Albert explored Garrick's struggles with sexual function after his injuries and how she normalizes healthy communication and exploration for a couple. Rain's understanding and support goes a long way to making Garrick comfortable with sex again, even when things don't work out the way he was expecting them to. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2020There are many elements I really liked in this one, including the issues Garrick was dealing with due to his accident while on the job as a Smoke Jumper. Rain was a breath of fresh air, to him, but also to me, as a reader. He's such a sweet considerate guy, none judgmental and honest in the best kind of way. He saw in Garrick so much more than the physical state he was in. So much more than he let the world around him see.
Near the end of the first installment Garrick Nelson finds himself hospitalized with severe injuries to his head, legs and spinal cord. The prognosis isn't very promising but he is a fighter, always has been and he is going to work HARD and get back to work, jumping off planes, even if it takes time to get there. A year later he has made a lot of progress and though he is frustrated at times he doesn't let himself dwell on those feeling - he fights on. His life is a lot more isolated than it used to be. He was a social guy, going out, hooking up, meeting with friends, but now everything is different. His friends offer him help and he doesn't know how to react - if they are serious or not (or just being polite..) - and also there are the looks, the questions he doesn't know how to answer, the memories and the knowledge he is "missing out" while his friends are doing the thing he loves most and cannot do now.
When he finds a stray dog at his porch he goes to Shirly, his friend and neighbor from across the street, to ask for help dealing with it (considering she's afraid of both crutches and his wheel chair). He doesn't expect to get Rain Fisher instead. Rain is staying with his grandmother for the summer, helping her out while she is dealing with arthritis (though she barely allows him to do anything..) when he sees Garrick (and the stray dog) he jumps to help - as it's what he does best - being there for others.
Rain tries to persuade Garrick to adopt Cookie (that's how they decide to call her) but Garrick is reluctant as he can't even take her out on his own. Rain, naturally, offers to come and take her out. It's the best solution so Garrick accepts - at least until a permanent home is found for her. Rain is only here for the summer and he can't commit to a dog now especially as his isn't totally independent.
With Rain coming to take Cookie out they get to know each other and slowly but surely become friends. Garrick learns Rain is also interested in fire fighting so he offers to train him. Getting up early in the morning to walk Cookie and exercise is no hardship for Rain when the company is more than worth it. He is getting better and stronger and even finds a summer job (with Garrick's help). Garrick himself finds a "desk job" in the center he used to work as a smoke jumper and though it's not what he would like to do, he's good at it, and it's something to pass the time (it also helps he gets to see and hear Rain).
While Garrick feels insecure in his ability to have anything other than platonic relationship with Rain, Rain makes it clear he would LOVE to have anything and everything with Garrick. Whatever he is able to, what they both enjoy. There was quite the emphasis on sexual interaction in this book and while I appreciated it, because it was dealing with Garrick's physical and mental state resulting his spinal cord injury, at times it felt a bit much. They had many interactions as friends - which was great! But something was still missing or maybe there was too much time "in their head" dealing with the same insecurities especially concerning if they can hope for more from each other.
So while I enjoyed the interaction between the guys, enjoyed seeing that while Rain helped Garrick whenever and however he can, Garrick took care of Rain in his own way - the exact way Rain needed and didn't even know he needed or was able to ask. They took the time exploring the friendship they have found in each other which was truly endearing and yet I didn't find this book as captivating as I wished it would be.
It's a rounded up 4 stars rating for me as I was getting frustrated with the pace and redundant inner dialogue. But I still recommend this book, I think it was different, it was tender and sweet, yet it was kinky and fun. I really appreciate Annabeth for bringing to the table such a difficult issue as spinal cord injury, the realness of the situation for Garrick, what he had to deal with, what he needed to do and what he needed to accept. It wasn't all pink and bubbly - far from it. It was realistic and at times harsh. In a word it was REALISTIC and the romance aspect was exactly what this realness needed.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2021This is an outstanding book surrounding Garrick. His life and his recovery from his accident in Book #1. This book can be read as a standalone but these are fantastic books. When Garrick meets Rain he has no idea what an impact he is about to make in his life. Rain sees him as a HOT neighbor. Garrick feels like an old man who is washed up. Rain shows all that he is up for the challenge and wiser than most his age. It's about two men with tons of insecurities but lots of unfulfilled dreams. I loved getting to know Garrick. He was a complex and interesting character. Cookie was a magnificent bonus. I love animals in books, especially when they show how important they are to the story as a whole. I enjoyed this book so much. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2020I’m disappointed. I was hoping for something more original from her, rather than knowing the whole story in the first 5 minutes.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2021I was really looking forward to reading Garrick's story after his accident in the first, and I was so not disappointed. This book was fantastic! Everything about the relationship and dynamics between Rain and Garrick was perfect, even when real life intruded and things got messy. Their relationship is built on a solid foundation of friendship and mutual respect, and the desire to make the other happy. It's a beauitful, fun, steamy love story. I loved both men and their big hearts, but I adored Rain. His love and zest for life was infectious! and his self respect and confidence a breath of fresh air. Kudos to the author for writing what felt like a well-researched story with an attention to the many details.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2020I'm glad Garrick got his book but I'm growing weary of the age gap trope and this was yet another one. Hoping things switch up next time around!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I came into this book expecting much of the same smokejumper focus as the first book. I was surprised not to find it - instead finding such a beautiful story of Garrick and Rain helping one another learn and grow as the world around them throws challenges out.
The age difference wasn’t vast, but enough for Rain to be able to tease Garrick about. I loved the friendly banter between the two of them. The author also clearly did a lot of research to be able to portray the extent of Garricks injuries and his recovery which made the book feel even more real. It also helped to solidify the sex scenes with a tenderness that many authors can’t achieve. Broaching sensitive subjects with ease, every page of this book was a pleasure to read.
As always, as a reader you wish you could bash Garrick and Rains heads together and make them see sense sooner. But this was such a sweet friends to lovers tale, with the addition of Garricks family as they accept and welcome Rain.
This was stark contrast to Book 1’s gritty forbidden love, but a wonderful addition to the series. Now all I need is a plane ticket to Central Oregon to find a town like this, because it sounds beautiful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Read
I enjoyed this book very much and liked the story line hope the next one in the series is just as good

4.0 out of 5 stars ***3.5-4 STARS***
“You’re my future. The future I never knew I needed this damn much, but I do. I love you for making this happen for me, but I love you for giving me my future even more. You give me hope, hope that the best parts of my life are still to come. And I can’t thank you enough for that.”
In book one Garrick was badly injured leaving him in a wheelchair & using crutches. In this book we see him navigating his new reality. We also meet Rain, Garrick's neighbour's grandson who is supposed to be leaving again in a couple of weeks and a lost dog that brings them together.
Garrick isn't completely closed off but understandably has pulled back and is struggling in some ways with how quick his life has changed. Rain is completely open and vulnerable and unashamed of who he is and will not apologise for who he is. There is a great balance between Rain and Garrick and how Rain's openness pulls Garrick in and also brings him back to his own carefree ways, not completely, because Garrick has to get there himself but there's a trust between the two. Plus, Cookie the dog who was absolutely delightful and completed this trio.
From the beginning I was enjoying this book, There was a much more fun and less tense atmosphere than I felt was present in book one. I did wish at times there was more of Rain and Garrick living their lives outside of each other but I have to say, I was also enjoying their bubble and how they were getting to know each other and in turn getting to know themselves in different ways. Garrick was figuring out who he is now and what his life will look like in different ways. With Rain it was him figuring out what he wants to do away from his family who judged him for not having it all figured out.
There are great moments, sweet and sexy ones, figuring things out moments, vulnerable moments, funny moments, moments of communication and clarity.
I loved so much of this book but it did, for me, lose steam in the middle, got slow and stagnant.
Also, something that Annabeth Albert seems to have as a running theme at least in this series so far is imperfect family dynamics which is fine but it seems while trying to balance that people aren't perfect and acceptance doesn't come in celebration and rainbows etc. What seems to happen is acceptance seems to feel like tolerance and instead of feeling balanced out it seems to go to the other side without going to complete ignorance.
I did enjoy this a lot though and I loved Rain and Garrick together and the exploration of new things and a new life together and I was really glad that there wasn't a "miracle" recovery which I was a bit afraid was going to happen. As it has happened in books before where disability is used as a momentary plot device. So glad it didn't happen here.
